Academy manager Gregor Rioch said: "Conor is a player that has been very highly thought of since the day I walked through the door.

"He has a real drive and determination to be a professional player."

He added: "He's been around the first team and that will no doubt be good for his development as a player and to have a first year apprentice signing professional forms is a great achievement."

AIDY Boothroyd is convinced that Conor Thomas has got what it takes to become a Coventry City hero.

The teenage playmaker made his first team bow for the Sky Blues in the FA Cup win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

And Boothroyd is predicting big things for the young midfielder.

Conor is a terrific young player,” said the City boss. “He moves the ball really well, he’s a fantastic passer – which is something every team needs – and he’s very brave.

“When we talk about bravery we perhaps think of players going in for 50-50s or heading the back of another player’s head.

But there are different forms of bravery, like when you get on the ball and don’t just get rid of it like a hot potato, you’re comfortable enough in your own ability to use it.

"When you play against a team that has that bravery and confidence you get problems, you’re not quite sure what they’re going to do, so it’s a great asset to have.

Coventry City's 17 year old academy player Conor Thomas, who made his senior debut in the 2-1 win in the FA Cup third round tie at the weekend, has spoken to the Coventry Telegraph about his debut and his time at Coventry City.

Thomas said, "I was delighted to get on and make my debut but the most important thing was that we got the win and progressed through to the next round in the FA Cup, so it was a good day all round."

"I have been on the bench a few times and I think the gaffer has just been waiting for the right time to break me in slowly but I was just pleased to get on. I had no idea that I was going to play but when you are on the bench you know you have always got a chance. You just have to keep working hard in training and hope that you get it."

"The boys started off really well in the first half and got the two goals and Palace came back into it in the last ten minutes when they had a few chances, but Westy made a great save and kept us in the game really. The main thing was that we won and got through. I felt I did all right. It was a pretty steady debut and just nice to get it under my belt."

" I was a little bit nervous before I went on but once I was out there I just played my normal game. The manager told me to relax and go out and do what I normally do in training. I am a central midfielder and a big lad so hopefully I can dominate in there in the future."

"I like to keep the ball and try to pass is simple, nothing too flashy and I don't mind tackling as well. I like to get forward and get a goal if the time is right. I was a Man United fan 😱 when I was younger so my idol is Paul Scholes.
"

"I am playing in the FA Youth Cup tonight with the Academy so it has been a big week for me. It has been postponed a couple of times because of the weather but it is always good to be involved in the competition."

"It is a big game for the lads and hopefully we will be able to follow the first team and progress in that as well. It is nice going back because the lads will have seen me get on against Crystal Palace and they can see that if you work hard at this club the manager will give you a chance."

"I am not sure what the manager has got planned for me for the rest of the season, whether it comes to a stage where I need games on loan for my development, so only time will tell. It is a great atmosphere in the dressing room and the senior lads all help the younger players. I was only 17 at the end of October but I have signed professional forms until I am 19."

"I have been at the club for nine or ten years now. I started playing Sunday league football for Christ the King and was scouted by Coventry and have been here since the under 7's and under 8's."

"I am a Coventry lad from Coundon and went to Coundon Court School so it was nice to get on for my home town club, and a dream come true really, especially at home in front of the fans. It was a great experience and hopefully I can push on from here."

Thomas burst onto the academy scene 2 years ago aged just 14, and after some excellent performances Coventry manager Aidy Boothroyd has decided to take a look at the lad. He hasn't yet been given a squad number, but the now 16 year old who has England u-17 experience looks set to become part of the Coventry first team set-up sooner rather than later. He may not be quite ready to make an impact on the 2010/11 season, but look out for him in the not too distant future.

LIVERPOOL FC made a shock transfer deadline day raid for Coventry City starlet Conor Thomas today - but were the Sky Blues right to let the young playmaker leave?

The Reds have agreed to take the 17-year-old central midfielder on loan until the end of the season with a view to a £1m move in the summer.

Thomas has only made two first team appearances for City including a start in Saturday's 3-2 defeat against Birmingham City.

But is the deal a good one for the Sky Blues? Cast your vote here...

Should Coventry City have sold Conor Thomas to Liverpool?

Yes. Good money for a rookie 2.1%

No. We should keep our talented kids 54.6%

Perhaps but another year would have been nice 13.3%

Do you reckon he'll get a game?

Doubt so, the offal says "Thomas will be based with the reserves at the Academy." When was the last time we had a scum fan as a player?

Oh, I forgot about that. Perhaps anyone who caught the Birmingham-Coventry FA Cup match might be able to comment a little on the lad.

LIVERPOOL FC have set-up a loaded deal for Coventry City starlet Conor Thomas based on club appearances and England caps, the Telegraph can reveal.

The Sky Blues cashed in on the brightest young prospect the club have produced for years yesterday during yesterday's crazy transfer window.

The 17-year-old central midfielder made the shock transfer deadline day move to Anfield on loan with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season - after it emerged that Reds scouts had been tracking him for months.

The Coventry-born teenager only made his full senior debut for the Sky Blues against Birmingham on Saturday.

And the youngster had been held in high regard by manager Aidy Boothroyd, who views him as an exceptional talent whom he had hoped to enjoy the benefit of in the future.

But the club have decided to sell the former Coundon Court schoolboy who started out playing Sunday minor league football for Christ the King before joining City’s Academy under-sevens and eights.

The teenager only started training with the first team full-time in the summer
after signing professional forms and had made just one substitute appearance against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago prior to the weekend.

But it has emerged that he has been watched by Liverpool scouts for the last 12 months and instead of letting the player develop at his home town club and then sell, City have agreed a loaded deal that will see the club reap significant financial rewards subject to first team appearances and international caps for England.

While all yesterday’s talk had been about Keiren Westwood’s future, Thomas – who only turned 17 in October – was at Liverpool’s Academy having a medical, and is now expected to spend the rest of the season there training and playing in the reserves as the Premier League giants nurture his talent.

Doesn't say much, actually.

COVENTRY City manager Aidy Boothroyd has confirmed that the decision to send teenage prodigy Conor Thomas on to Liverpool FC was taken over his head.

But he stressed that he is “not going to bite the hand that feeds me†and will concentrate on turning round the Sky Blues’ fortunes which took another dip last night when they slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against promotion favourites Nottingham Forest.

Two freakish goals put the visitors in charge after Marlon King had fired City in front with his third goal in three games.

Ecclestone doesn't support Man U now, he has been 'cured' like Carra and the Blues, he's 100% Red now and his comments on Twitter during the FACup match proved it.

ENGLAND football superstar Steven Gerrard has taken on the job of mentoring Coventry teenager Conor Thomas since his move to Liverpool.

The Merseyside club’s captain has taken the 17-year-old Coundon lad under his wing this week after he joined from Coventry City.

Staff at Coundon Court School have been told their former pupil is getting lifts to training and one-to-one sessions with one of the best footballers in the country.

Conor joined the Premier League giants on a season-long loan during transfer deadline day on Monday – to the disappointment of many Sky Blues fans.

He had been hailed the brightest young prospect the club have produced for years but left days after making his first team debut.

His former PE teacher at Coundon Court School Marc Thomas said: “Steven Gerrard is his mentor. Dalglish just rang him and said ‘Steven Gerrard will pick you up’. He’s kind of taken him under his wing.

“It’s just one of those things. He would probably have got more game time at City but when you have one of the biggest clubs in the world banging on your door, it’s an opportunity that might not come along again.â€

The season-long move with a view to a permanent deal came after Conor made his Sky Blues debut in the FA Cup defeat at Birmingham City.

It’s been quite a week for Mr Thomas – no relation to Conor. He also taught rugby player Tom Woods at Woodlands School, who made his England Debut in the Six Nations opener against Wales last night.

Mr Thomas has been teaching for 17 years and joined Coundon Court School on the same day as his talented namesake six years ago.

“We knew he was supposed to be a good sportsman because we co-ordinate with the primary schools,†he said. “He’s a big engine in the middle of the park and a big personality on the pitch.

“If you want to achieve at the top in sport you have to have the desire and the personality for it.

“He has all the attributes and he’s going to be working with some outstanding people at Liverpool. If he keeps developing his game then the world’s his oyster.â€

Conor started out playing minor league football for Christ the King before joining City’s Academy under-sevens.

He left Coundon Court School at the end of his Year 11 studies last July. “He was never big headed, just a really nice lad,†said Mr Thomas.

“He hasn’t got an arrogant bone in his body. We would love to see him playing in the Champions League or on Matc of the Day.

“Everyone at the school is so proud of him.â€

As long as Gerrard doesn't get him into Phil Collins then the lad might do well.

Staff at Coundon Court School have been told their former pupil is getting lifts to training and one-to-one sessions with one of the best footballers in the country.

That is pretty interesting tho

KEIREN WESTWOOD says Conor Thomas deserves his shock move to Liverpool FC.

The Sky Blues' teenage starlet secure a loan move to the Anfield giants on the final day of the January transfer window and is expect to complete a permanent move in the summer.

And Westwood - who was the subject of intense transfer speculation with his contract set to expire at the end of the season - believes the 17-year-old playmaker deserves his big chance - even if it does leave Coventry City short on first team numbers.

He added: “I am delighted for him but with that and the injuries we have got, we need some bodies.

“He’s a young kid and to go to a massive club like that is a progression for him. He obviously won’t make the first team yet but he’s one for the future.

COVENTRY City Academy boss Gregor Rioch has revealed that Conor Thomas has always been destined for the top.

The Coventry-born midfielder, who only turned 17 three months ago, is now developing his young career at Liverpool after flying through the youth ranks with the Sky Blues where he achieved pretty much every goal that was set for him under the watchful eye of several high-profile clubs.

In an ideal world he would arguably have stayed and continued his apprenticeship at the Ricoh Arena but with City continuing to lose money it was decided to cash in on the talent, for whom the club have received an initial loan fee that will increase if, as expected, the deal is made permanent in the summer.

Asked if the former Coundon Court schoolboy has got what it takes to make it in the Premier League, Rioch said: “Yes, he’s a very, very talented footballer.

“He sets himself targets and achieved nearly all those we set him while he was here.

"He was a little bit behind when we set him the target of getting on the first team bench at 16
but he achieved it very soon into his Under-17 career and went one better when he got himself a full debut at 17 years of age against Birmingham the other week.

ALTHOUGH many Coventry City fans were disappointed to see Conor Thomas - one of the hottest prospects the club has developed for years -leave for Liverpool FC last week, Academy boss Gregor Rioch insists there is plenty more talent coming through the ranks.

And the departure of Conor Thomas has opened the door for fellow 17-year-old midfielder Josh Ruffels, who is the latest name to appear on Aidy Boothroyd’s team sheet as one of his matchday substitutes.

“We have some talented lads here,†said Rioch. “Conor was a little bit special because he made his debut at Under-18 as an Under-14, which is very rare, and he played regularly for the 18s as an Under-15 and 16 and was ready to step up to the first-team squad when he went full-time.

“We have been very fortunate that we have had managers very supportive of the Academy and brave to put young lads in and Aidy Boothroyd is certainly progressing our hard work on to another level with the young lads.

COVENTRY City vice-chairman Gary Hoffman has sensationally quit after growing increasingly disillusioned with the way the club is being run by owners SISU.

Chairman Ray Ranson’s right-hand man and close ally tendered his resignation this week – which has been accepted by a new-look Sky Blues board of directors – following concerns about the way the club is moving forward and recent changes in the boardroom.

Sources close to the 50-year-old banker and life-long City fan claim that the sale of teenage prodigy Conor Thomas to Liverpool last week for an estimated £1 million, if the deal is made permanent in the summer, was the final straw – going against Ranson’s vision when he took over the club three years ago to build a young and talented squad capable of taking the Sky Blues to the Premier League.

It is understood that Ranson also opposed the departure of Thomas, as he did the sales of Scott Dann to Birmingham for £3.5 million and Danny Fox to Celtic for £1.5 million in July 2009.

CONOR Thomas is making a dramatic return to Coventry City.

The precocious midfielder – who was controversially loaned out to Liverpool for a quick-fix £250,000 fee in January with a view to a £1.5 million permanent move this summer – has picked up an injury in training with the Reds and is set to return to the Sky Blues for treatment.

And the Telegraph understands that the 17-year-old talent will be staying at his home-town club. He has apparently failed to settle at Anfield and is not necessarily what Liverpool are looking for at the moment despite having earned his first cap for England Under-18s against Italy while he has been training and playing in their reserves.

City boss Andy Thorn insists the club’s Academy graduate will receive a warm welcome home at the Ricoh Arena, saying: “I spoke to Conor yesterday because he has got a hamstring injury which he did in training so I will be speaking to Liverpool to find out what’s happening.

“But if they don’t take him, then we will welcome the boy back with open arms because he’s one of ours and we’ll have him back around the fray, and I think the way we are playing will suit him as well.

“It has been a great experience for him going to Liverpool because he will have seen their standards and what other clubs do.â€

Thomas, who is regarded as one of the hottest prospects to come from the Academy for years, stunned fans when he was snapped up by Liverpool on transfer deadline day, just two days after making his full senior debut for the Sky Blues in the 3-2 FA Cup fourth round defeat at Birmingham.

His move sparked controversy in the board room, prompting then vice-chairman Gary Hoffman to resign citing the deal as the last straw in his on-going concerns about the way the club was being run.

The deal was also strongly opposed by then chairman Ray Ranson who resigned the following month, while then manager Aidy Boothroyd was also privately unhappy with the decision which was taken above his head.

It has since emerged that the reason behind the deal was because City were desperate for the cash from the Premier League club who had been watching the player for a number of years.

The initial £250,000 loan fee helped ease the club’s growing financial difficulties that saw them go two days away from administration at the end of March until the club managed to secure £4-5 million from their Sisu investors to tide them over until the end of the season.

If Liverpool want to take up their option to sign the lad it is understood that it would cost them £1.5 in total, but there is rumoured to be a very large agent’s fee involved that would eat into what City would receive, and that is understood to have been the main reason for the board room rift.

But as it stands, it appears that the former Coundon Court schoolboy is heading back to Coventry to continue his footballing education and where his home town club will be able to enjoy the benefits of his talent for the foreseeable future.
