I ask this as there have been a few articles over Dirk Kuyt... Former Liverpool Legend scores a hat trick..

Don't get me wrong I loved Dirk.. but club legend no.

So what is it that defines a player as a Legend..? Do we have any in the current squad..?

For me it's someone who gets the club and has won honours or helped win honours with club or has been part of the club ethos for a long time...

After his Liverpool career is over... he is involved with the club somewhat, either directly or as a supporter

In recent times

JC - Legend
SG - Legend
Xabi Alonso - Legend
Hyppia - Legend
Hamman - Legend
Dudek - (For instanbul heroics) Legend

I'm struggling after that...

Imo a legend is a player who made a significant contribution to the club and also helped the club win a few competitions.
Kuyt falls into the hero category along with Smicer.
Garcia is a candidate and so is Suarez.

Kuyt won a League Cup.
Garcia & Smicer won the Champions League
Suarez won zip

There are legends and there are cult heroes. Keegan, for example, is a legend, as is Sir Roger Hunt, Kenny, Souness, Gerrard, etc etc. Cult heroes include Joey Jones, Mad Erik and Titi Camara. I don't much care about the lists as, for the teams in the 60s, 70s and 80s, who do you leave out? There are loads in the former category. But it doesn't seem to mean much when most of them aren't even remembered by your average fan today. Look at that 'Players who shook the Kop' poll - McDermott, an incredible player, was way down the chart, whilst all kinds of idjits were high up. It's not worth expending any time and energy on.

Suarez did not stay long enough to be considered a legend.
I don't know, an exceptionally good player like Suarez is sort of a legend to me. No player since maybe Fowler during his younger years have "wow'ed" me like he did. I feel extremely privileged to have seen them both play live.

He would have been one of the clubs greats, but left too early imho.

Nah, time spent here isn't that important, it's what you do when you're here. Gary McAllister is surely a legend and he was barely here two years.

Was about to use him as an example but I wasn't sure if people considered him a legend.

I think we can all agree that there are different tiers of legends.
Also I think some confuse cult heroes with legends.

When we talk about legend we talk about people like Barnes, Dalglish, Souness, Hansen, Keegan, Rush, Emlyn Hughes, Beardsley. gkmacca you know the list more than I do. Gary Mac in no way could be amongst their class. Below that tier we have lesser legends from the Premiership era like Fowler, Didi Hamman, Molby, Alonso etc..

I know what you mean, but strictly speaking a legend is surely someone who inspires one or many great stories that are passed down from one generation to the next, and in that sense Gary Mac for his key role in that great season, like Davey Fairclough for THAT goal, has become a legend. I guess one could say that some legends are also 'greats,' but this is getting us into a veritable Newsnight Review of pickiness!
