Torres targets shock return in Liverpool's crunch clash at Manchester City

Fernando Torres has stepped up his fight for fitness and started running again in an attempt to make a shock return to Liverpool's line-up against fourth-placed rivals Manchester City.

Liverpool's £21million record signing was expected to be out until the beginning of next month but has set his sights on the crucial Eastlands showdown with City a week on Sunday after a significant breakthrough in his recovery programme.

Manager Rafa Benitez has repeatedly refused to put a date on Torres' likely return but has been hugely encouraged by signs the Spain striker is finally ready to start working his way back to match fitness.

Inactive for almost a month, after hobbling off with a torn cartilage in the early stages of Liverpool's FA Cup defeat by Reading, Torres was given the all-clear to begin running on Tuesday and was seen lapping the pitches at their Melwood training headquarters without any ill-effects.

Benitez may now face a difficult decision, as he weighs the benefits of Torres' matchwinning flair against the risk of aggravating his injury in a match that could have a considerable bearing on who finishes fourth in the Barclays Premier League and claims the final place in next season's Champions' League.

City pose the biggest threat to Liverpool's hopes, and Benitez is certain to be tempted to include Torres after losing at Arsenal on Wednesday night and seeing his side fail to score for the second time in four games.

I got so excited there, until I got to the bottom and saw that it was a link from the DailyFail.

Meh.

True but your baldly man on lfc tv earlier hinted that Torres could be fit for the City game so who knows.

Can't see him starting but to have the option of bringing him on would be a great boost to eveyone at LFC.

I'd be really surprised if Rafa started him. Remember that game against Arsenal last year (or the year before maybe) when he started him off the back of a decent injury lay-off, and had to substitute him early cos he clearly wasn't ready?

Ive been told Torres has been working ridiculously hard to get fit again, first to get to melwood and last to leave every day.

If he can stand up I'd play him.

Who else have we got?

What is there to lose?

there are 12 games left its not worth risking unless he is fully fit, just having him on the bench is enough.

Another placenta-wonder? We should sign her for our entire transfer budget next season...if we can afford her that is.

It would be ace if he were fit, but the last thing we should do is take any risks with Torres's fitness. We can beat City without him.

I have serious doubts about that Bunny

A Torres return would be just the lift we need but shouldn't be risked if not 100% fit. We can beat Citeh but must win the midfield battle as a platform. Rafa has to be more positive and play 4-4-2.

I'd have him on the bench even if he was not going to play, it would hopefully be a morale boost for the rest of the lads and maybe scare city a bit.

Might give our attack a bit of a kick up the arse to perform better as well!

It won't be pretty, but we can beat them, of course we can.
We can beat anyone.

Uh, the world's best striker on the sidelines for another 2 months when we've got no suitable replacement in the squad.

Are you a banker?

This game is a big one, we beat them, their games in hand are nullified. It's worth the risk. If he's running and putting in extra time training then he's obviously well.

Get the world's best striker out against the world's richest club. Lose this one and saving him for later will probably mean we'll run out of games for him to help claw it back.

Are you in the safety industry?

hahahaha. Quite.

Also, imagine rushing him back & him getting seriously injured & scuppering his WC. Now who knows who he'd blame whilst laid up watching his peers play in SA? It may well be enough to turn his head a little.

We need to treat him very well & put his long term career first for a number of reasons.

He's just started running again, after weeks on the sidelines and a stop/start season. So expecting him to be firing on any cylinders in a week is a big ask. If he's near fitness he should at most be on the bench, get him on against tired legs if needs be.

Do you wear a belt and braces?, are you in constant state of worry as to what might happen?.

Excuse me if I think his primary employer's needs are more important than other calls on his time.

I think club football without the chance to play in the Champions League may also impact on his 'long term career'.

We need a goal threat, he's it.

Why do you think it says 'Torres targets...?'

Do you really think he'd be putting in the extra work if he didn't think it was realistic?.

Or will you be sighing again and ignoring the fact he sees the significance of the game even if you don't.

And while you're about it stop giving the impression you can foretell what stage a players fitness is at and what may or may not happen to their health because plainly you don't. Let the player and Manager decide.

Players are renowned for wanting to play football and not really considering the longterm effects of a rushed comeback.

Surely this isn't a new phenomenon?

And regards your last paragraph, you might want to take note of that yourself. No one fucking knows, but if he's just started running, after the length of time he's been out, it's safe to say he won't be ready to start against one of the best sides in the Premiership in a week.

That's all well and good, great idea, except he started off by saying he should play and accusing everyone of being overly cautious. Now he's decided it's up to the manager and player, and we should all stop making assumptions about his fitness..

hmmm....

I agree with Jexy on this.

If we lose to City then 4th place is going to be nearly impossible to get (potentially 9pts behind them), so i'd play him personally.

Ha, like I trust Rafa to make the right decision here. He'll try and save his job the fucker. Torres will probably start with Maxi on the left and Kuyt on the right. He has repeatedly rushed back Gerrard and Torres this season and it stinks cause we have lost both of them to unnecessary injuries because of this.

And I'm completely worried about the outcome of this game. Wtf is gonna be our back line? Degen Skrtel Agger Insua - fuck me!
