I wrote out a thread this morning about how important the next two games are for our season, I argued that they're games that define us and our weaknesses as a squad, and seemingly a club, and have done for as long as I remember. Well, I decided our fragility was a more interesting topic of debate than another theoretical we need to beat x thread, so this is version two.
Put bluntly, we're a squad, and a club, of shithouses, and have been for as long as I can remember, we cannot cope with the burden of expectation, it causes us to crumble into dust. It runs through the club, it stretches from the squad who're full of players who are reactive rather than proactive, who can only up their game if the situation is backs against the wall, and hide in their shells once a team starts putting up a fight, to the fans who start shitting themselves as soon as Bolasie has one foray into our half (myself included).
Its no surprise that our biggest and best performances always come against the supposed bigger teams, or when we have already gone a few goals down and our players finally start playing with the freedom they should have played with from the first whistle.
Its one of the first things Klopp recognised when he arrived, he mentioned the fact that we need to change from doubters to believers, and he's completely right, I go into so many of these winnable games dreading the game because I know exactly what'll happen, there wont be any arrogance or belief, there won't be any urgency, and no one will try and take control of the game, either the opposition will play shite and we'll get some points, or the opposition will catch onto the fact that we don't fully believe in ourselves, and they'll out work us, out play us, and beat us.
The two games coming up are classic Liverpool fuck up games, an away game against a hard working Watford team who've flown a little under the rader thanks to Leicester, but are very effective, believe in themselves, and have a very good striking pair. Then a home game against the current masters of counter attacking football, a team who will comfortably soak up our pressure, and will then inevitably destroy us on the counter.
We aren't going to win those games if we approach them the same way we usually approach these games, the kind of expecting to win, but not willing to make it happen mentality, the wait and it'll eventually happen mindset.
The only way we'll win these games, and ever get back into the top four is if we go out there and fucking work for it, believe its our right and start destroying squads who are clearly inferior to ours.
Its your biggest challenge Jurgen, I know it cant happen over night, and I'm encouraged by the signs I'm already seeing, but the sooner we start playing with belief and conviction, the sooner we get back into the top four.
