Chelsea are considering switching their attentions to signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, 24, if the Germany international indicates a willingness to move. (ESPN)

Other sources suggest that the release clause has been triggered. Only item to work out is installments of the €60m.

Werner may stall for time hoping that we match the bid, otherwise will be Chelsea bound.

Mbappé or Havertz then.

Weird that we have just turned away from Werner completely. Ah well, always trust Klopp.

I hope there's a plan B, else Afcon time is gonna be fun with Bobby, origi and the ox leading the line.

We should be getting Werner. He looks like he has fucking 'star' written all over him ... if we don't have someone 'bigger' lined up, then I feel we're again pining our hopes on our great manager and current squad ... I guess it worked for #19, let's make it work for #20 too.

Dembele's injury record makes Sturridge look like Wolverine. I'd stay away.

This Werner story is a bummer.

I think we're making a major mistake if we don't spend money this summer. Covid will create financial problems of course, but we're in a unique position of consolidating our position as the best team in England and a top 3 club in Europe for the next 5 years if we make the right moves now. Fuck that up, and our window of opportunity for winning trophies gets reduced to another 2 years tops. The present squad will start declining in performance by around 2022.

I could get if Covid had made the transfer market completely unviable for everyone, but if the likes of Inter and Chelsea are willing to cough up 50 million this early, there's no reason why we can't either.

Chelsea will be backed by Abramovich
City will be backed by Sheik Mansour

FSG will tell Klopp, balance the books. By the looks of things.

We run the risk of letting the squad get too old.

I am seriously gutted about this news.

Agreed, I think we definetly need to make some major additions to the squad to keep challenging. Will be interesting to see who we are linked with now.

It is understandable though - owner bankrolled clubs can afford to splash the cash even in this climate. We can't with revenues severely curtained, and salary expenditure remaining as high as ever. FSG are not spending their own money for transfers. That's just how it is.

I expect that you'll see us look for loan deals or free transfers or signing somebody young in the 20 million range.

Major transfer plans just get shelved till 2021 I reckon.

Yeah... it is bad news.... especially seeing as they didn't make a splash financially last year after winning the CL...

I realise that Corona is a big deal but...

Let's just hope Werner holds his nerve and Chelsea fail to make the champs league as well.

I understand things are difficult but we spent nothing last year. Surely we have some money to spend.

By all accounts Werner was a long term target. Seems strange to let him go to a rival.

Given the likely reduction in gate receipts over the next fuck knows how long, you can understand the club treading carefully.

I am not too worried about losing out on Werner. I agree that not spending this summer will hurt us big time especially since we did not spend that much last year after winning the champions league. I don't think we will need to wait till 2022. We had started seeing the effect - FA cup exit, CL exit before the break. I think our league + Cl campaign will suffer next season if we don't have a decent backup or two for our front three.

If we are not able to pay 50-60 million pus wages on established players, I hope we spend on some young upcoming talent at least. Maybe someone with the profile of Sarr from Europe.
