What's the story, mourning Illori?

People should get banned for thread titles that is just a players name.

The Ilori signing doesn't look all that clever at the moment.

Particularly if he can't get a game for the reserves

It was a mistake signing him. They actually meant to sign that Welsh lad Llori. Now we're stuck with some foreign loser who can't even get a game in the reserves.

Thommo was in the first team by Ilori's age. I thought we were supposed to be getting more open to giving youth a chance.

Aye, cos what was de rigeour 30 years ago should be replicated nowadays.

Hold on til I put this fucking response in an envelope and post it to you while I'm at it.

You realise this is an exercise in futility don't you?

in the last 3 1/2 months ( i got bored of checking then) the U21s have played 7 games , 2 of which were friendlies, and it looks like he only played in 3 of them . Has he been injured ? Cause if not 3 games in 3 1/2 months isn't going to develop anyone .Is this really the best way to progress a player like him ?

21 next month.

But can we please keep a defender past the age of 23, I mean we were quick to get rid of Paletta and San José and they seem to be doing pretty well now.

What age was Flanagan when you wrote him off?

So - just to recap.

We signed an 18 year old Welsh defender who doesn't play for the reserves, whom Granda are making a TV series about based on a letter written by Ryan.

oops.. oh well, he's young and as Modo said, it sometimes takes time.

I think it does too - central defenders are rarely particularly good at age 20.

The worry is that by buying him at this stage of his development then plonking him in the reserves behind four established first team centre backs (I'm not even considering Coates or Wisdom in the equation) runs the risk that we stall his development and cost ourselves a nice wedge that could have been used more wisely in strengthening the first team.

I can only think a deal to sell Agger / Skrtel fell through. Otherwise the deal doesn't make much sense to me.

Yeah this is always a concern. It's a shame in a way because he's looked the part for the reserves - well above the standard of his team mates, and he looks like he could be moulded into that tall, commanding presence that reads the game well. Something we've lacked since Hyypia.

Aye Ross, but as you and I were told by the masses at the time: selling Agger for 20M last summer would have been a "terrible idea".

Thankfully we were schooled properly on that one.

I think we could see him enter the fold as early as next season, especially considering we will in all likelihood have at least some European matches. Varane and Nastasic are both 20 and are playing big roles at the moment for their clubs after all.

We'll never learn

I thought he hadn't played for the reserves ...
