Fair enough though, he wants to go and we know that for sure now; sell him. Liverpool FC has said good-bye to far better players than Xabi Alonso.
[/quote]

Yes, I agree, but have we ever been in this situation before?
Owen & McManaman both left the club due to contract related issues.
We have a lost one of Europe best CM's, who is in his prime and has 3 full years on his contract.
To my mind we have never had to sell one of our best players because he wanted to leave the club.

Apparently Xabi's finally handed in his transfer request.

I've lost all respect for you xabi and what's worse you were one of my favorite players.
I'm getting old and jaded but I don't think it's worth having favorite players.

He's not *actually* on this forum, you know.

What will this supposed transfer request do to the fee?
It weakens our position greatly.

it doesn't weaken our position at all, we don't HAVE to except a transfer request we have a three year contract, all xabi has done is lost himself some money from the transfer fee.

Not really. Xabi misses out on a fat loyalty bonus which enables us to accept a slightly lower offer without losing out. It just means it should be resolved a lot quicker.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

we'll agree on 25 million pounds and be made to feel better that xabi won't get his 2 million or so compensation as he's handed in his request.

i'd be surprised if we get 30 million plus here. i'd have took 20 million cash and wesley.

I don't think this move is about the money for Alonso anyway, so I'm not that surprised that he's not bothered about losing a bonus.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I STILL think TR or no we shouldn't accept a PENNY less than 30 million.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If a player wants to leave, it's only right and proper that he hands in a transfer request. It's a complete joke when a player tries to engineer a move away but at the same time want his loyalty bonus.

So, Xabi has done the right thing again in that he wants to leave and so he should give up his bonus. It's would be hard to find a central midfielder of Xabi's qualities but it wouldn't be as hard to find one that doesn't has his limitations.

Souness. That was a big blow. But we had a team confident enough to overcome the problems, even though it took ages to get the midfield back up to that level.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has edged closer to Real Madrid after handing in a transfer request at Anfield, according to reports.

The Spain international has been at the centre of a long-running transfer saga as La Liga giants Madrid have made no secret of their desire to secure a deal.

Liverpool have refused to budge from an asking price for Alonso in the region of £30million, which has stalled any potential move to the Bernabeu.

But the Reds may now be prepared to allow the former Real Sociedad star to leave following accounts he has submitted a written transfer request to the club's hierarchy.

Speculation suggests a deal will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a fee reported to be in the region of £25m.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has maintained he does not want to sell Alonso, but the midfielder is said to have been angered by his manager's apparent desire to sell in order to finance an unsuccessful pursuit of Gareth Barry last summer.

The Reds signed Alonso for £10.5m in 2004, shortly after Benitez arrived on Merseyside, and the 27-year-old helped secure the famous UEFA Champions League final success over AC Milan in his debut season

XABI ALONSO’S proposed transfer to Real Madrid moved a step closer today – after the Spaniard put in a formal written transfer request.

The 27-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation this summer with Real officials repeatedly stating their desire to sign the midfielder.

Alonso has consistently refused to publicly reveal his intentions and boss Rafa Benitez has always insisted he didn’t want to sell the Spanish international.

Benitez held talks with Alonso during the club’s Far East tour in a desperate bid to convince him to stay.

However, Alonso refused to make any guarantees and has now finally admitted he sees his future away from Anfield.

Alonso’s request is likely to be granted with Benitez reluctantly agreeing to sell a player who has three years remaining on his current contract.

The two clubs will now attempt to agree a fee with Real set to increase their initial offer of £24million closer to Liverpool’s valuation of £30million.
