A friend of mine who was teaching in China told me she went on a train journey once and the floors of the carriage were running with the stuff.

I can believe it. Definitely on those long haul trains (15-24 hrs) into the bush.

Though to be honest trains from the major cities are fucking ace. Travel at well over 200 mph, great seats with sockets for your iphone / computer, dead smooth and virtually silent. And cheap.

There was a summary of him on the commentary, which basically said there's no in between with him - he's either brilliant or useless.

He's actually not been that good for Switzerland. But for Basel and Bayern its a different story.

This guy is pretty shite. His latest display against France pretty much confirmed that.

I'll be gutted if we sign him.

If our summer consists of us spunking £35m on him and Moreno, we're fucked.

Yep, not impressed in the slightest and he looks like exactly the sort of player who will be a passenger in this league. He's got a foreign name though and plays for Bayern, so he's worth the money infinitely more than that English lad.

Erm perhaps he is not the right person, but based on what little evidence is available the English lad isn't the answer either.

He played for a squad that featured four other Liverpool players, and didn't even manage to make half the impact that foreign named lad has done.

Perhaps the correct answer is that neither player are up to it and we should look elsewhere.....but hopefully not in England.

He played about 30 minutes of football in a team that couldn't keep the ball. I never said Lallana was the right person, FWIW, but there's plenty of posters on here keen to talk down Lallana because he's English, and keen to talk up and spunk £30m on any mildly glamorous player from overseas. Personally I think Lallana is heavily overpriced and Shaqiri would be too, I just find the hypocrisy a joke. I've got no problem with us wanting to sign a top drawer "star" for the right money, but people seem keen to jump on any bandwagon that rolls in, for any price, so long as he's not English.

yep never understood the hype regarding shaqiri. I dont see what he would offer. seems an ok player but nothing compared to the hype he's been getting. I hope he stays at bayern.

I haven't seen much evidence of that in the case of Lallana.

As I said in the match tread. Judging a player on 2 WC performances is just stupid.
Diouf was a star in 2002, how did that turn out?

my thoughts too, Even youtube before the WC did not exactly do him favours. seemed to lack a lot of intensity/desire. Unlike Bayern, Swit gave him the chance to be the star of the team, dictate and control, sadly this did not happen.

All players are judged on performances. Pointless calling out a single 'example' as proof that your theory is correct.

Equally, based on one game of Suarez, you would say he is one of the best strikers in the world. And you'd be right.

However, you've got to look at more than 'headlining' characteristics when judging a player

Agreed, but taking isolated games is stupid, as you clearly can get stung. Sanchez has proven a bit more than Shaqiri and looks the more likely to be a success, but he too would be a risk - every signing is, especially when we're talking about this kind of money. We need another midfielder or two, so I'd take Lallana (at the right price, so unlikely) and Can, if we added Sanchez to that and sort out the backline, then great. If there's a theoretical competition about who we should sign, then given the choice between Shaqiri and Sanchez, I'd take the latter, but there's so much to factor, like wages, interest from elsewhere, etc.

I guess the main frustration is none of us know what's in the pot. I don't think we should overspend regardless, but if we had an idea, then it might add a bit of perspective when considering what's representing value for money.

When judging a player you need to look at more than 2 WC games before calling someone shite

I think it's pretty evident when they're a top player. There's always glimpses. It has to e a bit worrying when a player shows nothing in 2 games.

That's just ridiculous really, I mean, what did Gerrard show in two games at the WC? Glen Johnson had two better games than he's had all season for Liverpool, Milan Baros had a storming tournament a few years back, you could have judged him over 8 games in that tournament and taken it as a given he'd be a star. Casillas judged over two games, the multiple trophy winning Casillas, looked like a Sunday league player.

What we got from Shaqiri and Sachez was just glimpses, in 360 minutes of football between them, yet Lallana doesn't do it in 30 minutes or however long it was, ergo "you can tell". It wasn't "two games", talking about bending the truth.
