Sterling is still raw and weak physically. His crossings are more miss than hit, without much power. But a good run out for him. The experience will help him develop,

Defensive lapses and poor finishing cost us but the improvement is marked. We showed that we can go toe to toe with the best. However we need consistency. This game should give us all the confidence we need.

Sterling is not all hype. This lad is something special. Shelvey is getting better. He needs to improve his decision making and cut out the rash tackles but that will come with experience. Pepe hasn't improved in commanding his box and taking control of crosses. Kelly is a good defender thats improving but is not better than Johnson in any shape or form. Coates was solid and will improve. Borini needs a goal for confidence and Gerrard needs to imrpove his consistency.

Overall I'm gutted because we bossed the game and should have bagged all 3 points. Saying that in itself shows progression.

Very harsh Y1, I don't think he looked raw or weak, I think he looked quite mature, apart from a bit of overzealous tackling back on Balotelli.
Very optimistic, this was not the same old, it was a couple if bad individual errors. Set up is good players good, Allen is fantastic.

regards

Great team performance. City only scored because of our own errors. We fix that and we will win a lot of games thats' for sure. We dominated the game and allen showed how much of a bargain he is. A lot of positives to take from this game. But the biggest tests will be how we play away from home and against the so called weaker teams. Raising our game for man city and arsenal won't be a problem. its how we do against the sunderland and reading that will determine our season.

Gutted.

Very pleased to see the likes of Sterling, Shelvey, Coates and Allen all playing sooooo well. The future is looking good.

Firstly that was an AMAZING leap forward from WBA (forget Hearts - the reserves played in that match). You could see the vision & the confidence that Rodgers has instilled and this is already a much better team than last season. Yes, it was easy to spot the lack of understanding between new team mates (especially up front) but the quality, the belief and the drive is all there .. and that was without Agger, Enrique (for most of the match), Lucas, Sahin and Assaidi (to say nothing of Dempsey and whoeverelse, if they arrive before the end of the month). Exciting times !

Fabio - absolute bollocks re. SG. He was the one pulling the strings for half the game (our half of the game) in almost every attack we made. Excellent performance though I really wish he'd find those old shooting boots again. Superb crossing yet again (for a change from a corner) and Kompany was lucky to see his deflection go over the bar.

Sterling - welcome to the first team mate, at 17 years old. Bloody hell. If that doesn't inspire Suso, Morgan et al then nothing will. Excellent performance though just a little more reserved than usual, to be expected. Excitingly he did not look out of is depth and can only kick on from here.

Pepe - WTF. He really needs to clean up his act re. crosses. He was miles away.

Defence. Well I was really worried before the KO but for most fo the match they performed much much better than I expected. Johnson was excellent, Coates done very well and Skittles - well what can say about that. Otheriwse I was surprised how well they contained Tevez & Balotelli.

Kelly I'm afraid is just not good enough for matches of this calibre, though generally a perfectly adequate stand in for Cups and as back-up.

Allen - what more can you say that hasn't been said. Absolute top class player and he's going to prive a marvellous buy.

Shelvey - not my favourite player by a long way but he did very very well today. Maybe there is hope. Still liable to throw in an horrendous reckless challenge (thank goodness today he missed Tevez whilst trying to wipe him out on the edge of our box) !

The Rodgers revolution is here and you would have to have been blind not to see it tonight.

Completely disagree froggy

The only strings Gerrard seemed to pull were his hamstrings his effort was so poor.

Easily our worst player on the pitch

Did well and encouraging pformance but we're gifting goals.

That said, Reina has to take some flack for both goals. Totally flapped for the first and I think he should have been yelling at Skrtel for the 2nd.

Sorry Fabs. Not in agreement at all. As if it matters (obviously doesn't one iota) but interestingly over on Red Cafe they were also singing his praises .. and you can imagine what he usually gets.

Brendan's thoughts:

The champions snatched a 2-2 draw after Martin Skrtel and Luis Suarez twice gave Liverpool a lead, with Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez scoring for City.
The boss felt 'the best team did not win' and spoke glowingly about the performances of new signing Joe Allen and 17-year-old Raheem Sterling, who excelled on his first Barclays Premier League start.

But despite being delighted with the way his team performed against Roberto Mancini's men, Rodgers remains keen to add to an ins column that currently contains Allen, Nuri Sahin, Fabio Borini and Oussama Assaidi.

Asked about possible activity between now and Friday's deadline, he said: "I am not sure. I would hope we could get some more players in.

"The players just need help. We lost players in the summer and we were only able to bring in a few to replace those. If we're going to strengthen, then hopefully we can get a few more in."

Liverpool's hopes of gaining three points were dented in the first five minutes when Lucas Leiva left the field with a thigh injury.

Rodgers added: "It's incredible, he's worked so hard, been brilliant in pre-season, and then in the warm-up he felt his thigh muscle when he took a shot.
"We'll have to assess it tomorrow.

"I thought the best team didn't win. I thought we were outstanding against a top side, the champions.

"Once we managed the first five or 10 minutes, tactically the players were terrific. We'd prepared for 4-2-3-1 and 3-5-2 but until you get on the field and play against the movement...

"We're disappointed not to win the game but there were a lot of young players giving us great hope for the future.

"The fight and the quality we played with today - and the atmosphere - was incredible."

Liverpool fielded their youngest starting 11 in the league since December 2003 (an average age of 24 years and 364 days), with Sebastian Coates, Martin Kelly and Sterling all in the line-up.

On Sterling, the Liverpool manager added: "It was an easy decision [to start him].

"I said when I first came here, I won't judge people on their status or what they've done, it's about what I see now in front of me, and he's a young player who's improved every single day since I came in here.

"He was a player who played on his own, in the one v one. You look at him now, playing for the team, his tactical understanding playing against a really experienced player. He was blocking the line of pass, he was pressing at the right time, he was coming back to block the lines inside.

"For a 17-year-old, playing against the champions, I thought his performance was fantastic.

"He has got a long way to go, because he has got to be consistent, and that's something I'll keep a close eye on."

Another player singled out by reporters was Allen, who won the Liverpoolfc.com journalists' man of the match.

On the Welshman, Rodgers said: "I think the Liverpool supporters will enjoy watching this kid play football.

"He is five foot six, but in terms of a footballer he is seven foot six.

"He is absolutely immense, his courage to get on the ball, his body work, his football intelligence is fantastic.

"We paid £15million for him and I said when he came in, very quickly that price will double. He will play here for many years and the supporters will love this kid."

Liverpool looked likely to win the game after Suarez's superb, bended free-kick past Joe Hart, but a mis-placed pass-back from the otherwise excellent Skrtel allowed Tevez to go one-on-one with Pepe Reina.

Quizzed on how frustrating that was, Rodgers said: "It's not frustrating. It's all part of the journey. I commend the courage. The easiest thing is to get the 'keeper to smash it up the pitch, then the opponents have the ball and are on the attack again.

"Martin Skrtel was immense. A wonderful first header. He's been a real stalwart in this first period of time I've been here.

"The angles in front of the ball will be the thing we work on, because for us to dominate games we need players with courage to have the ball, and Martin was very courageous.

"There is no blame on him. It's all part of our learning.

"He's obviously disappointed. He's a strong character, and he's disappointed now but all his teammates and the staff rallied around him."

Very telling about the fact that Rodgers isn't going to compromise on his philosophy one bit. Like it.

I thought Gerrard was fine. Not great, not bad. Put some decent balls in.

And the second goal is ALL Skrtel. To point blame at Reina is wrong IMO.

Hasten to add I couldn't give a toss if anyone agreed with me

I'm thrilled we've got sahin

Yup. Thought he let himself down. Wasteful with possession, didn't close down effectively and didn't move into space to help other players

I don't think he has the legs for this system.
It's not about legs, it's about knowing when and where to run. Gerrard wastes a lot of energy doing stuff he shouldn't be doing like busting a lung to keep a ball from going out for a throw in the middle of the pitch.

It is to a degree, you can't really cleverly Harry someone. You need to be there, like their shadow, constantly moving.

We could be at the stage where Gerrard needs to be getting subbed at 70 m

With Sahin and Shelvey around, I'm actually quite OK with that.
AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!

I liked how wide we played in attack. There always seemed too much space for Man City players to cover. When you play so wide, you almost don't have to do anything too special to create chances. Just pass and move, baby.

Like others, I also had a feeling it's going to be 2:2. But it's the best kind, we pushed them and they were lucky to escape.

Rodgers is so right about Allen's price doubling. He is the closest thing to Xavi not just in England, but anywhere. Uniteds and Chelseas of this league will sorely regret letting this lad slip. Did he have 100% passing rate in the first half? Unbelievable.

It was good to see big Andy. I think he should stay.
