Trent, Salah and VVD

i hate this thread, how’s it mid november with no progress? i just hope if any/all of them are going it doesn’t derail the second half of the season

Where the fuck are Mo's and Virg's contract renewals, Hughes and Edwards, you pair of fucking gimps. Bunch of absolute mongs that are so far disconnected with the fans and oblivious to where the success of this team lies. Clowns. Fuck them off and bring back Jorg.

Most of people's ire and frustration seems to be targeted at Tent but I can't help but think that with his contract and also Virgil's and Mo's, the club is far from blameless.
With two year's to go on all their contracts, we had Klopps's German pal running the show from his Ibiza party gaff.
This was the time where it would be expected that all three contract's would be looked at but either he hadn't got the capacity or the authority to do so.
So were the club complacent with Trent's contract, relying on his loyalty to to get a contract done quickly when the club was ready to do so.
I cannot imagine Real would be as interested if there was three years left on this contract and we were looking for £100m plus.
Personally, I don't see why Trent should kop all the flack for running down his contract when the club didn't appear to be in a hurry to renew it in the first place.

Just to say, because it may not be obvious, that the delays in the process are all around the haggling with the agents. Once there's a breakthrough in those negotiations, the paperwork is typically done in a day or two. So the delay here is basically Hughes/Edwards and the agents, both negotiating hard. But if they agree a deal on New Year's Eve it can all be drafted and signed in a matter of hours if absolutely necessary (and this is typically how it happens, which is why there was a typo in the Suarez transfer agreement with Barca which leaked).

what was the spelling mistake? google didn’t help me

If a player like TAA - a ~100M asset - refuses to entertain contract negotiations at the 2 year / 18 month mark, the club should probably look to sell to ensure a fee is received.

It does feel a little on the incompetent side, yeah, that we've basically gone "oh, well, we've had other stuff to worry about and we have tried..".
I don't see it like that at all.

If he has said that then more than likely the club have just continued their efforts to get him to re-sign, we've seen this before (Stevie for example) where the club hasn't given up.

Personally though I really don't give a shit. He was ace when he played as an attacking full back and put cross after cross on a plate but he hasn't been that for a couple of seasons and I don't see him ever being that again. This season? 11 PL starts, one assist and zero goals. Last season was his worst since 2017/18 (with fewer games played but even then he may not have reached the previous low even with the same games played) with 3 goals and 4 assists (and in the CL since 2017-18 to date, 58 games, he's got a grand total of 4 goals and 1 assist).

So has this new style/midfield venture proved successful in other ways? Well we'd need @King Binny to tell us if other contributions have made up for the loss in GA but his passing hasn't been all that and I doubt our new found defensive strength is down to him. Additionally Slot's style certainly isn't all in on permitting TAA to attempt long passes all over the field.

In other words will he be difficult to replace? I don't think so. If we are going to lose any senior player I'd choose TAA over any other. We may have to pay £40-50m for a high quality RB, who may actually strengthen our defence and enable Konate and the midfield a respite from covering for him, but that's easily within reach if we re-sign VvD and Mo.

More than anything, I don't really understand with why the VVD deal hasn't been done yet. As far as I'm concerned, we ask him what he wants and then we give it to him with a firm handshake.
same, 0/3 at this stage is very surprising

Oh and I see a few people throwing around the £100m (€120m) asset. As if ANYONE would pay that for TAA.

Most expensive FB transfers:

Hakimi - Inter to PSG - 2021 - €68m
Cancelo - Juve to City - 2019 - €65m
White - Brighton to Arse - 2021 - €59m

Nothing above €40m since then.

Also, Ian Graham, said the data nerds at Liverpool saw the return on investment in wages (for LFC proven players) is much higher than the return on investment in transfers. So paying Trent 2 years wages rather than sell him & raise £50-100M to reinvest in transfers may well make financial sense

It’s just a crap source: when orenstein and others close to the source declare it I’ll believe it

I hope it's not true - no team in the world should have their RB be the highest earner at the club. It's just plain and simple wrong.

Am I the only one who is completely unmoved by this? Trent has won everything with Liverpool and if he wants to move on I wish him luck. I don't necessarily see it as incompetence from the club "allowing" him to run down his contract either. If Trent doesn't want to sign a reasonable offer then he doesn't want to sign.

It would be a sign of incompetence if the club was lowballing or somehow forgot to make an offer, but that feels unlikely.
Since Torres, I see players as often long transactions. Never really been moved anyone who’s left since. Also in most cases wouldn’t begrudge a player wanting a change but Trent would be extremely annoying more than anyone else being a scouser and length of time he’s been there though.

Lose a 80-100m asset or pay him 100-120m to stay for the next 5 years.

Is he worth the package though?

Nonsense.
It is what a player is worth to the team on stats. This isn’t 1950s footy to judge on such metric alone.
Stats, age, scouser, leadership and marketabilit, other available options and Unique selling point.

It’s more secure 20-25m a season to also secure value of current market value of 80-100m talent. We can always still sell him next season.
Sell to who though? It will have to be to someone Trent wants to join and can afford him. There is little chance of Madrid paying 80-100m for a player who had rejected them a year or two prior.

Ultimately, he will want a long and lucrative contract which we will have to honour with no guarantee of ever selling him.

So back to the question, is he worth the contract.

Because worst case scenario, we sell him in 2 years for more than we would have got this Jan for him
