WELCOME Takumi Minamino

Jürgen Klopp expects 'proper team player' Takumi Minamino to make a seamless transition to life at Liverpool after sealing his move from Red Bull Salzburg.

The Japan international will join the Reds on January 1, 2020 having completed a medical and signed a long-term contract with the European champions on Wednesday.
He will arrive at Anfield having won the Austrian title every year since he moved to Salzburg in 2015, scored 64 goals in 199 appearances, and caught the eye of the continent with his performances in this season’s Champions League – including a strike against Klopp’s team.
And the Liverpool manager believes Minamino’s development at Salzburg, where Naby Keita and Sadio Mane also had spells earlier in their careers, makes him well-tuned to the requirements for the Reds.

“This is fabulous news – a wonderful signing. We are really, really happy about this,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.
“Our supporters have had the chance to see him close up recently so I don’t need to sing too loudly about his qualities as they are already known.
“Takumi is a very quick, very clever player, he finds space between the lines. He is brave with the ball but also brave without the ball – a proper team player. He makes the best of himself for the benefit of others.
“His Champions League experience is a big bonus and coming from the club and organisation he does, we know he’ll be well coached, used to an elite environment and had all the right experiences.
“It is fantastic work by our football operations team in how they’ve handled this transfer. Michael Edwards and the team deserve a lot of credit.
“It’s not hard to see why Salzburg is a favoured destination for players with real talent and hunger. From our experiences dealing with, and facing, Salzburg on and off the pitch in recent months, their reputation as a benchmark modern European club will only grow.
“I’m sure all the Liverpool supporters will go out of their way to make Takumi feel at home in our amazing city and club.
“I am also pretty sure as of now we have added to our numbers of the LFC family in Japan specifically. For those who follow us now because we have one of the country’s most exciting talents, I say welcome – it’s a special club to be part of.”

Excited about this signing. It just ticks so many boxes and we're in a no-lose situation. Even fans of our rivals can find nothing wrong with this deal. He caught the eye of the fans in our first match against us and then raised his game further in the return leg. His goal against us reminded me of Lallana's winner against Norwich - struck hard into the ground giving the keeper no chance at all, and it's strange in a way, because Minamino is effectively Lallana's replacement in this winning machine Klopp has created. A clear and definite upgrade who certainly has the potential to contribute many goals and assists for this club.

I don't know how long Klopp will give him as an adjustment period, but to my untrained eye, his former club played a similar style to us, so I'm optimistic he can leave an impression with us before the end of the season. Brilliant work from Edwards and Klopp. Again.

Anyone think we might see this line up against teams who will low block / park the bus

—————Alisson—————
TAA—C.Bk—VVD—Robbo
—————-Fabs—————-
—Minamino——Keita——
Salah——Bobby——Mane

i haven’t seen enough of him to know if he can play that AM role in a midfield three but his style there would be epic if he could

We are such an international team now, probably we will have the best that Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and some of the best that South America can offer. We just need a North American from somewhere !!! then the circle is complete.

If Minamino plays alongside the regular front 3, I would expect it to be in a 4-2-3-1. So Keita (or Gini or another midfielder) would have to drop back to help Fabs; this way the 4 attackers can take more risks.

And... who is C.Bk? 🙂

What Im excited about Mina is that he should slot into our team easily and bring with him a decent skillset. He can play in that classic 4-4-3 or 4-2-3-1. He looks like he has the pace and speed of mind to zip around and cause mayhem. People liking him to lallanna is a bit weak, IMHO I think he is a superior player, his speed of mind and body is an asset. Lallana was very good in tight situations in his prime but lacked pace to be a true constant 1-1 threat. Mina electric pace will be unsettling for opposition defenders.

That'll be the owners

Would love to see a paddy in the 1st team ‍♂️

You have a point - the power behind LFC is American, assembling all their colonies together in that team of ours.

@Shay_K - are paddy's not European ? am I missing something ? - the white race is represented well in our team,

  • Henderson,
  • Milner
  • Robbo
  • Lovren
  • Adrian
Partial Whites:
  • Most of Alisson
  • Most of Shaq
  • Half of Ox

Jaysus, Moron, where to start? He isn't talking about ethnicity, he's talking about nationality. Like for instance, I'd love LFC to have someone from Northern Ireland in the LFC team, and one of the few I could see fitting in would be young Jamal Lewis (Norwich LB who would be an interesting understudy to Robbo). He is of mixed heritage, but that's not the point.

Always love seeing your trips and photos, I want to go to Japan in the next year or two, I'll probably just copy your journey but take very bad photos instead!
Hahaha ! Thanks mate. You really should go - most people love every minute, the people, the cleanliness, the efficiency and to top it all outrageously good food and scenery. Hotel rooms are definitely on the very small side though (but usually really well designed and fitted out).

Tokyo, Lakes area (Mt Fuji - close to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara makes a really nice trip with little time lost to travel (½ day between Tokyo and Osaka. Kyoto is 45 mins from Osaka). Limit time in Tokyo (3 days?) and Osaka (1 night) and Nara is just a day trip from Kyoto/Osaka or an over-nighter if you prefer, all nice cities but the other areas are the real gems.

I can't wait to go back and explore more (luckily just 2.5 hrs flying time from Shanghai - so you could combine the two) !

That is a really exciting line-up. Can't wait to see it. And yes AM, according to WhoScored, is one of his most frequented positions.

I'm not sure they'll allow us to just add him to our usual XI. It usually works by him having to replace someone.

Hahahaha - this made me spit out my morning coffee all over my keyboard. Damn you Moron.

Adding this here (from another thread) for clarity :

Japanese website : A midfielder who can also play as a forward.
Sky analysis : Minamino has primarily started as a central attacking midfielder or winger for Salzburg this season but can also play as a wide midfielder.
Totalfootballanalysis : His diminutive frame and low centre of gravity provides him an advantage, allowing him to run past players with ease. The attacking midfield role is one of the most important positions, especially when played in a narrow formation such as a 4-1-2-1-2. Minamino is solely responsible for making sure the attacks flow and the strikers are not starved of service whilst providing an attacking threat.

Squawka : According to analytics experts smarterscout, Minamino’s profile is similar to that of Adam Lallana in 2016/17.
You couldn’t say Minamino is a player who’s been pigeonholed. According to smarterscout, he’s clocked up over an hour’s worth of game-time in no fewer than six different positions this season so far:
Minamino in the Austrian Bundesliga:
RM/RWB:
356 minutes
CAM/SS: 72
CM: 148
LM/LWB: 134
LW: 82
CF/ST: 61

However last season he played nearly 1,100 mins as CAM and so far this season 347 mins as CAM in the CL alone (72 as RM or RWB and 47 as CM).

Smarterscout :
For anyone trying to mentally visualise Minamino’s style of play, the ‘similar players’ search function on smarterscout paints something of a picture.
Minamino’s attacking output in Austria’s top flight ranges from an 87 at RM to an 89 at CAM/SS in the Champions League in 2019/20. Like all smarterscout ratings, those numbers are based on a scale of 0 to 99 and, in Minamino’s case, they represent quite a jump from last season.
“In the previous two seasons, he played mostly CAM/SS, with average at best attacking [output] for the Premier League,” smarterscout add, “and a style similar to Lallana (in 2016/17) and Roberto Firmino (when used at CAM last season).”
Widening the filter to include players of other major leagues across Europe throws up an interesting name: Nabil Fekir, who Liverpool famously came a failed medical away from signing after the 2017/18 season.

He's a very versatile player who can player in any one of 4 or 5 positions, but he's made his name at AM.

If Minamino plays alongside the regular front 3, I would expect it to be in a 4-2-3-1. So Keita (or Gini or another midfielder) would have to drop back to help Fabs; this way the 4 attackers can take more risks.

Which ever centre back is fit to join Virg

My main takeaway from Japanese hotels is the toilet ... heated seat was lovely, but there was this button that, when pushed, caused warm soapy water to be shot right up my hole. Had to call reception to peel me off the ceiling after I pressed that one to see what it did.

Did you try onsen (public bath) there? That must have been quite a culture shock too.

I’m addicted to the water up me hole routine. You can actually buy that ‘washlet’ part of the bog (comes with the warm seat) at any large electronic store. Next time you come, buy it and take it home with you. Should shock every house guest!
