The Manager

Totally against caretaker managers - who do you think ?
I imagine we would be promoting from within if this happened, obvious choice is going to be Pascoe. I don't have enough of a feel for any of our coaches to endorse one though.

External options are Pulis, and Sherwood. They're both dickheads in their own right, but as far as caretaker managers go, you want incredibly pragmatic people in that role. There's enough talent in the squad that at this stage we desperately need to be winning matches, ugly or not.

These days we have a very physically talented squad that is lacking tactically. It might be ugly, but I could genuinely see someone like Pulis getting us across the line. It might not be sexy, pretty, or even palatable, but it beats the alternative.

I'm utterly unconvinced that BR is the long term solution at this stage. I don't see him changing into a defensively sound coach, or identifying transfer targets better. And we've seen he likes all too well to play the politics of the dressing room and coaching set up, and has a tendency to overplay some players. The biggest red flag for me is that he preaches tiki taka, but we get most of our attacking threat from the counter, and we look relatively helpless otherwise.

He could potentially turn it around and get us to fourth, but even if he does so, he's not the solution for the next several years. You simply can't have down periods this extended and this mediocre at this level of the game, especially with the talent at his disposal.

So for me we're better off going in a different direction after this season, and we need to salvage what we can this year. BR might do it, but as far as consistently taking points goes, others do it better and more consistently.

I also get the feeling the dressing room is fractured, and he's lost the confidence of his players. The meritocracy of last season is long gone. That's ominous for me, we could easily crash and burn going forward if that's the case, and it might almost be an issue of cutting our losses.

I agree that it's time to at least be looking at options, but if the options are those, then we're better off sticking with what we have.

For the record i'd give BR until the end of the season and take a look at it again then. I understand the arguments of why people might want him gone now, but when taking into account our performances under him last season, the loss/injuries of Suarez and Sturridge + the fact that we have a lot of young players who will take time to establish themselves, personally I think he deserves more time.

I think FSG are now hopelessly confused. First of all, recognising their own inexperience, they went with something pragmatic. Then, when they decided they knew enough about it, they opted for something idealistic: a young man with a plan. Now what do they want? Do they know? I doubt the next young coach with a big dossier and the gift of the gab will win them over. They need to win stuff, finish high and generate lots of money, asap. But I also doubt they'll like the idea of going for some dour results merchant. I really don't think they know what they want.

Sometimes I think we're always gona be fucked until we go all man city and get some sugar daddy owners in regardless of what manager we have

I thought they've wanted the proverbial 'young hungry' coach working under a DoF pretty much since they sacked Hodgson? Only to twice allow themselves to be derailed.

If that's right then I just wish they'd get on and do it

Gerrard is hard to work out. He seems pissed off with everyone - the players, the staff, the owners. For the good of the club he needs to end the speculation about his future and either say he's off or get his head right and stand up for the cause. It's no good for team morale when your captain is either being coy about his plans or can't make up his mind. And as I've said, with managers he goes from wide-eyed adoration to seething contempt within months, if not weeks. If he doesn't realise the impression he's making, he's stupid, and if he DOES realise it, then he's more cynical than even his arch critics think. He's got many great qualities but maturity as a man isn't one of them. When circumstances most need a responsible, level-headed, selfless leader, he acts like a spoilt, self-obsessed, petulant brat.

LFCTS ‏@LFCTS Emre Can has played only 15 minutes since he scored and was our best player against Chelsea - 7 games. That is unexplainable.

I like Brendan and I really want him to succeed, but then I read stuff like this and I get real mad at him.

Liverpool Echo's James Pearce one of the most trusted persons regarding LFC affairs has come out to suggest that the Transfer Committee (TC) could have made BR's work difficult at Anfield. The sale of senior players on big wages and the signings that BR made this season were not totally his choice, but the committee's. Many managers refused to work under a sporting director when they were interviewed by FSG for the job before BR came in. FSG later set up this committee that is identical, or perhaps wields more power than a sporting director, whilst giving the idea that the manager is totally in charge. Whatever decision the manager makes with regards to signings and contracts, will be voted by 5 people in the committee. Only in the case of a majority vote, BR can sign the players he wants. Otherwise he has to improvise with the players chosen by the TC. Pearce says BR NEVER wanted to sign Balotelli but was forced to settle for him. In other words, it was the TC that ultimately failed to replace Suarez despite getting big money by selling him. Pearce says BR also made it clear that he wanted Michel Vorm and that signing a GK is a priority. But he says the transfer committee refused to pay his value despite only spending over 30mil in net spending this summer. This also had a significant impact on Mignolet's form as LFC didn't try to provide competition for the Belgian. Pearce says paying top bucks for Lovren made perfect sense at that point, as he was not one for the future, but was coming in as a top centre back, based on his form with the Saints and his Premier League experience. He was bought to hit the ground running. However he's had a major dip in form which is disappointing says Pearce. Similar tone has been voiced by Mike Bernard, a former employee of FSG, who said BR failing to see eye-to-eye with some of the TC members and their signings, is getting a little unsavoury. Mike noted that BR wanted Eriksen and Bony but was overruled. This also goes back to previous failures to show the money and securing players early when they had interest to move to LFC. Plenty of dragging negotiations and low-balling saw the failure of securing targets such as Willian, Salah, Mikhtaryan, Konoplyanka and more. Diego Costa was identified by BR as a transfer target when Costa was playing as a wing-forward, long before he became a star in that out-and-out striker position and caught the whole world's attention. TC thought his release clause of 20mil back then was too much. The rest is history. While we drag our feet on targets, other clubs come into the picture, showed the money and swooped them as we watch helplessly. Even for Sanchez, Phil Thompson declared during the world cup that we had Sanchez in the bag. However too much negotiations into details and conditions in payment method allowed Arsenal to sneak in and turn his and his wife's head.

Pearce also does not believe with the popular excuse that BR got founded after Suarez left, and that it was the Uruguayan who made BR look good last season. He says BR's tactical acumen led the team prosper last season, not Suarez alone. The expectations has been raised by last season's football and LFC are struggling with the pressure now he adds. Pearce labels Borini's position as strange and wonders if it could be the club showing frustration against him, for not being able to secure 14mil from Sunderland and another 13mil from QPR. They're certainly making it clear to Borini that he shouldn't reject another deal in January. Another journo Graham Beecroft says Borini could have indicated that he rather sit on the bench and take the wages or run down his contract, than moving to a small club ie Sunderland, QPR who are also refusing to pay more wages than LFC. Could be the reason why he's strangely frozen. Could be the club's decision not the manager's.

The last time Pearce spoke to BR, the manager said Can and some of the new players are still trying to adapt to his philosophy of football and it could be the reason why BR resorts to playing those who know what is expected of them for now. But Pearce says he will speak to BR again about Can to find out more on his position. Pearce says LFC's season could depend on Sturridge coming back to be paired with Balotelli upfront, and then allow the rest of the team to click. Pearce doesn't know if FSG are willing to spend in January but it's a question of can they afford not to. As champions league new TV deal brings in over 40mil next season compared to 25mil before, he opines that LFC must spend. Especially on a top quality striker, taking into account Studge's fitness.

I've had high hopes for him too (I still retain some faith in him). But there's no way of dressing it up beyond saying he's panicked of late, lost his head when under pressure. The constant changes in playing personnel, formations, playing style and inexplicable dropping of players (Lucas this weekend) all smack of a loss in self confidence and vision.

Unfortunately for him, his propensity for grand rhetoric when on the up is now biting him on the arse on the way down. The sometimes inflated way he speaks of himself and his 'vision' now leaves him looking hollowed out and relatively weak. And he knows it. It's a real test of character right now and he's fucking it up a good bit.

Still, if he's to prove that he's got some meat on the bone of his rhetoric, that he's not simply hoodwinked himself (us all) into believing that his leadership (rather than the superhuman effort of a world class player) was central to a wonderful adventure last season, he has to respond with self-belief and real guts to this sudden downfall. That requires a return to his attack-minded philosophy, a willingness to encourage and put faith in the players he's signed, and an objective view of the current merits of recent legends.

If he carries on in this recent vein, he'll be gone before the year is out.

If he's going to stay, even if it's just until the end of the season, the club has got to get behind him. It just has to. Look at last week: he was left to big himself up, saying he was right for the job. That should have been done by someone at the club - and they know it. The hacks can see that and it makes them sniff a sacking. Henry and Werner ought to fly over and spend a few days calming things down, booting a few arses behind the scenes and holding some clear the air discussions.

So Pearce is Rodgson's mouthpiece now is he? Are we going to get weekly "they're not his signings though, it's the committee you see" shite being pumped out now to excuse the bollocks the fans have to sit through?

As I mentioned last week. Those signings - regardless of who the fuck bought them - don't excuse 3 straight seasons of defensive deficiencies. Skrtel, Toure, Agger, Sakho, Lovren, etc etc are not bad footballers. They're not. But they have been, and continue to be, extremely badly coached.

And there's no committee you can lay blame upon for that.

Isn't there a standard version of similar stories whenever any of our manager struggles. With Rafa too it gave the impression that all the flops are due to Parry and we missed out on all the big success purchases all over Europe only due to dithering by Parry.

The only manager with whom it did not happen was with King Kenny as he had the decency and the courage to support Comoli and say that all the signings were made with his blessing and did not hang the scouting team out to dry.

Get Torres on loan get Studge fit, get Can and Lallana in the team and watch us fly up the table and win the Europa league.

If Sturridge is fit we don't need Torres.

Torres is absolutely fucking ludicrous suggestion

Studge will play top s10 to 15 more games this season for us and will need resting with 3 games a week even if he somehow managed to stay fit.

We need another striker and if we can't get someone like Bony or similar I'd rather Torres over Borini, Lambert, Mario or Sterling in the false 9 role.

Why would we want to repeat the same mistake we made in the summer????

Sturridge is never fit!!!! He has intermittent periods where he's not injured but you can't call him fit. If this is the last injury he has this season it'll be astonishing.

Whether Torres is the answer to that problem - even on loan - is extremely doubtful.

Interesting to note that Suarez is being blamed for Barca falling off the pace in La Liga. I don't think he's been too bad - has been looking sharper and trying to come to terms with a very different playing approach. Setting up players for fun though they seem unable to finish the chances (we know how that feels) and scoring twice in the CL.

That said, I'd be kind of happy to see that feeling continue with the Barca fans and media. 😉

We should all be desperate for Suarez to be successful.

If he moves on from there, it won't be back to us - and I actually don't think I could stomach watching him play for City, Chelsea or Utd - and that's where he'd end up.

He's our modern day fan on the pitch.

Does the TC also write BR's stupid post match comments?

No but Id love to see them answer questions about whether or not they deserve to be sacked after every game. Its easy to make the big calls and hide in the corporate box, a manager has to face the music

Agree with much of that but not sure about the Studge. Obv.he's had his injury probs, but we looked to have stabilised them before Hodgson got his hands on him. It's precisely because the Studge *is* vulnerable that Hodgson's ignorance and stubbornness have proven so destructive in that regard.
