Besiktas – secong leg MATCH THREAD

I mainly think Sterling, Balo and Sturridge can pull it off for us.
Lallana and Ibe too.

Coutinho and Henderson are big losses, Besiktas are pretty tough on their home turf.

This isn't on their home turf, we have a greater affinity with that stadium than they do it seems.

I'm not saying it'll be easy but we only need 1 goal and they will need 3. Hopefully we get the goal early and that's the tie done.

2007 - Champions League - Wed 24 Oct Besiktas 2 - 1 Liverpool

Don't understand your logic. If we score one goal, they'll need to score three. As it is they only need one goal to get into extra time or added time or whatever it's called.

Besiktas are 2nd in the Turkish league one point behind leaders Gala, so underestimating them would be foolish.

I'd go with:

----------------------Mignolet
----------Toure--------Skrtel-------Lovren
Ibe----------------Allen-----Can---------Moreno
-----------------------Sterling
--------------Sturridge-------Balotelli

Ming, Lovren, Toure, Skrtel, Ibe, Moreno, Allen, Can, Lallana, Sterling, Balotelli

I could easily go for Sturridge up top over Balotelli but feel like we should probably rest him for City.

Yeah that game was at their place, the Inonu Stadium. They are playing in Ataturk while their own is getting redeveloped and the fans hate it.

We will score.

We should rest everyone for City and play out a boring 0-0 using (poor the away fans):

Ward
Johnson
Toure
Lovren

Manquillo
Allen
Rossiter
Enrique

Borini
Lambert
Lallana

However they have more injuries and suspensions that we do. They lost to a team low in their league last weekend, Ataturk isn't their home ground and their home record (6-2-2) isn't as good as their away record (9-1-0). We have a very very good chance of progressing.

I see you put a lot of effort/research into that ! Johnson is out injured. Rossiter is out injured for 3 months. Enrique is out injured. Jeez Louise !!

Hmm, did not know that. In that case yeah the odds are in our favour.

But there is also no club doctor around who can make an abiding judgement on these so-called injuries. A few injections before the game should solve the problem.

There'll be a familiar face among the Liverpool supporters inside the Ataturk Stadium this evening as Ryan Babel takes his place among the travelling Kopites to cheer on the Reds against Besiktas in the Europa League. Brendan Rodgers' side take on the Turkish outfit in Istanbul holding a 1-0 lead from last week's first leg at Anfield and aiming to move into the last 16 of the tournament. They'll be cheered on by a whole host of supporters within the ground - both from Merseyside and from local fan bases - including former Liverpool forward Babel. The 28-year-old made 146 appearances for the club between 2007 and 2011, scoring 22 goals, and dropped by the Reds' team hotel in Istanbul on Wednesday evening to catch up with some old friends and meet some new faces. And Babel, who now plays for Turkish Super Lig outfit Kasimpasa, is confident his ex-club can book their place in the next round of the competition. "I am very excited about attending the game," he told Liverpoolfc.com. "Since I left Liverpool, I have always been a fan and followed the team over the years. "Now I live here in Istanbul, the game is very close to home so I felt the chance to watch them live was one I couldn't miss." Babel represented Liverpool on the last occasion they met Besiktas, back in the 2007-08 Champions League group stage. He played the whole 90 minutes as the Reds lost 2-1 at the Inonu Stadium before scoring twice after coming on as a second-half substitute in an 8-0 win in the return meeting at Anfield. Babel feels the home fans are still seeking a modicum of revenge for that evening in front of the Kop, but is confident Liverpool will have enough to prevail. He continued: "I've heard the stadium is sold out, which hasn't happened so far this season for Besiktas. "I am expecting a lot of noise from their fans. In the back of their minds, they'll know what happened the last time Liverpool played Besiktas a few years ago - I still think they want to have some kind of revenge. "It was a much better Besiktas side this time. They made it very difficult for Liverpool by staying compact and defensive in the first leg. "In the end, with the penalty, I think Liverpool have a good chance for the second leg. They have a lead, which means Besiktas have to attack. "Demba Ba didn't play in their last game because he had an injury, but if he's playing, Liverpool will need to keep an eye on him. He in general makes the most impact for Besiktas up front - but overall, Liverpool should have the confidence to win the game." Despite leaving the club in the January transfer window of 2011, Babel remains a popular figure among Liverpool supporters - particularly on Twitter, where his passion for the Reds remains evident each and every matchday. Babel said: "Most of the games I try to follow, but I also am obviously still playing myself so sometimes my games are at the same time as Liverpool's, so I have to watch the highlights. "Liverpool is still a part of me - since I left the club, I have remained a big fan. I still have a house in Liverpool and some friends there. It's a part of me and has been a part of my personal development. It was a good experience."

This is supposedly the team :

Liverpool's starting XI tomorrow: Mignolet – Toure, Skrtel, Lovren – Ibe, Allen, Emre Can, Moreno – Lallana, Sturridge, Sterling

as expected given all that has happened. only real choice was whether to start Studge or rest him for City.

That's not too shabby all things considered.

I would've preferred to see Ibe rested but he hasn't played that much anyway so he should be fresh enough to start again on Sunday. Thought Manquillo would've been given a chance to play in this game though. There's a lot of pace in that side - just soak up the early pressure they'll be throwing at us in search of an early goal, and then hit them with a lightning blitz and put the tie to bed early.

Allen is by far the oldest in that midfield, and he's 24.

Can and Ibe are great and all, but it's not the best of teams. I know we're restricted, but I do wish we had a little more in our squad than this.

I have never understood how the contraction of the words "would" and "of" results in "would've" ... surely it should be "would'f"

😉

Really ? Lucas, Gerrard, Johnson, Jones, Coutinho, Henderson, Flanagan, Enrique, Sakho, Rossiter and Markovic all out ..... and you think our squad should still have even MORE players than the team we're putting out ?
