He really is, look at this example:

Jan 8 2011: Stevenage 3 Newcastle 1
FA Cup
Barton’s involvement: Starting XI

Bet 11: Backed Newcastle – £497.50
Bet 12: Backed Newcastle half time/full time – £250

What happened
Newcastle became just the fourth top-flight team to lose to fourth-tier opponents since the formation of the Premier League, with Barton - who played the full 90 minutes and scored Newcastle’s goal - losing bets totaling almost £750.

I don't understand the outrage.

OK, betting on games which your own club are playing is totally fucking stupid, but it's pretty clear to me he wasn't doing for any nefarious reasons, or to make any huge financial gains.

He made the mistake of saying it was a medical condition, and got some doctors to say he had addiction problems. That is such a weak legal strategy, weak weak sauce by his pussy lawyers. He should have come out fighting instead.

As a footballer, he has an edge compared to supporters when betting on games. He might want to turn that edge into a career after he retires, becoming a professional gambler. To prepare for that, he needs to start now to build up experience and knowledge. Then argue that if he is denied that opportunity to gamble, it is a breach of his human rights, causes a diminution of his future career prospects, and then take it to the European court. The European court will then agree with your view, that it should only be banned if you're doing it to cheat in games, otherwise you have a right to gamble, and then it's up to the FA to show on the balance of probabilities he was throwing matches. I presume the degenerate fuck has lost a shit load of money doing it, so the FA have no case. Game over. Dantes wins.

That's fucking brilliant – I can totally see it working in a European court.
