Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants Derby County midfield marvel Will Hughes - to groom him as the next Steven Gerrard, writes Alan Nixon in the Sunday People.
Rodgers is hot on the trail of the young Ram who has been starring in the Championship and attracting big interest, headed by Manchester City and Arsenal.
Derby want at least £7 million for home-grown Hughes but could be open to a sale and loan back deal with one of the big clubs.
Rodgers's spies have been homing in on Hughes and could strike a deal with Nigel Clough's side shortly, but they are also happy to leave him at Pride Park to play.
Liverpool have found it hard to land top big-name targets this summer - but Rodgers has collected bargain players he can work with.
But landing Hughes - one of the most wanted young English players around - would be a huge statement.

He's always up to something, this gobshite. It's common knowledge - you want to plant a story, then give Nixon a bung. Never, ever, take his reports about transfers at face value:

Alan Nixon, one of football's most prolific reporters, has severed his links with the Independent following an argument over an alleged conflict of interest involving Wayne Rooney's agent.
Nixon had written for the newspaper for over a decade when his shareholding in Proactive Sports Management proved his undoing at the end of July. Proactive, known since July as Formation Group, is headed by Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford. The freelance reporter, who still writes for the Daily Mirror and the People, owns 20,000 shares in the company.
The shareholding, which Nixon has held since the company floated in 2001, has long been common knowledge in the football world, prompting comment in Private Eye as well as a Sunday Express article in January 2003. Nixon took legal action over the piece, which he claims to have settled for £18,500.
Nixon's interest in Proactive again attracted attention in July, this time from Kenny Fogarty, an ardent Everton fan who took issue with the journalist's coverage in the Independent of the Rooney transfer saga.
Mr Fogarty also pointed out on the website that he had just sent an email to the Independent's sports desk, asking: "How does a Proactive Sports Group shareholder get to write for your newspaper, offering contradictory stories on a common theme over the course of two days?"
Nixon claims that although the previous sports editor, Paul Newman, was aware of the situation, his replacement, Matt Tench - who had rejoined the Independent from the Daily Mail in April - was not. "Matt was new to the job and got startled," he said. "He knew nothing about the court case [against the Sunday Express]." Tench declined to comment on the matter.
Nixon further claims that Tench told him that stories about Proactive clients could no longer appear under Nixon's byline.
"With me it's all or nothing. I decided, 'Let's just leave it'," said Nixon. "It's not as though they paid me enough that I can't live without it."
Nixon says he bought 20,000 Proactive shares at flotation, and has not bought or sold a single share since. "I couldn't tell you how much they're worth," he insisted. "I never look. But I can't imagine they're worth as much as when they started. It's a matter of some amusement among people."
The shares were worth £5,000 when the company floated and are now worth £1,750.

My mates a Derby season ticket holder and reckons hes totally ridiculous.
Powerful, clever and mature.
If we could get him at a reasonable price, would be a sensible signing.
I think someone will get him soon.

I'd advise you to that 2nd youtube clip I posted. Looks immense tbh.

He'd fit right in.

He's good. But we've already got Jordan Rossiter, who will be part of our midfield in a few years time.

.... It's pretty compelling

Maaaaybe we should buy him and loan him back for the season

As far as I'm concerned, I'm just surprised other clubs haven't yet tried to get him.

I've also heard good things about Rossiter but he's still very young, he's 16 I think.
Carra seems to rate him.

Following his debut last season where he started one game for the Championship side, 17 year-old Hughes has played every Derby fixture this term bar one.

He also made his debut for Stuart Pearce's England under-21 side last month, coming on as a second-half substitute during their 2-1 win over Northern Ireland. Moreover, he became the second youngest under-21 debutant.

Unsurprisingly, the attacking midfielder's consistency landed him the Football League Young Player of the Month award for November.

It is the reason why Premier League scouts - notably from Liverpool and Arsenal - have been watching Hughes for the last 12 months.

And if reports are to be believed, Barcelona are also tracking the blonde-haired starlet following his emergence in England's under-17's last season. However, Derby's owners have made it clear that they will reject any offers for the £4 million-rated player.

A hint at where Hughes' future lies?

Off the pitch at Derby County, they have a fairly innovative ticketing system to maximise attendances. On it, they have a more old-fashioned way of pulling in punters, a young, stylish footballer catching the eye of everyone in English football. And beyond.

The queue for the young midfielder Will Hughes is long. Arsenal, Fulham, Manchester City, Liverpool and even Barcelona have been credited with having their heads turned by the young central midfielder.

Hughes uses the ball well, can protect his back four or play behind a front two. He has been integral to Derby's season and has a left foot that suggests he has a real future at higher levels of English football.

Hughes was unfazed by the step up to Championship level and that temperament is appealing to Premier League clubs sniffing around a player who stands out with his almost white shock of hair.

The 17-year-old has already become the second-youngest player ever to pull on an England shirt for the Under-21 side. He got the call-up after an A level class. That was reward for how effortlessly he has stepped up from youth football to reserve football and to the second tier of English football.

The price tag, after just 25 Championship games, is already beyond £5m. That has been the level of his impact. Those in the know expect Hughes to go on to play for England, already. Nigel Clough, his manager at Derby, could play. He has already drawn a comparison with Liam Brady – that is some praise.

Geez, watching those YouTube clips, you can't miss him, can you?
That hair.

So you're saying I would be able to tell if it was him who scored while watching a Russian stream being recorded with a potato?
