World Cup Play-offs

I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm sure it's shit.

By not installing some flash European name who may give them some semblance of a chance next year - they have demonstrated that focusing on any short term gains they may get out of that are fruitless, because the intent of any of those coaches is not to build for future success.

By installing an Australian, and someone with a history of long-term development of youth players, they've focused on the right things; future-planning, youth development, sustainability.
It's the world cup finals. It's all about that tournament on its own merits.

There won't be a single nation (apart from Australia it would seem) who are there to build for the future.

His selection would be fine after the World Cup but by installing him now
they may have well as not qualified at all.

And who's to say he has to be some flash European name. There are numerous top quality coaches available with World cup and international experience.

Unless he's going to scrap every player over 28 for the WC it doesn't make any sense.

There is not one analyst, pundit, football writer, or fan in this country who agrees with you on this. A situation I'm sure you're used to in most cases but anyway. By continually negating the need for a long-term plan, Australia are in the fucking parlous state they're in; getting dicked 6-0 by all and sundry with a squad full of bloated 40-somethings. They are reaping the rewards of 7 years of short-term stop-gaps, and it'll set them back years. Delaying that by another year so they could get some potentially tiny incremental gain at a World Cup, as per your suggestion, would be idiotic.

Well who's to say he won't do relatively well at the world cup, eh?
You can only work with the players you have.

Anyway he's coached Ryan so he has some man management skills.

Well that's just a false statement. I've spoken to a few fans who wanted a big name for the world cup.

What about Guus Hiddink? He's available and was at the helm during thier best ever showing.

And I'm surprised you see a positive showing at the world cup as a tiny gain.
Everyone knows 'soccer' is a 2nd tier sport at best in this country but one of the best ways to lift interest and increase the number of people playing it and supporting it is a good World cup.

This World Cup is a great chance to attract the next generation of fans and players alike. Nothing grips this nations attention more than its sport and a good showing on the biggest stage of all will do wonders for football over here.
