Celtic vs Liverpool - Pre match thread

Might sound a bit stupid but I think we needed the loss today. We've been gifted wins all pre season.
Celtic made us work today but I wouldn't say that they deserved the win.

that was the first game that resembled a game in the premierleague so far.

I'd rather lose to Celtic and be more aggressive in the transfer market, than win and go into the season content with a squad that still needs a couple more pieces.

Hopefully Rodgers uses this result as motivation to get some fresh faces in the coming weeks.

This. If anything, this lost is a good reminder that we're still a couple of players short.

Even though we lost, we did create a fair few chances which we didn't convert which is typical.....

Yeah, that was my initial thought aswell.
Tbh I think we've made a bit of a mistake with some of the sides we've played this pre season and the quality of them.

We didnt look sharp at all today, which is understandable seeing as Gerrard has called it a nightmare in terms of training, and Celtic have played 3 competitive games already.
You could see the difference in terms of fitness.

so glad with this loss today, as pointed out by others...now hopefully Brendon knows DOs n DONTs against stoke...because we must start the season with a win

Don't worry about Stoke. They won't score, I'm sure of it. I just hope that we do.

It's good that we were bad in this game. At least it stops us from being complacent after all the other friendlies.

Sturridge and Coutinho are obviously on the same wavelength, which is good to see.

Enrique and Henderson seemed to be comfortable supporting one another down the left as well. I'm not too sure if Henderson's best position is there but he looked pretty dependable. Which is good.

Not convinced that we should sell Downing unless someone else steps up.

Ibe tries to do too much but that's probably due to inexperience.

This guy slept from before kick off, all the way through to the 88th minute

Huh - I quite enjoyed the game. It was great to see Coutinho play with his usual mintness. Sturridge looked good (a bit of expected rustiness aside) and linked up really well with Coutinho. Toure was also very good. Nice to have another threat from set pieces. I'm not bothered at all we lost - It was a good work out and in a friendly. Next week when Agger replaces Wisdom (who was to fault for their goal) Sturridge in from the start. I'm all over that!

Oh and I stand by my BT sport is a bit shit but like some mentioned - Owen made a surprisingly good commentator.

Apart from Downing, Johnson and Enrique (who all should be replaced imo) We played well.

How did we play guys, took mrs shadey out so missed the game.. Cheers

I'd say that we actually controlled the game and had most of the possession. Celtic hit us on the counter a few times and held the ball surprisingly well.
We lacked quality in the final third though and missed tons of half chances and one or two clear cut ones.
Coutinho and Touré were our best players. Sturridge did well in the 2nd half but needs a few games under his belt.

My view of the game :

I hope it is the case that they didn't really try because the season is a week away.

The positives- if Kolo can keep passing clean urine he looks like he might be decent for us. He's still mobile and has a decent leap on him.

Wisdom looks okay. Still a way to go for him though.

Coutinho and Sturridge link up incredibly well. They'll be a threat all season long. And Coutinho really puts in a shift with and without the ball, he presses really well and covers every blade of grass.

Unfortunately not a lot else was positive. Aspas looks very ordinary, he lacks any pace, his movement was iffy and he provided nothing to us.

The midfield is poor. Lucas does his usual, stupid fouls sideways passes. He runs around a lot but he's so dumb it fucking hurts. He has so little awareness it's frightening. The prime example was a nothing two on two attack down their left, Johnson has the winger covered, Lucas just needs to hold his position and the winger had nobody to pass to. Instead he does his Labrador routine and simply follows the ball allowing the winger an easy pass and a the receiver an uncontested shot. We weren't punished, but against a decent side we would be.

Allen hardly featured. I'm not sure why he's playing AM. He doesn't have any of the skills you'd want in a player playing that role. Not surprisingly when Coutinho moved in, we were better.

Gerrard is a shadow of himself.

Downing is downing.

It's going to be a long season unless we do something drastic in the next couple of weeks.

He might be our only threat from set pieces 😉
