Transfer Rumours 21/22

Have Utd finally spent all their money or something? Why the hell would they sign Ox?

It'd be pretty funny seeing the meltdown if they did, though. It would be their Poulsen/Konchesky moment.

Ox has been solid for us…when he was fit and playing regularly he got some big goals.

Mini is gone? Who’s the goals off the bench?

Origi gone - Who’s the goals off the bench?

No doubt the behind the scenes team of anoraks have it sorted

Mane will be the goals off the bench if Bayern don't sort their shit out.

I hope so. We'll definitely need to strengthen in the squaddies dept.as well as signing the Nunezes of this world.

Maybe Carvalho could get Mini's minutes, which weren't many tbh. Origi hardly played either.

That doesn't mean the squad isn't thin without them though. Assuming Nunez can play from the start and we go with Diaz, Nunez, Salah. Jota as cover. Bobby cover for the 9 if he can get back to form. Thats pretty short still. If Ox goes he's another one who has played up top.

Carvalho must have a bit about him though. Could be a great bench option.

Mini & Origi didn't get many minutes because we have (had) 5 front line attackers (Mane, Diaz, Firmino, Jota & Salah). Most of the time they didn't even make the bench because of them. Origi also missed out on the FAC/LC because he was injured.

Since Carvalho is a midfielder not an attacker then we should be looking at whose midfield minutes he's going to take. I can see him at the point of a midfield three so Fabs/Thiago/Hendo behind him, maybe even Keita too depending on injuries/rest. And if we buy another midfielder (unlikely for next season in IMHO) then he'll be in the queue too of course.

It's unlikely we'll see Carvalho start many games (if any) unless we have a midfield injury crisis. However I think he'll make most benches and now that we are allowed 5 subs I can see him getting a considerable amount of game time, plus he'll start in FAC/LC games. Plenty of minutes then.

Carvalho played the no. 10 behind Mitrovic in a 4-2-3-1. In Klopp's 4-3-3, that no. 10 either becomes a winger or a false 9.

Whatever little I've seen of Carvalho, I can tell you that he's going to play in attack for us.

Klopp's midfield requires a huge degree of pressing, dominating space and winning duels. A 19 year old with a slight frame isn't playing in a Klopp midfield especially when most of his key attributes are offensive ones. Maybe in time he becomes strong enough to play in a midfield three, but that's not the sort of player I think he's going to be.

If anything, he reminds me of a Pulisic type who can play on both wings and also a false 9 if needed.

Agree with everything except that in some games against specific teams Klopp can utilize a defensively weak #8: Minamino played there in a couple of games, Shaqiri played LCM (or a kind of “2nd playmaker” in a 4-2-2-2) and of course Coutinho did in Klopp’s early days. Not saying that this is what Klopp will again gravitate towards; clearly a solid midfield will win us more games - but it’s an option for some games.

You may call him a #10 but Fulham start with 3 attackers (Mitrovic, Kabano, Wilson) from 7 listed (Reid, Abobakar Kamara, Knockaert & Cavalerio) and then support from midfield (AM - Carvalho) so although it's 4-2-3-1 Carvalho is still the point of the midfield not an out and out attacker. Watch any Fulham highlights and you'll see him picking up and advancing from the HW line to the edge of the box, a typical attacking midfielder.

TotalFootballAnalysis's Season Report includes these comments:

In Possession
Contrary to what is being spread around the media, Fulham played in a 4-3-3 formation rather than a 4-2-3-1. Fabio Carvalho would sit as the LCM, and Harrison Reed/Tom Cairney were rotated in the RCM position. In the 1st phase, Fulham build in a 4-1 shape ..... The centre midfielders make 3rd man runs and collect the ball off the forward players and carry the ball into the space behind the player who just played it.

Fulham have great technical players such as Harry Wilson, Neco Williams and Fabio Carvalho who are all comfortable on the ball and good enough to combine in tight spaces and have been coached certain patterns of play in those areas to get the ball to a free player in the box.

High Press
When they don’t have the ball, Fulham attempt to press high in a 4-4-2 when they can. Carvalho plays slightly behind Mitrovic, so he can help him with the press. Fulham ensure that every player in the opposition’s build-up phase is being marked man to man, apart from the far side full-back, which forces them to go long. Carvalho pushes further up than Reed due to his lesser physical and defensive qualities ...

Mid Block
Fulham drop into a mid-block when a team has progressed the play past the first third. They move into a 4-1-4-1 formation where the central midfield is compact to prevent the ball from progressing through the centre. The two central midfielders will stop the opposing midfield from having time to turn on the ball, whilst the defensive midfielder will shield the ball from reaching the centre forward.

Low Block
When the opposition reaches the final third, Fulham shift back to a 4-4-2. Carvalho rushes out from the midfield line to press the opposition defenders on the ball, in order to prevent the opposition from sustaining pressure against them.

Some stats for clarity.
He's listed on TransferMarkt as an AM, CM, LM. His average position for 2021/22 (for a very attacking Fulham side) shows him firmly in the centre circle. 28 games x AM, 9 x CM and 5 x LM.

However, regardless of what any of us calls him, in our side he's up against Diaz / Jota / Nunez & Bobby for the left-sided / centre attacking slots, or Keita / Jones / Elliott for the attacking midfield slot (when we're not playing our preferred Fabs/Thiago/Hendo midfield). I think I know where he has a much better chance of game time !

I'd rather Lewandowski to the Mancs didn't happen. He's still a very fine player and would be an ideal leader of the attack, and of the team generally, for a side in transition like they are.

I'm not certain Ronaldo will stay. Individually he was good last season, but (a) it's not as if he had much competition and (b) IMO his arrival clearly upset the team balance overall - Fernandes' progress in particular came to a screeching halt as soon as the side became a vehicle for Ronaldo first and foremost. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if ten Hag wants to take the team in a completely different direction, and Lewandowski would be just what he needs to help get the process started.

He's already said he's staying.

That said they told Cavani he was going to be their Cf and then bought Ronaldo which greatly pissed Cavani off. Maybe it's Ronaldo's turn.

I dont think you can prejudge what Klopp will do with Carvalho based on how Fulham used him. That's why he's such a good manager - he'll coach the player to play the role he wants, not get the team to play in a way that accommodates certain individuals (like Utd did).

Mini played wherever he could get a game - as a 9, wide forward, even in MF. Those are the minutes that I see Carvalho trying to get.

Origi may have been - unsurprisingly - injured for the cup finals but also when he was needed during the AFCON. He was fot for most of the first half of the season though and didnt play. Maybe thats cos he had five players ahead of him. Maybe he should've been pushing for a start ahead of those five. That's the role of that sixth choice attacker. He failed miserably imo.

I don't see any Klopp wouldn't try Carvalho in midfield when he's already played Elliott there. He's been trying to add creativity to the middle of the park for years.

Klopp's a pragmatist. I doubt he planned on building a 3 man attack with a false nine and goal scoring wingers, but it was just the opportunity that presented itself.

We were in for guys like Goetze and Pulisic during his early years, and he wanted Brandt ahead of Salah.

I'm guessing we'll try to build around Diaz and Nunez, primarily, and various other pieces will be tried to fit in around them.

Carvalho might end up on the right, or in a 2 with Nunez, or as a straight number 10. Maybe even as a Silva style CAM. I think the main thing is to just have a quality selection of versatile players.
