A few people have mentioned how signing Thiago will allow us to shift to this formation and make us more versatile.

Stupid question time, can we do 4-2-3-1 with the 2 being Keita and Fabinho? or Keita and Hendo? or Hendo and Fabinho? Why do we have to stick to the 4-3-3 unless we pick up Thiago?

I'm not too sure about that line up since we play with a false 9, meaning Firmino dropping deep to allow runs from our wingers.
To answer your question, I'd have Hendo and Fabinho in those positions with Keita in front to them.

One of the big red flags over Hendo down through the years has been his inability to receive the ball from the CBs and then turn on it and play his way out under pressure. Thats one of the most fundamental skills required to playing that role. Hendo has lots of good attributes but close control, short passing and composure arent really amongst them.

Do you think Keita and/or Fabinho can do it?

I think this formation would suit the likes of Origi, Shaq and probably Brewster more.

So, it could be a good plan B.

Fabinho yes as thats kind of what he does now to a certain extent dropping into the CB space and opening up passing options.

Keita I just dont know where he fits, he certainly has the ability to pick up the ball and turn on it in tight areas but he also has a tendency to go hiding in games when we are under pressure which isnt something that you want from a player thats meant to break the lines and conduct the play.

4-2-3-1?

We'll still play 4-3-3, just with a triangle rather than an inverted triangle.

We went to a 4-2-3-1 on Saturday and Klopp has often tinkered with it. I actually think its necessary without TAA in the team in order to get more creativity in there.

I don't see how 4-2-3-1 offers more creativity than 4-3-3

It's not like we stick to one formation anyway

Its 4 forwards instead of 3 when we do it. Whether it ends up being Minamino and Firmino fluttering about playing 1-2s or Firmino behind Brewster just to add a deadly finisher to the center.

usually bobby is taken off for minamino or origi though. Or minamino comes on for one of the wingers.

The only change we make is that we go from false 9, to true 9, and one of the midfielders pushes up (usually keita as he's brought on). Taki has also played the midfield role.

I don't think we all of a sudden start flooding the box as it's not something we seem to do

I wonder if Minamino behind Brewster might actually be the ideal setup to get the best out of both of them?

All world class defensive midfielders have one classic trait.....consistency. Makelele, Busquets, Hamann, Kante, Mascher etc hardly ever have/had off days. Fabinho is beginning to worry me, especially in the 2nd half of the season, his form was patchy.

I watched our best performance of the season again recently (Leicester 0-4 Liverpool) and was surprised to be reminded that our midfield 3 that day was Wijnaldum, Hendo, Keita. Leicester's midfield 3 was Tielman, Ndidi and Maddison i.e. their best 3 and all in great form. We didn't have an obvious defensive midfielder and yet we comfortably limited Leicester's threat. Makes me wonder if Fabinho should be an automatic starter when fit.

Hendo is essential in most games and hopefully Keita will prove to be the missing link (the midfielder who can create something for the front 3). My gut tells me that we are gonna lose Gini and bring in Thiago...............

I think a regular starting midfield of ....................Hendo............Thiago...........Keita............ could work well and would put pressure on Fabinho to force his way back in.

Dont matter what Mike Bassett formation we play.. we gonna need aome refreshing of the squad. Also why the fuck does Gini want to leave ? Thought he and VVD had some inseperable man love ?

fabs was coming back from injury. He’s an amazing footballer and will shine again this season.

At his best he walks into the team but he needs to find some consistency. He's played quite a few games since the injury and he's been poor in too many of them. I think you're right, I think he will get back to his earlier form but if he doesn't then a player like Thiago beside Hendo seems like a good option.
