RTE v BBC (During and After the Slovenia match)

Hansen: “Once England got the goal the confidence levels surged, they were excellent.â€
Eamon Dunphy: “They just didn’t grow in confidence at all after the goal.â€

Lineker: “The goal really settled them, didn’t it? They pushed on from there.â€
Ronnie Whelan: “You’d think they’d have kicked on from when they scored, but they actually got worse.â€

Roy: “England’s crossing has been absolutely outstanding.â€
Giles: “Some of the crossing was just awful.â€

Shearer: “Rooney looks more confident, he’s getting around the pitch a lot better.â€
Dunphy: “It’s shocking to see Rooney so subdued, he’s been reduced to a shivering wreck.â€

Shearer: “They look much more comfortable on the ball, they’re passing it with a purpose, with pace, they’re closing down – a much better performance, it’s encouraging.â€
Giles: “They’re much better than they have been, but they couldn’t have been worse.â€

No arguments, then. Second half. England held on. Full-time. Ready?

Lee Dixon: “A great performance.â€
Dunphy: “Shocking . . . absolutely incredibly bad . . . pretty awful stuff.â€

Hansen: “The commitment was there, the spirit was there, the enterprise was there, the creativity was there, they passed it better – they could have scored five or six quite easily. Capello will obviously be delighted with the performance.â€
Giles: “If that’s the shackles off what’ll they be like when the shackles are back on?â€

’Arry Redknapp: “We played with pace, we got after them, we pressed them, there wasn’t a weakness in the team.â€
Dunphy: “They were astonishingly poor.â€

Lineker: “He looked more like the Rooney we know.â€
Ronnie: “Rooney is a major worry, his form, his body language, his demeanour, everything.â€

Dixon: “Gerrard was outstanding.â€
Dunphy: “I can’t believe how bad Gerrard was today.â€

’Arry: “Across midfield we were top drawer.â€
Giles: “Barry got worse as the game went on, Milner, Gerrard and Lampard the same.â€

’Arry: “Bring it on! Whoever we play we’ll be difficult to beat.â€
Ronnie: “If they don’t improve they’ll go straight out, it was a very, very inept performance.â€

And heres a couple of jokes to round it off:

The England Football Team were visiting an orphanage in Cape Town this week... "It was heartbreaking to see their sad little faces with no hope in their eyes," ....said Jamal, aged 6.

South African Police admit having problems with drug dealers, thieves and sex fiends during the World Cup. They say things should improve when John Terry’s family go home.

Rob Green has trained today and in 3 hours he had 4,000 shots fired at him and did not concede a single goal. Tomorrow, he and Heskey will train with the rest of the squad

The beeb did go a bit ott with their praise - if anything they shouldve been more critical at the team not converting those chances as it'll cost you against a half decent side.

Likewise though I think the bias in rte's overly critical view of the game shone through fairly easily there.

Its not biased against england, they've been equally as critical against other countries! Rtes critical view is closer to the truth than bbcs though!

Saying Gerrard was awful is clearly absolute bollocks. SG had a great game.

I said 'closer' to the truth! 😉 He played ok.....but positionally he didnt spend most of his time on the left, where he was meant to be!

What a bunch of dicks. Makes you wonder if they were just watching the USA game again and not realised.

I cant think of any other player consistantly crossing as well as Milner in any other game. SG and Rooneys interplay was good (Rooney only missing out on a deserved goal by a finger tip save). They've not idea what they were on about.

Dunphy is clearly an idiot..

however.. England were shit in the second half.. I thought in the second half Gerrard was tiring and most of the squad looked fucked in the last 10 minutes. England dominated in the first half and still pretty much controlled the game but to say they were excellent is tripe.

good result.. some good performences but nothing spectacular

From those comments, the Irish are probably watching something else. Wonder what they had to say about the French and Italians?

Exactly the same. I think when you are not involved its easier to give a more realistic opinion. It might not be what you want to hear but basically its the sames as criticising the BBC and Sky for so called anti Liverpool bias

Anybody who concludes that, Gerrard played awfully, after watching that game is clearly biased.

Gerrard had a very good game. He should have scored when he got the chance. Gerrard and Milner were pretty central to England's victory.

Although whatever happened to Gerrard's thumping drives? It's not just because of the new jabathehut ball, he hardly attempted any for Liverpool last season. Is he carrying some sort of injury?

As always, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Stevie hasnt done that for England in a competitive game for a very long time, he plays a different game in the international shirt. To his detriment IMO.

The same as anyone else would have to say! They were both rubbish and deserve to not get past the group stages! The fact that Italy came out of our qualification group and the french came through a playoff with us has no bearing on being critical towards their performance or lack thereof!

they always have something shit to say about gerrard.

i remember giles saying gerrard wasn't world class just a 'high impact player' after one of the champions league matches.

what does that even mean you grumpy fucker

Unless England's manager - whoever he may be - has the courage to bench Lampard and give Stevie free rein from CM, that'll continue.

Since alonso left giles has been more of a gerrard fan, albeit for the 10 seconds we were in the CL last season! Giles has his his tongue so far up alonso's hole that I reckon there must be some child illegitimacy afoot!!
