Maybe this is the first time in 10 years we have had a clean sheet in the league cup at Anfield?

I thought it was encouraging. I mean, its not some massive result but there were lots of good things to take out of the performance for me. On the other hand, none of the really young players on the outskirts really made any impression for me, and some looked like it was a bridge too far.

You didn't think Teixeira had a good game? I thought he did great (after some initial jitters) – really good awareness of space and teammates, something some of our more "senior" players lack.

Randall and Brannagan did OK.

I'm not aux fait with these things, but isn't this gegenpressing business supposed to be about pressing your opponents high up the pitch and winning the ball back quickly?

Cos Bournemouth were probably better at it than us for large parts of the game
That isn't strictly true. It's about cutting down their passing options and pressing only at the right moment, they did actually do this a lot but if the ball is being passed around the back there is no point in chasing it until an opportunity occurs - hence the reason far more sprinting is involved.

Agree Bournemouth pressed very well too - but that's nothing new for them and they don't press in the same way, (we swarm, they look like they go man for man). I'm probably being pedantic here.

I think we looked quite composed in the second half and put some decent play together. You rather have to accept that Origi cannot play off the last defender at this point, which means that we have a lot of players who want to drop off into the same space, and that we won't have tons of goal threat. What was promising today is that we saw some decent wing play, and you have to think that Ibe can get his way into the team, which is great. You wanted to believe he was just having problems with confidence in a pretty toxic situation. Also, hopefully we won't have to deal without Benteke & Sturridge for long, but if we do, I think Firmino can play as part of a front two in some games, if need be.

You have to be impressed by Firmino today, he's really quick, he has great little touches, he plays really good passes, he moves the ball on quickly, he's good on the dribble, and he has real strength. He's got everything you want in a player in the premier league and he could do a lot for us.

Allen on the other hand showed that he's not a DM (what a surprise), but also that he could well be the forgotten midfielder if he doesn't make better decisions. Lucas came on and we controlled the game, and had far fewer issues getting the ball out of defense.

Agree with so much of that .. part from the young players comment where I thought all did a good job, with Brannagan having the toughest job to do with Allen as his midfield cohort, having a poor game, however both Randall and Texeira had good to very good games.

Also note that Firmino is actually not fleet of foot (maybe over the first 5m though ?) but of thought .. and for us that's probably even more important because we've been floundering on the rock of defences due to a lack of creativity.

Ibe - that was the player many of us have seen in him, I just wish he'd start scoring because he has a very powerful shot and should be hitting the back of the net with some regularity (maybe 1 in 5). Had some of our players been in the right positions then he could have had 2 assists yesterday. Players like Sturridge or Ings would instinctively been there.

It's the Milk Cup mate.

That's the milk cup....

Whilst we have a striker issue, I think Origi if he is to play should play on the wings wiyh Firmino playing as lone man upfront. He got 16 goals in the Bundersliga playing as a lone striker.

Incidently.. to see tables in responsive.. you can scroll them left and right

I thought I would mention it, as I have only just figured it out

Thats the first performance of Firmino where he's shown his talent. It's seriously impressive. First touch was is sublime, he moves away from players with ease, moved the ball on quickly and was tenacious in winning the ball back. I'm a lot hopeful about his prospects after seeing that video.

Origi was stopping the ball dead with his first touch and also had a few clever flicks and back heels. But he's way too timid. He needs to be beaten with a belt for a little while and then I think he'd be a useful player.

Randall and Brannagan did OK.

Teixeira looked good at times but drifted in and out of the game. He's 22 though, I wasn't really considering him in the same mix, even though I guess he's at the same moment in his career, via a more circuitous route, so maybe that's not fair.

Randall and Brannagan did ok, but that's it. I'm not writing them off, but it's always nice when a player just really takes to the higher level of competition and has a really solid game.

Haven't read this so apologis if I'm quiffing.

Bogdan - Solid and composed. Great save early on. Should be challenging Ming for number 1 spot.
Randall - A bit naive at times, let too many crosses in but worked hard and often provided an outlet. He has talent, but he looks a bit raw for now.
Lovren - I hated him a bit less than I normally do. That's something. Decent block on Kerrmogant in the first half.
Toure - Who gave him another contract?....Skrtel. Decent
Clyne - Good follow up and finish. Played well.
Ibe - Very good game. Some very nice interplay with Tex and Firmino at times. Given he's one of our few players with real pace I could see him becoming important under Klopp.
Brannagan - I thought he was very good in the first half, quieter after. Always wanted the ball, had good movement
Allen - Ok. Disappointing first half, decent second
Texeria - Good game. Good movement and ridiculous effort for the goal. He has a lot of talent.
Firmino - Easily the best player on the pitch. Did the kind of thing Coutinho did when he was playing well. I'd love to see what he could do with Sturridge ahead of him and Henderson overlapping from midfield.
Origi - Did well for the goal, but he does so many things poorly. Very frustrating to watch.

Did you watch the second half? As someone who normally lives in a constant state of fear when we are leading 1 - 0, I spent a remarkably comfortable second half. Apart from the very last minute.

I agree with the comfort level - but Bournemouth were pretty timid in attack. As though they'd been playing for a draw. Maybe they forgot we scored? I'm not used to seeing it happen often either...

Racist.

Origi needs to be loaned out.

Either that or pushed out wide, where his pace can be utilised

A goalscorer he is not..
