Wernot gonna get him

From one plastic club to the next. At least he won‘t have issues with a noisy stadium there.

His wage demands are ridiculous. No way we were ever gonna cave to those.
I though he'd agreed to £140k a week for us.. Chelsea have been touted from between £170k-£200k a week depending on what you read.

I don't blame him if he goes there in all honesty. We've low balled (like we did with Salah and Willian) and Leipzig quite rightly have said pay up or shut up.

Someone else offers you a pay rise of that magnitude. You aren't going to say no, so I dont blame Werner. Even now, he may be hoping we put an 11th hour bid in.

Chelsea will be backed by Abramovich
City will be backed by Sheik Mansour

FSG will tell Klopp, balance the books. By the looks of things.

We run the risk of letting the squad get too old.

I am seriously gutted about this news.

We've spent fuck all under Henry, last two signings funded by selling Coutinho, and nothing since then apart from Minamoto or whatever the fuck he's called.

Embarrassing really

I love to quote the story of what happened when Chelsea tried to sign Kaka from AC Milan to show how the transfer market really works...

Chelsea had put in an offer of between £76.6m - £79.3m for Kaka
Real had tabled and offer of between £49.5m - £56.7m
Kaka chose Real...

All what I read reported was that “Liverpool will not rival Chelsea in the battle for Timo Werner's signature as the 24-year-old RB Leipzig and Germany striker”, which I take as meaning that they (LFC) will not be drawn into a bidding war with Chelsea for Timo Werner...

If Klopp does want Timo Werner, and has approached the club, agent or striker then who is to say that he (Werner); will not do a Kaka and sign for his preferred team Liverpool

There was a fair outlay in their first summer and we weren't raising much in terms of CL money until 6-7 years into their time as owners so we can't have been making a lot then. Salah, Mane, Chambelain and Wijnaldum cost what was a decent chunk until PSG fucked the entire market. After selling Coutinho essentially covered VVD and Allison there was still the guts of 90 million spent on Fabinho and Keita that summer. We've not been like City or Chelsea but they haven't completely tightened the purse strings either.

Clearly we've told him it's not happening , he's spoke publicly about us being his preference , weeks later he agrees terms with Chelsea

Disappointing if true. Would have really liked to bring him on. The price seems eminently reasonable, even post pandemic.

Normally - I'd be pissed off about this.

But before last season I said there was no way we were going to win the league after not signing a single player.

How wrong I was.

I shall trust in Klopp.

We better have wonderkids for every position. Or we are fooked.

Imagine January 2021 a strike force of Origi Firmino
Peed off about this. Our front three are superb but two of them are in their late twenties. Champions always strengthen, that's how winning runs start. We'd damn well better have another striker targetted.

How many top class strikers under 25 are there in that price range? Clearly we felt we could do better than £50m

It was mentioned a few times Salah was recommended as a better option than Brandt when Klopp was interested in the latter. Hopefully we have a 'better' option in our list and are not hindered by financial constraints.

And we were turned down by Gotze before we moved onto Mane. So hopefully we have a similar story here.

I have to admit I'm really surprised, especially as this dragged on for what feels like several months of strong rumors.

If we don't sign anyone I think we risk being in limbo next season especially with the AFCON.

Minamino has to be the reason Klopp is staying firm, but it's damn risky

Fucking hell. Not liking this, but he's not the only striker in the world. Plenty of talented players we can buy out there.

Talented and proven are two different things entirely. There are very very few desirable and proven, and playing in one of the top 5 leagues, that are worthy, or even possible, of consideration. Werner was one. Hopefully we are just playing it calm.

Yep agree 100%. Champions should have at least 1 marquee signing each year to freshen up the squad and keep players on their toes.

And although our front 3 are in their prime (I think they are all 29 now?), we should have one eye on the future.

I agree, but if a player's attitude about joining LFC is "I can take it or leave it", especially when we're the reigning European Champs and potential League winners then, maybe he wasn't the right guy after all. Let him join Chelsea and be berated by the press for taking young Tammy's place.

Is that his attitude though? I imagine he has only agreed to join Chelsea because Liverpool have said they can't afford him.

That's hardly the point though. Klopp must be convinced of his attitude and it now seems to be all about the price. We need him (as we have little quality backup for any of our front three and he would help enormously with that) more than he needs us it seems.

I'm not arsed about losing out on Werner, but I do have real concerns that we're going full spurs. Even though the club will be buzzing, you can imagine that not spending a fucking dime for 3yrs might weigh on the minds of a few of our big players, if the club isn't showing any intent to stay at the top. Hopefully we're all wrong, it's under control, they have remembered about afcon and no LB cover.

I thought it was about the pay and the chances to start?

FSG have proven their willingness to go a very long way in backing Klopp and the club. Perhaps what might have happened here was that Edwards and his team settled on a valuation, Leipzig wouldn't accept it and Klopp asked for permission to go a bit above it but FSG said no. If so, I'm OK with that given our record on transfers lately.

It ain't over till it's over though. Look at the shenanigans surrounding the Virgil transfer before we got that over the line. Watch this space.
