I most have watched a completely different game as I thought we played extremely well and created good chances. we pretty much stood toe to toe with arsenal, the 'great footballing side' where as manu and chelsea sat deep soaked up pressure and hit arsenal on the break. obviously I would have perferred to win like chelsea and manu but I was pleased we attempted to play football. if we were as clinical as manu and chelsea we woud have easily have won that game.

I wondered if Degen would provide that but the answer was no and his effort off Stevies superb long ball was enough to gut any fan.
That one moment encapsulated our problems for me.

we retained the ball well but were profligate in front of goal. that's what I saw if you disagree fair enough. I can critisize for not being clinical but I'm not going to critisize the teams approach to the game.
We actually tried to retain the ball more than we have in recent months, so maybe that is a sign of growing confidence, but in terms of end product, nah it just wasn't there.

We came with a reasonable approach - we're not good enough right now to take Arsenal to town like Chelsea and Man Utd did, so we had to be organized and willing to work hard. The fact that we were however doesn't mean we had a good game. We're not Bolton.

Im a bit confused by this. Surely being clinical is scoring from the chances or half chances you have. Are you trying to say that we created more of those than Arsenal?

manu and chelsea didn't take arsenal to town they just finished their chances, in fact chelsea were absolutey dominted in their own back yard, they were paying counter attack AT HOME. its true we're not bolton but recently we've badly been lacking confidece and just weekend gone we couldn't pass wind so the manner in which we kept the ball was pleasing (at least to me) and frankly a little surprising.

They didn't have to go and play possession football. They had a game plan, which they stuck to and ended up winning comfortably.

Do you remember when we used to play Chelsea a few years back and always ended up losing despite having lots of possession (and very few chances)?

People used to kid themselves that we deserved more out of the game, when we didn't. We just got played by a better side. As Arsenal did in their previous two games.

frankly I don't think we have the defenders to soak up pressure and don't have the attackers to counter attack.

maybe not but have getting better we seem to have a little more confidence and have something resembling were as before we were all over the fucking place. yesterday game could easily have gone the other way with us keeping them out and taking our chance, we weren't taking to twon by the third place in the league who absolutely dominated posseson against chelsea at the weekend in chelsea's own back yard, I seriously feared a hiding but that didn't happen.

I think you may well be a bit biased Neil. I thought that overall there wasnt much in it, but when I reflect on the game I see Arsenal passing it forward and us passing it sideways and backwards. I see Arsenal wanting to win and us not wanting to lose. Thats saddens me because I firmly believe that we could have won if we had been more adventurous

Spidey, take off your red-tinted spectacles. Did you *see* the Arsenal-United game? United absolutely destroyed them. As Keni said, dominating possession does not mean anything if you're not using it to any effect. I think Arsenal were quite cagey last night in the first half precisely because they'd been badly stung twice in a week by teams letting them have all the possession then cutting them apart on the counter. When they figured out that we had neither the means nor the intention of doing the same to them, their confidence came back and they attacked us. Even then, they never played with any real fluency or belief, but we gifted them a goal and didn't mount any pressure of our own till the last 15 mins. We've seen the same pattern way too many times under Rafa, and I can't believe anyone seriously thinks that means we played well.

well after the way we were giving the ball away for fun at the weekend I was pleased we kept it better. when I said we played well, I was of course speaking relatively.

But we *did* play well at the weekend. Tempo, passion, defensive organisation and resilience, concentration, targeting of opponents' weaknesses: all of that was much better v Everton than v Arsenal. Football is not ONLY about passing the ball accurately, you know.

The big difference for me was that we replaced Carra as RB with Degen this time, not with Mascherano. That was a big mistake and I said it at the time. Degen is a shit defender.
