Who should partner VVD if Lovren is injured (and no Matip or Gomez available)?

Does anyone think Lovrens injury was a fake ? Klopp and him planned it so he could get some rest ? I was surprised we only lost 2-1 with that squad against a full Wolves side.

Make it stop.

I'm not sure if your serious? Why plan a fake injury. Klopp could have just not selected him from the off. Lovren may well recover and play Saturday but an injury wasn't 'faked'.

I'm not really sure what you're on about now, just that you said the CL was the best and being Champions was "just provincial" and "irrelevant" at which point everyone started laughing at you and you decided to shut the fuck up.

I think Dreamy was the only person who agreed with you, and that says it all really.

This is my post that started that debate : The CL is what defines a club's true global status, not PL titles and who truly gives a fuck about PL records except the media.

Not one person started 'laughing' unless you count posting their opinions as laughing. Which you probably do. Their posts were actually serious responses and yes the local lads (which I'm sure you understand was the meaning of using 'provincial') all said they wanted the PL, fair enough, however this from FFF probably summed it up best & clearly shows he got it whilst you didn't:

Nah. I get on the international stage they'd prefer the CL. In this country it'll be the title for most of not all.
I suspect the next generation of fans may feel differently. Most of Luke's mates would prefer to beat the likes of Barca & Real to the CL cos they see them as the teams to beat, not City, Utd or Chelsea.

I followed up your comment on all your friends wanting the PL with :

Which is still irrelevant on a global scale. The whole world watches the CL Final and if you win that your standing goes through the roof. I get the provincial mind-set over the international one - I lived more than 20 years of my life on Merseyside - but times have changed as FFF said, it's likely the younger generation of fans prefer the CL too because beating the likes of Barca & Madrid to the trophy is a greater feat. Or maybe I just saw us win too many titles when growing up, whereas winning the CL never gets old, it's always a massive buzz.

Which clearly sent you into a paroxysm of acrimonious posts (well two to be honest). Are we really going to bother going there again when both sides are entrenched? Pointless.

Both sides? There aren't two sides. Liverpool fans want to win the league above the Champions League.

Why go through all the theatrics, why not just tell the press, Lovren is being rested due to training ground knock? That way Conor Masterson or Nathaniel Philips could have been selected.

More proof it's not staged

I read Gomez will be ready on the 19th but Matip not until the end of the month. Not sure how true that is.

Klopp said only a few days ago that matip was going to be ready in a few days. Maybe he's had a setback. Wouldn't surprise me as the guy is made out of paper mache.

I'd probably prefer to see an U23 CB starting with Fabinho protecting the defence a bit more than have Fabinho starting at CB. Not a huge deal if not though as it will probably only be 2 games max with Matip so close to return.

Is Masterson ready?

Yes, I think so. He's certainly played regularly enough - his most recent game was at the weekend - and I posted some info about him yesterday. He's not ready in the sense of playing well enough to put pressure on the four fit senior CBs, but as an emergency CB he shouldn't represent a major gamble. He can't conjure up senior experience from nowhere, so there's inevitably a risk, but he's a very cool-headed and composed player who has been monitored by Klopp for well over a year. And if he plays alongside VVD, well, that's like the best 90 minutes coaching he'll have ever had.

I dreamt we lost our next match 4-1.

However, that was at home against Watford.

So either we're getting beat 4-1 by Brighton, or 4-1 by Watford whenever we play them.

Either way we're getting relegated.

Did I miss something, why's the young lad that came on for Lovren not in the poll?

Just have trouble believing that he had an injury so quickly into the game. As I remember it..he was 5 mins on and had to do very little yet managed to do a warm up before he came on. Also Klopps comment in post match interview about respect for the cup kind of makes me feel he had to play a senior player at the back. If he had started with VVD and something bad happened then the supporters would have gone nuts but Lovren is the soft option.

I expect Lovren to start on Saturday...

@manwithnoname - welcome back from your tourette's rehab, and happy new year. Please don't forget to take those drugs that the doctor ordered for you.

The press are saying he is injured, there is no reason to doubt that. It's hamstring, they can happen in light training.

I am a bit baffled by us letting Clyne and Solanke go.

We already look a paper thin squad.
I dont think we will sign anyone but Christ we need to!

LB cover, RB cover, CB x 2, CF cover
Especially at the back we look really fucked

We should have Virgil, Gomez, Lovren and Matip all fit in a week or 2. If we signed a CB he'd probably do a Steven Caulker and play a total of 15 minutes all season, mainly as a forward. Unless we signed Varane or something. Which we are clearly not.

There is clearly more to the Clyne story. Otherwise it doesn't make sense.
Ok, if he just wanted to go, we should still have kept him until summer.

Signing a CB now is pointless as they won't even be sharp for Brighton, but maybe doing so when Matip got injured as emergency cover or on a short term loan would have been more prudent. Hindsight is great.

I said exactly the same recently. We should have just said no in the interest of the team and fuck the individual - if we win it he would've got a winner's medal (I don't think he has enough games as it stands). Madness.

Clearly Solanke was surplus to requirements with Origi and Sturridge and he was clearly Klopp's third choice so that one makes sense.

Midfielders we now have in depth but I would still love a real left winger and maybe Fakir too (yeah, continuing to hold that flame).

CBs we've just been really really unlucky with injuries but with both Gomez and Matip coming back another signing seems unlikley and probably uneccessary.

I will be amazed if we make any serious signings this window.

If that was the case he moved up to second choice by simply not playing against Wolves..

I think this no longer applies. The club get a number of medals and they determine who get one.
