Ferguson left a decaying side and knew it. That they won the title last year is testament to his ability to instill confidence in his side and fear in everyone else (including the media and authorities), however if City had've turned up they'd have been beaten to it.

He'd have done better than Moyes this season (could he really have done any worse) though no question.

As far as the WC is concerned, people didn't even bother to laugh when Budgie said a while ago that he thought we were in with a chance of winning the thing.
