Unfulfilled Potential

VICENTE from Valencia CF is another player.

2002 to 2004 he was a brilliant player for Valencia, the best left winger going around in football.

Had it all - pace, technique, skill ....

Then along came Ranieri who restricted Vicente's game, and on top of that some serious knee/ankle injuries, and since 2004 has never regained that level he had reached.

Matt Le Tiss?
Could have played for a top team if he left Southampton

Certainly, but probably not for very long. He knew he wouldn't be happy elsewhere and therefore IMO made the right decision.

Agree with that - made the right decision JJ. But, he could have been mentioned in the same breath as the great players of his generation if he'd been with us or the mancs or Arsenal etc. He could have played anywhere and if he'd had the mental strength to play with one of the top teams he'd have looked an awsome player. He remains one of the most absurdly talented players I've ever seen and his one touch control makes Berbatov look wooden.

Speaking of Recoba, I'd also add Guti.

Spent many years as a squad player, but had the talent to be so much more.

For me it was Pablo Aimar... I was pretty excited that we were linked to him back when Rafa was here.

I really thought he would have made the move to Real or Barca, but he just disappeared after moving on from Valencia.

Oh... and a shout out for Vegard Heggem too. Poor lad had the worst luck with injuries...

What about Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci? Showed great promise, had a great world cup in 1990 (he broke my heart when his goal knocked the republic out in the quarter finals) then suffered a lot from injuries before going to Japan for some reason.

You just have to laugh at some of his goals. Unbelievable. Criminal how he never played for a top side (where he would have been recognized as one of the world's best, throughout the world).

I'm sure the offers would have been there, and probably of a 'name your price' nature, but I just don't think he was interested in moving. Fair play to him.

He was probably my favourite ever non-Liverpool player. Even if we lost it was worth watching Match of the Day because chances are you'd see a great goal from Le Tissier. The goal of the month competitions were pretty much just him!

Gerrard must top this list.

He should have a right old haul of medals by now. I'm gutted that its very likely he'll never lift a title

I don't believed a lack of trophies automatically means 'unfulfilled potential'.

Surely we're talking about players who didn't develop into the footballers they could have been? The size of their trophy haul isn't the best indicator.

Agreed.

Thanks for the clib Junior - a truly special player. He was certainly my favourite ever non-Liverpool player; just a genius.

That last goal of the clip - I remember watching that at the time. Defied physics that he managed to get such power on the shot.

Actually, it was hard not to think of Stevie with a number of the strikes.

I always thought that Steve Harper could have been a regular for England if he had moved away from Newcastle. Instead he contented himself with sitting on the bench waiting for Given to get injured and it dulled his game somewhat.
