Benitez tried to do something similar when we went for Keane and Barry

He chose.... poorly.

Milner's quality.

He is, I can't understand why he's so underrated around most parts. He's a clever, no-nonsense player and very effective. He'd be a really good signing for us, even more so for Arsenal because he's exactly the sort of player and attitude they lack.

He's a bit one paced and not overly technical... I think that's why hes considered no nonsense perhaps 😉

I'm not a big fan to be honest... nonetheless its not on the same level of dislike as the last English wing player we bought...

Milner's a terrific professional - sort of a midfield version of Kuyt, but with better technical ability.

That said, he's 28, would cost a bit, and would command huge wages - I'm not really in favour of signing someone in that age and wage bracket unless he adds something really special to the team - and he doesn't.

[article=http://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/lovren-aware-liverpool-link#ZjKPhKZD81MFw5e1.99]Southampton defender Dejan Lovren will not attempt to engineer a move to Liverpool amid reported interest from the Merseyside club.

The Croatia international has emerged as one the most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has reportedly taken note of his eye-catching displays.

Lovren is thought to be in demand from other top-flight clubs and, although the 24-year-old is not actively seeking a move, he is not ruling out a switch from St Mary's ahead of next season.

He told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti: "I have heard about the speculation as well, that is I read about the Liverpool interest in a newspaper,

"That is all I know so far. I feel great at Southampton and I have three years left on my contract, meaning the club will decide on my future."

Lovren joined the south-coast club from Lyon on a four-year deal last June and made 31 appearances in the English top flight in his debut campaign.[/article]

Lovren is ace, Southampton will want a fortune for him though I'm sure. He's only been there a year and they will plan on losing at least 3-4 other players already.

Scouting report: Four playmakers who could bolster Liverpool next season
Southampton star Lallana is Reds' top target - but what other options are out there?

Adam Lallana remains Liverpool’s top summer target but he is by no means the only playmaker who could add to the Reds’ attacking options next season.
There are alternative options for Brendan Rodgers - plenty of them.
A whole host of forward-thinking midfielders or attackers have been linked with the Reds over recent months.
The ECHO has taken a closer look at four of the best.
Dani Parejo (Valencia)

The 25-year-old Spaniard has been the standout player in Valencia’s midfield this season, even scoring in a 3-2 win over Barcelona at the Nou Camp in February.
He bagged four goals and five assists from 28 La Liga starts last season and averaged 64 passes per game, at a tidy accuracy rate of 87.7%.
He is a versatile midfield man, capable of playing in the holding role occupied by Steven Gerrard or further forward. Parejo would provide valuable cover for Gerrard and also the likes of Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen. But he would cost in the region of £20m, which is a high price to play for a man who might not be a regular starter.

Roberto Firmino (Hoffenheim)

The Brazilian, 22, signed a new four-year deal with Hoffenheim in March but speculation continues about his future.
Like Lallana, Firmino makes things happen. He is less of a midfielder and more of a fast, creative attacker who can play in any of the forward positions, from the wing to up front.
His Bundesliga stats from this season reflect this - 16 goals and 11 assists from 33 matches. Firmino is famed for his dribbling ability and embarked on an average of 4.5 dribbles per game last season. He is rated in the £15m bracket and has most recently been linked to Chelsea.

Mateo Kovacic (Inter Milan)

The Croatian teenager’s name appeared regularly in the gossip columns this season, linked with a move to either Liverpool or Manchester United.
But Kovacic, 19, is under contract with Inter for a further five years and last month insisted he was happy at the San Siro, so the odds on a move to the Premier League would appear slim. Which is a shame, as Kovacic looks to be a real rising star.
Like Parejo, he is versatile. He can operate as a classic ‘number 10’, playing between the lines, or also in a flat midfield.
He was involved in 32 Serie A matches for Inter last season but started only 14, prompting rumours he was unsettled. He failed to hit the net but contributed four assists, averaging 34.4 passes per game at an accuracy rate of 89.8.

Ivan Rakitic (Sevilla)

Kovacic’s Croatian compatriot is one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. He would fit the bill perfectly at Anfield but, with Real Madrid circling, a move to Merseyside would be a real long shot.
After turning in a man of the match display in last week’s Europa League final, Rakitic was immediately asked by reporters whether he would be staying at Sevilla.
“Fifteen people have asked me this question already. Just let me enjoy my special day,” was his reply.
The 26-year-old is a composed, intelligent footballer. In 29 La Liga starts this season, he bagged 12 goals and 10 assists, while averaging 51.2 passes per game at an accuracy rate of 79.3%.

Is Milner not just a harder working version of Downing? Hat's not saying much. For the money he would cost (fee/wages) we could probably do better.

Firmino looks a decent value at £15m. 16 goals and 11 assists - surely worth a mention?
He's been mentioned a lot. Persistent links for the second half of the season, but now it appears those links are now to Chelsea

I'd be impressed if we got him

He wants regular games in the centre of midfield if the press are to be believed.

He played 12 times for city last season, I'm not sure we can offer him many more starts than that in the centre of midfield alone.

If he wants to be a regular starter then he will have to take a drop in the level of the club he is playing for. A mid-table team. If he wants to be in with a realistic chance of winning something then he needs to be prepared for fewer starts. Liverpool, United, Everton (at their current level) are teams that can give him more whilst still competing for trophies.
Spurs have so many midfielders, and have not yet appointed a new manager so there is a huge degree of uncertainty hanging over the playing staff, that they are not a viable option. We will certainly give him far more pitch-time than City, especially with CL involvement.

He could actually help the Mancs, if Evra is leaving. Will give them a good starter or quality depth there for at least a season. No Europe this season of course, but at least he'll offer them a temporary fix while they address areas of more urgent need. Will be able to pay him better as well.

Liverpool eyeing up summer move for impressive goal-scoring attacker

Reports have claimed Liverpool are keeping tabs on the availability of Swiss attacking midfielder Admir Mehmedi, according to the SportsDirectNews website.

The 23-year-old has just spent the season on loan with Bundesliga outfit Freiburg from Ukranian side Dynamo Kiev, and although it is believed that his loan club want to sign him permanently, there may still be a chance for Liverpool to hijack a deal.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to add to his squad this season and

Mehmedi has impressed with his performances in the Bundesliga.

A representative from one of the bookies was on TalkSport this a.m.saying we're second favourites to sign Cole. Appaz Monaco head the betting.
