Transfer Rumours 21/22

It depends who we sell.

However, as of right now I'd say we need another CB to go along with that. I just don't trust Matip or Gomez to stay fit for longer than 10 games in a season.

Potentially, but at the very least we have 4 CBS, so I don't think that's super urgent. Happily take a punt on a 35 year old with just to fill the 5th slot though.

Despite all the doom and gloom on here I remain optimistic we can challenge.

United will be stronger but with a full squad last year we would have been miles ahead of them, they still have a lot of catching up to do, Sancho will help with that for sure but that won't be enough to win them the league.

City didn't win by much last season (12 points and only then when United dropped points over the final few games, it could easily have been just 7 pts from a weakish United team) considering the advantage they had (our injury catastrophe and them remaining virtually injury free for most of the season). Would Kane suit their style of play? Will they sign Grealish and if they do then of course it relegates someone to the bench. Their squad has been amazing for 5 seasons. It didn't help them win the PL 5 times on the bounce. Still favourites though.

Chelsea have a really good squad (not great) and a really good (not great) manager. They'll be up there.

And then there's us. I feel our squad is coming together, we already have a superb first team and are only 2-3 players (midfielder, striker and FB) off a very fine squad able to challenge for both PL and CL.

It's going to be one of the best, closest, title races in years as clubs take points off each other. And I feel that works in our favour.

GK (A) : Becker & Kelleher
CBs (A) : VvD, Konate, Gomez, Matip and Philips (for the moment at least).
FBs (A but B if one is injured) : Two world class FBs. Weak backup (maybe Tsimitas, Gomez, Davies & Millie).
DM (A but B if Fabs is injured): Fabinho (Hendo or Thiago the backups)
Midfield (A but dips into B territory of one of Fabs, Hendo or Thiago is missing) : Hendo, Thiago, Jones, Milner, Keita, Shaq. & Ox.
Attack (A but B perhaps when we lose two for the AFC, but only for 2 games) Mane, Jota, Firmino, Salah

I reckon we'll sell Neco, Philips, Karius, Minamino, Ojo, Wilson, Woodburn and Origi. I think Shaq will stay unless we really need the cash for another midfielder.

That's a very generous assessment and the kind of "it'll be okay" type thinking that saw our first team and title chances decimated last season.

Yeah. Our first 11 is great still and all. You might be able to extend that to say first 14.

But you need more than 14 players to win a title and CL.

Our back up players are frankly poor. Ironically, the only position we now have the required QUALITY and depth in is CB (if all remain fit).

We desperately need 2 quality midfielders, a quality backup for Trent (and Robbo, if Tsimikas is actually shite), and another forward to replace Origi.

It seems both Arsenal and the Mancs will be spending big this summer, is this because the owners are trying to placate their fans after the ESL debacle? Our owners in comparison came out unscathed

Arsenal spent big and signed Pepe. So it doesnt always help you.
We can spend smart and still improve our squad.
That said, we need to roll out the big bucks and get a midfielder and a striker.

No its not. Not even close, so I have no idea what you are thinking. Last season we started the season with 3 CBs and virtually all of our issues stemmed from that. Add in the 2-3 players I mentioned bringing in, thereby strengthening FB, MF and adding a striker and we would be well stocked. What more would you reasonably want?

So actually you want one more player than I suggested.😉

Think it's ranking our positions as "A but B if someone is injured". It's more "A, but at best D if anyone gets a cramp"

Haha yes we need more strength in depth but we already have it in a number of positions. If we can get those three extra players in we will have covered almost all.

I don't even think it's hindsight. I'd imagine a lot of people wanted another defender. Even klopp did.

Our plan was to start the season with 3 CBS, 2 of which are injury prone, with our DM to drop back as 4th choice...leaving our injury prone midfield a man down.

It was ridiculously poor decision makig by the owners

What happened in January was even more shocking. We were top of the league by Christmas. Down to only one senior CB who was injury-prone - Matip. We should have had someone ready - at least on loan by January 1. We were incredibly lucky Nat Phillips stepped up like anything.

And then waiting so long that we cant get Caleta Car due to Marseille not being able to find a replacement in time.
So poor.

In hindsight tough, if missing out on him got us Kontate, then...

Well, we don't know if that's the better deal yet. Konate could turn out to be a disaster of a signing. Let's not suck ourselves off yet

We can hope he lands in the Fabinho/Alisson/Robertson/Virgil bracket and not the Voronin/Jovanovic/Joe Cole one.

One of the issue though, is that whenever we lack options, we are repeatedly briefed that the management is impressed with certain young prospect and does not want to hinder his progress by signing players who will only be backup/play a bit part though...Those players could do with loan moves and regular football to aid their progress.

I believe Harvey Elliott is the exception to that rule. I think his ability level would let him slot into the first team over his first full season with incredible ease

Messi is now a free agent.
The Qataris are swimming in cash. PSG could easily pay him the 1-2m a week he would ask for and in return, they'll get the global exposure they want with Mbappe, Messi and Neymar heading their attack. That's fucking scary just writing that

Probably need the cash. The ESL did not launch over £100m lost due to no crowds. No doubt TV deal was impacted as licensed prems were shut during lockdown

However, if you believe the noises coming out of Real - they handled the pandemic better than most in Spain, and can afford Mbappe.
