Wages v turnover and shit...

Dantes, what ultimately determines what we have to pay a player is what they can get elsewhere. So the key thing to look at for determining a 'reasonable' level of wage inflation is overall income rises of our rivals, so things like TV money, matchday revenue, commercial deals etc. That's why, contrary to your theory, Man Utd have been able to not only avoid a rising wages/turnover ratio, but actually keep lowering it, because they've been able to increase their revenues at a faster pace than their rivals.

To be fair to Rosco, he has banging this drum for well over 12 months

It's at least two years, but it's not unusual for people to realise two years later that I was right all along.

And you have to be a bit daft to believe the wage bill doesn't affect how much we can spend on transfers. Although Rafas alleged surprise at this notion is probably where people get the idea it doesn't .

But I'm pretty sure it's not the percentage increase in our income that determines wage rises, but the absolute increase.

IMO: you're right that it's got nothing to do with percentages, but it really hasn't got much to with rises in *our* income - it's the rises in the alternative employers' income (or, in Chelsea's and Man City's cases, budgets) that matters. Without alternative employers players really don't have a lot of power to bid up wages. You can see this must be true by noting that, as I said, players haven't been able to take a proportion of Man Utd's rising income just because they want it; there has to be some power, namely for a Rooney to point at the £250k a week City are offering and threaten to leave if they don't match it.

Chelsea or Man City's budget excluded, the lion's share of money in football in general goes to the footballer's wages. So it's not unreasonable to say that wage demand is a function of (club-revenue - operating expense excluding wages)...

In the absence of super rich owners clubs use every available $ after meeting operating expenses to attract top talent so they can increase future revenue. It doesn't matter if the money is spent in the form of transfer fee or as player wages, eventually the money is spent on players anyway.

The problem isn't with the amount. The thing is we thought we bought a Ferrari and we're driving a Sunshine bus.

So Voronin, Degen, Jovanovic, Dossena, Aquilani etc had nothing to do with Rafa getting in the absolute wrong players and increasing our wage bill?? His yearly free transfer signing was shocking.

And when Rafa left we were not in the CL anymore either.

I suppose there's 2 issues there.

The first being that wage costs are substantially higher for teams in the CL. Whether that's to do with a higher quality of player or players knowing a CL club will have more money in the pot and then asking for it is debatable.

The big problem with all our shit signings was that they were shit - but that they were too expensive. We weren't likely to be able to get better players on cheaper wages - probably.

You would of thought that half these cunts should have had wage reduction clauses in their contract for not reaching the CL.

Besides its not just Rafa - Roy & Kenny continued the tradition of picking muppets to offer big salaries to.

We all forget that owners set the targets, managers have to achieve them. I think all of our owners have been wrong for three years now and the managers have made the situation worse by trying to live up to owners expectations.

I still hate Rafa though

Aren't Carroll and Henderson are on triple the wages they were on at Newcastle and Sunderland respectively, and Downing on twice as much from what he was on at Villa? 🙁

I actually believe that part of the problem was caused by the expectations of us supporters and the fear factor of the owners by not making us happy.

1) The signing of Carroll was a bad decision but was forced upon the club by first Torres's late transfer request, and then the new owners worried about keeping us all happy and therefore a big replacement signing had to be done quickly.

2) We all know that they probably did not plan to actually give Kenny the reigns but they did based on him doing well after taking over from Hodgeson, and then owners feeling they would need to give him the role, when actually they would have gone for someone like BR earlier.

3) Kenny's signings - not particularly the people he signed but the amounts payed were stupid. Its really fucked us up for the next 3-4 years with the only way to relieve the situation by getting into CL.

I don't actually think our current owners are fully to blame other than the fact that they should have been more ruthless and stuck to their plans rather than submitting partially to mob rule.

Do you know what i love?
Not giving a fuck about all this pish.

Sometimes i think 'Oh the budget' 'Oh the wage structure'
And then i catch myself on and remember that in actuality i couldnt fucking care less, i just watch whatever shite the overpaid drivel we ended up with serve up and hope it doesnt make me throw up in my mouth.

Larry

I think it is true becuase I suspect they all shit themselves as to what kind of message it sends out by the new owners to sell your star player to a rival club, and then not have a replacement in. Hence it was just rushed. Besides we will never know how the fans would have reacted had we not got some sort of replacement for Torres. I can say I would have been pretty pissed if we did not sign someone - was a shock to sign someone for that money whom I had never heard of or was not deemed world class.

MORON
