Why are we, the supporters, so apathetic?

It also sums up the forum these days though. When we're winning and top of the league the match thread is 6 pages long. Had we lost and been 15th the match thread would have been at least twice that, probably more..

I agree with that, I noticed that the Crystal Palace thread was really short compared to normal.

LOL it's difficult to resist the idea that some of us have been disorientated by our early success this season, and would be much happier if we returned to the habit of losing so that we could have a good moan about what's wrong with the team.

yeah, it's not about footy this camera shit, it's fucking everything. i recommend nuclear holocaust.

It was relatively short because Lucas didn't play; if you take the pro- and anti-Lucas posts out of any matchday thread they'd all be half as long.

It doesn't really. It's always that way. Winning and success creates a lesser discussion because there's less argument to be had. Nobody is going to take much time of their day to disagree with people saying 'well done!' and 'we played well!'. It will be the same throughout the forum world.

Bad news is always subject to far more analysis than good. It ain't footy. Look at any newspaper. Think of the last time you achieved something and the last time you fucked something up. Which did you dwell on more? Humans are doomed to measure experience in negative terms.

Happy Monday morning!

I have been to quite a few games of my local team, Aldershot Town in the past few seasons and their support is pretty loud and it is exactly for the reasons Woland has laid out, and I can't even begin to imagine similar scenes replicated from a terrace that holds about 1k people to one that in its pomp was holding 20k (that's a guess!) people.

A ticket ranged from £5-£8 for an under 16, £10 for a student and £14 for an adult. There are boozers in the ground that let you in from 12 - you go along and drink with people you know for a few hours and then stroll into the ground knowing you can pick a spot about 15 mins before kick off. You have groups of people in the stand you get to know, and you all start singing together. But one big thing is that a lot of those making the most noise and most consistently are aged about 15-17. In its heyday (so my uncle tells me), The Kop was full of lads of a similar age who had gone from school straight to a job in the docks and who would save their money for the booze before a game at the weekend. Its almost like getting drunk in the day was that periods version of going out in the evening.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people who don't drink at the game that much wanting to save themselves for going to a bar/ club that evening.

Whatever the reasons though - I have had some great experiences in the stands including our CL QF win against Arsenal (and dancing around hugging what felt like half of The Kop) and an away trip to Bolton where I got the train from Liverpool which was just absolutely carnage and I thought the Torres Bounce on the train was going to derail it!

2 mins 2 seconds in, watch that. That sums up modern day football support for me.

Suarez has just scored to put us 1-0 up, races off in celebration, dives in front of the fans, and there they are too busily trying to get their phones out of their pocket to video/photograph the fucking thing to jump around actually celebrate.

That happens at grounds up and down the country. What the fuck's wrong with people? I realise it's the Anny Rd end of the Centenary which is day-tripper central and probably made-up of folk who are visiting Anfield for the first time, but Christ almighty celebrate the fucking goal.

I remember my first few games at Anfield and when John Barnes scored I ended up about 6 rows down from where I was sitting.

The whole thing's fucked.

It's nice to see families able to enjoy football, without the fears of gang violence or being crushed by hoards of celebrating fans throwing each other around. Football isn't tribal anymore, that was fixed with all-seater stadiums and the barriers coming down. Treating human beings like caged animals tends to make them behave like caged animals.

Football is a sport, it's entertainment, enjoy it for what it is. Sing the songs, appreciate the game and the talent on show, support your team...It's easy really, if a problem exists in your mind about how other people behave, then there's only one person in the world who can fix that problem.

I think there's a lot of truth in this. We can't expect the entire crowd to be clones of ourselves. It's good for different people to have the opportunity to see a match at Anfield and we shouldn't be hostile to newcomers. Even if they do kind of camp in their seats before the start of the game, and look up at you with surprise when you want to get past and they have to gather up their picnic baskets, flasks and primus stoves. 😀

It's all over football at all levels now. The old myth that the really enthusiastic fans are at the lower league clubs is just that these days. The new stadia encourage indolence and distractedness. I got dragged to MK Dons a while ago - everyone sits in the hotel restaurant that's looking on to the pitch and they stay there until about ten minutes into the match, then they go back at half time, then loads of them stay there drinking and eating through much of the second half. In the end people will probably watch the game inside such places on big TVs.

Any other season, I'd think we were numpties by talking about winning the league, but this season, it's so wide open, you'd have to think we've an outside chance. I wouldn't write us off completely. I reckon if we are looking good in December, FSG may strengthen us further.

I'd like to think so, mate. However, we've only played one tough game so far, at home. I wouldn't be counting any chickens yet. But at least we're beating the easy teams. That's a huge leap forward for us.

Apart from Southampton.

Southampton may be low down in our mental pecking-order of clubs, but the fact is they are currently fourth in the table and deservedly so. Pochettino has done a fantastic job so far.
For sure - They are a very good team. I'm massively impressed with what he has done there. Likewise for WBA.

I agree with some of that. Were the match threads really 6 pages long when we had some good results some years back?

Perhaps not but one thing that I don't think has been mentioned in the context of this discussion is that the site has lost quite a high proportion of it's big contributors. And a fair few seem to post less than they used to (in some cases probably as a direct consequence of the previous point).

I'm not worried about the big games. They've not been an issue for us to be fair. Whenever we lose, it's by a hair. Frequently we should have won.
