A lot of our fans can't remember what it is to see Liverpool as league champions. And I respect them massively for enduring these years without the opiate of league victory. I salute you all younglings, you're better fans than I. My youth was a progression of league victories, spattered with League, FA, and European cups. The past 26 years have seen a number of successes, but they have been the odd oasis in the desert compared to the lush fields we walked in my youth.

So...have we reached the era, the time that it will come again? I hope so. More for those who have become supporters without the victories that earlier generations knew. You deserve it. I'm taken with drink, but I'm thinking that Klopp might be the one.

Utd went 26 years without the title and then won it. Is it possible.........?

Though I haven't been able to experience a league triumph, Istanbul happened during my first year of supporting the club. I can't even begin to imagine what winning the league will be like.

What you have to remember is that many of the teams that have won the title since like United went through relegation, so did Man City, and Chelsea, and since we last won it consider the fate of Leeds, and Blackburn ? where are they now. We are lucky in that despite not winning it we have still challenged for the title - not as much as we hope but we still challenge and are still considered a big club.

The other way to look at it is that we won the damn thing so many times - we probably just got the fuck bored with it, and let others catch-up with an arrogance in which we presumed we could win it if we really tried - the problem is our methods and everything associated with the club got old and others moved on. I actually believe now that our new owners are showing the right attitude in trying to get us to win, and given the inconsistencies with Chelsea, and Man City - and the lack of quality players in world football other than those that play in Barca, and 1 or two in Real Madrid - we actually have a fucking chance of winning and competing despite the riches of Chelsea, and Man City in our league. It seems that the only thing that can set us back is selling our best players.

26 years is a long time - but I hope that despite all our problems throughout the years - bar one year - I always feel we have a chance of winning the title at the start of the season.

I was 7 years old when we last won the title and Im not really sure I understood it as a concept at the time, I have no real recollection of it happening. In the 90s I thought it was simply a matter of time before we got our act together as Utd were hoovering them up but then a decade ticked by and it looked like Arsenal and Utd had lcoked us out in the cold. By the time we finished 2nd under Houlier in 2002 I thought we were ready, there was a clear progression, we were improving year on year. Then the next season was a disaster, the 11 game run without a win knocked any belief out of the team, we finished 5th and Abromavich arrived with a wheelbarrow full of dirty money to change the landscape of English football forever. Weve gone close twice in the decade that followed, Rafa following Geds model of getting incrementally closer but falling at the last hurdle before unraveling when the task proved impossible. 2013 was the opposite, a title challenge that emerged from nowhere having finished 7th the previous season with a team and manager that had never looked like potential winners. Had we puled that off it would have been maybe our greatest title victory of all, but in the end the way we imploded then left a sour taste, a belief that our time had passed. I was convinced we had contrived to fuck up a golden opportunity, a habit unique to teams with a losing mentality.

This season seems to be one of those odd years when there are no real stand out sides and a team can pick up a 'cheap' title without necessarily being a great side. Its not beyond the realms of possibility that we could so, we seem to have a clear upward momentum going into a crucial phase of the season while all of the other sides are stuttering a bit. If we can put a run together between now and the new year we will well and truly be in the mix. We dont yet have a settled side under Klopp and the squad has the same weaknesses that it did previously and we are now battling on 4 fronts, history tells us thats likely to become a problem down the stretch. We also have is Utd, Arsenal and City still in contention, if we were trying to catch 1 team thats better funded than we are youd think its feasible but overhauling 3 teams better placed and better equipped than we are will be difficult. Had Klopp been given a whole season we might be sitting a few points closer to the top than we currently are. For now the focus is top 4, if one or two of the others fall away and we are still in contention come March then its a different story but for now we are dark horses, City are still overwhelming favorites.

We have a chance this year... Maybe even a good one... But then I'm old enough to have the inbuilt arrogance tempered into my steel during my first 16 years of life...

I feel sorry in a way for and salute you young uns... It was fucking awesome being the absolute pinnacle of the game, I'd imagine only United fans of a certain age would have experienced anything even vaguely similar to Liverpool fans of that era and even then with all their league hegemony they never occupied the same perch as we did in a continental sense... We simply were boss... It was a given.

We also had standing areas which made the atmosphere on whole different level as well, the only comparable experience in terms of buzz would be chemically enduced...

It's been so long I cannot imagine how it would feel if we did win it again... The most extreme form of nostalgia bomb... I don't know if my old bones could take it... I do want to find out though.

Very well put, I had a similar youth being 50 next birthday. I've always said this happened at the best time of my life, I probably care a little less now that I'm an old geezer who paid £1.90 into the Kop for my first match.
This season? A part of me says it's actually too early (yeah, I know....), build momentum with top four and a decent CL run next season, more proper investment and a real proper tilt at the title next season.

Great post btw.

Almost zero chance this year but a strong chance to challenge next season hopefully

You're acting like a fucking bellend lately mate, no offence. Everyone get on me I'm so cool with my glass half empty, ultra negative comments. Wind it in.

Why couldn't the league be like this when we had Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling, Gerrard etc in our title race year.

Mate, pretty much everyone on this site thinks fuck all of my opinions on football so it certainly isn't a 'look at me I'm being all cool' posting. I'm being realistic. I'm as happy as the next fan that we are superb to watch and I believe given time Klopp can get us where we all crave to go but talk about winning the league is just living up to the embarrassing reputation we have with other clubs for getting carried away with a few good results.
If lining the streets of Liverpool like we had won the league with 7 games to go thought us anything it should be to enjoy the run but shut the fuck up about winning the league until we actually do.

I'm not negative I'm just not thinking we can win the league because of a couple of superb away wins after 14 games.

I think your opinion is perfectly sensible Dreamy. I was a bit tiddly when I posted this thread and a massive part of me is waiting for the slump. There is just this daft wee man in a corner of my mind, however, who is screaming 'we're going to win the league'. I don't really want him to shut up either.

I think your realistic opinions are very valid, and not just because of today's shit result and shambolic performance.

It's a very strange league this year, though, and it's hard to predict. City should win it because have the most money and arguably best squad, and with Chelsea having a bizarrely awful season you'd have put money on them. But the way results are going it's very hard indeed to make a strong case for anyone.

Except maybe Leicester. Which just compounds the fact that it's completely fucking mental.
