Was fantastic today, really good. I think hes been mentioned a few times before on here, but if Wigan go down, and even if they don't, I wouldn't mind if we went for him! Great talent!

Does he always play like that? He was a bit good today. His determination was really something to admire.

Aye, when he's not trying to break someone's legs or supporting Everton, he's great.

Perfect for a 1st Moyes signing at the Scum.

He was unplayable today however he's only been playing since xmas and has taken a bit of time to get going.

He's full of confidence at the moment but not so sure he's cut it at a big club yet. He hasn't started that many games yet.

Hang on :

Young - check
English - check
Had one impressive spell of form in one seas as opposed to consistent over several seasons - check
Plays for a team that will try and rape us for transfer fee - check
Scores fuck all - check
Inconsistent final ball - check

He's ticking a lot of boxes!!!!

I'm not proposing we break the bank on him, but if they go down hes worth a punt, there's good potential there.

If Wigan go down James McCarthy will be the player to sign. We dont need him now though.

We most certainly do, our midfield is a bit of a shambles. Our best player is pushing 33 and everybody else is totally unconvincing. McCarthy would be a massive upgrade on Henderson/Shelvey in the dynamic midfield role. I think McCarthy will move this season regardless of whether they go down or not, hes way too good to be playing in a relegation battling side, we have been linked with him loads of times in the past but he sensibly chose to stay where he would get games and develop but its the right time now for him to move up to the next level.

Id offer them Spearing and a few million for McCarthy

I don't buy this at all, to call our MF a 'shambles' is a glib statement. We have scored more goals than anyone except United away from home and are one of the top scorers in the league. The forwards don't do that by themselves. We also have excellent possession stats and shots on goal stats. Defensively we are also not as bad as people make out (again look at the stats) so our midfield does not need a complete overhaul. We need 2 or 3 very high quality players (at the level of Countinho), notice I did not say stars ; maybe one forward, defo one midfielder and two CBs. There is not much wrong with the squad or the system, we have improved a lot in the second half of the season. The only thing letting us down most of the time are individual errors at critical moments, 2, 3 or 4 high quality players will improve that record considerably. Some people just want to see major change for the sake of it.

On McMannaman. I missed the first half and the only time I noticed him in the second was when he got into the box and blasted it well wide, having no chance because his route to goal was blocked by the defender, when he should have passed / cut it back. 'Greedy bugger' was my comment at the time.

So you didn't notice him breaking at pace to force the sending off, or beating Clichy for the corner (could have been a pen) that resulted in the goal?

We have scored plenty but thats mainly down to 1 player, I dont think McCarthy would necessarily add many goals from midfield, but he would give us in somebody on the same wavelength as Gerrard. Somebody who wants to play the ball forward and get at teams rather than sideways. I have nothing in particular against Henderson and Shelvey I just think McCarthy is a better player than both. For me there is still a big question mark over how this midfield is supposed to fit together when Lucas and Allen are available

Being judged prematurely - check.

Nope. I wasn't really watching the match, not exactly a must-see 😉 Hang=on I did see the 'possible pen' (never in a million years).

That isn't really the question though, anyone can have a stand-out match. It's whether he can maintain that form over a season. And that's a much tougher call on any young player.

The Times claimed yesterday that Rodgers was at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night to watch Callum McManaman & James McCarthy.

The McManamans of this world you need to spot and poach before they have their break out season.

There is nothing more over priced than an English under 21 attacking midfielder who has finished the season well.
