*tingle of excitement*

The new Premier League season kicks off later on Saturday, with many tipping it to be the most competitive yet.

Big-spending Manchester City open up away at Tottenham at 1245 BST, with champions Chelsea completing the day's action at home to West Brom at 1730.

Newly-promoted Blackpool get their top-flight return under way at Wigan, with a total of eight games scheduled.

Liverpool host Arsenal in Sunday's only Premier League fixture, with Newcastle away at Manchester United on Monday.

While Chelsea remain many pundits' favourites to retain their Premier League title, Carlo Ancelotti's side could face challenges from a number of sides.

Manchester United, who have won 11 out of the 17 Premier League seasons, go into the campaign as their most likely rivals for the title, and having boosted their squad with the likes of Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez.

But Arsenal - who have kept hold of Cesc Fabregas despite Barcelona's best efforts to sign him this summer - Roy Hodgson's rejuvenated Liverpool and Tottenham, who finished fourth last season, also go into the season full of optimism.

In fact Spurs boss Harry Redknapp insists his side will "never get a better chance" at a title push, adding: "Yes (it is a realistic aim). There is no point me looking anywhere else. The sky is the limit.

"We finished fourth last year and Tottenham will never get a better chance."

To do that, the Londoners would have to finish above Manchester City, the financial powerhouse tipped by many to upset the established order at the top of the league.

The Eastlands club, backed by billionaire Arab owners, took their summer spending to over £100m on Friday by signing £24m Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli, and that figure is likely to rise, with a deal for Aston Villa midfielder James Milner nearly done.

They are one of a number of clubs facing a balancing act in the coming campaign, following the introduction of new Premier League rules on squad limits and home-grown quotas .

Those rulings have had little impact, though, on Blackpool ahead of their Premier League bow, with Ian Holloway boasting just 15 senior players in his squad before making five signings on Wednesday and adding a sixth on Friday.

West Brom have been similarly active following their promotion, Baggies boss Roberto di Matteo bringing in five new players this summer, while the third of the Premier League new boys Newcastle have bolstered their squad with the likes of Sol Campbell, James Perch and Dan Gosling.

Also in action on Saturday are Aston Villa, currently managerless following Martin O'Neill's shock resignation earlier in the week, and West Ham, who will be led by Avram Grant following his summer appointment.

Everton - also tipped to do well this season after their last campaign was hampered by a series of injuries - kick off away at Blackburn, Bolton host Mark Hughes's Fulham, and Steve Bruce goes up against one of his former sides when Sunderland host Birmingham.

The BBC offers extensive coverage of the Premier League , and UK users will be able to see every goal on Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2. There will also be live commentaries on BBC Radio 5 live and live coverage on the BBC website.

The action begins at 1245 at White Hart Lane.

I will be tuning in to Spurs v City at 12.45. I guess at the start of the season a draw would be the best outcome. Plus plenty of red cards and serious injuries of course! 8)

Manchini = new rafa. Try guessing their line up

City have spent over £100 million on players this summer, but as we know this doesn't actually guarantee you a team that works. Mourinho was able to achieve it with Abramovich's money but I am not convinced Mancini is good enough to replicate that at City.

I'm so fucking excited.

I honestly cant wait to see how Roy fares with us & what decisions he makes.

Will Citeh play like a team or like a bunch of overpaid individuals with no real spirit? Will Fergie's orphaned 6'2 striker be the next flop or the next Drogba? Will Arsenal's 'kids' make the step up & play with enough heart to beat the top teams as well as the also-rans? Will Chelsea live up to their billing & challenge on all fronts, or will a more mature side struggle?

The answers will all be revealed. And I cant fucking wait!

You're probably right, but I'd like Spurs to smash them really.

I love the excitement of the first weekend. Hope we can hit the ground running and see how things go from there.

Mancini will be under massive pressure by the end of the month.

the current plight liverpool find themselves, I'm finding it impossible to get excited about this season. hopefully this will change after watching our first league game, win, lose or draw.

Remember this time last year? I went down to Spurs... Not only was it fucking awful but they shut the tube and you had to walk for miles listening to the bastards celebrate like they'd won the league. And another fucking thing.... If them cockneys want to sing 'sign on' to me without irony in their voice they can fuck off. I mean Spurs is one of the most rancid parts of the world and it costs the same for one of their stinking little rabbit hutches that has a single benefit of being close to Seven Sisters... so that you can escape Calcutta... that's it, the sole benefit, the leading light on the estate agents form is that you can fuck off quickly... it costs the same for one of those studio flat dumps with a two hob cooker with fucking pubes on it, as it does for a four bedroom detached on the coast here. Which fucking weirdos would want that?

The sheer excitement got the better of me.

I only wish my fellow fans had a common sense of sarcasm so that we would start the chorus of 'sign on' this year to all them nobheads who've had to send their au pairs back to Slovenia. And yes I always fucking rant when I'm this hungover

bizarre - city spend 300m in two years and end up with a 5 man midfield and one up front - pretty industrial...

4-5-1 is the new 4-4-2 and england would have progressed further had they followed suit, but I digress.

Spurs looking good so far.

Moment earlier on where Silva had the freedom of the middle of the pitch, and thought he had all the time in the World, only to be easily shrugged off the ball and losing possession.

Hope we see alot of that this season.

What a start from Joe Hart.

Good game this.

Although I've got Adebayor in my fantasy team =/

Were any of the saves really that difficult though? Maybe I'm being too harsh.

I thought the reflex save from Defoe was exceptional and the deflected shot was also very good.

Yeah, couldn't believe how casual silva was. He must have known people were catching him?
[/quote]

He's been talking a good game in one or two interviews I've seen, and I do think he's a good player, but I reckon he'll take a while to get accustomed to English football. I don't expect to start seeing the best of him till some time next season.
