Good old Tommy, 'The Flying Pig,' the first sweeper-keeper. Never saw him play but I remember hearing so many versions of the supposed day he landed with such force the Kop shook and he concussed himself.

Very underestimated keeper, partly because he played in an era of great keepers like Banks and Jennings, but also because he was succeeded by an even better player, Ray Clemence, far and away our best keeper in recent times. "The Flying Pig" was an invention of the Evertonians, so we shouldn't really use that soubriquet when referring to one of our former players.

There wasn't an ounce of fat on Tommy, although he was stocky. He was arguably the first keeper to control his penalty area, rather than just standing on his goal line waiting for a shot to save. He didn't really have a weakness - the kind of keeper who creates confidence in the whole defence.
