The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

No Turner. Who is a good CB, but a bit overpriced. Hull are meant to be looking for £8million.
I would cry if we signed Cattermole. He is very average.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

this whole summer has made me insane = cheeky bid for Ireland?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I thought the Cattermole rumour was deliberately planted on RAWK to catch the journalists who were hovering there. The person who did it certainly THOUGHT he'd caught them when it was duly reported. Don't tell me it's become a reality!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is keen to add more English players to his squad and is preparing a £12m bid for Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole and will offer Hull £5.5m for defender Michael Turner.
Full story: Daily Mail

However, any deal for Cattermole and Turner is dependent on the sale of Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid but the clubs are close to a £30m deal for the 27-year-old.

Liverpool have given Real 48 hours to complete Alonso's signing with the Spanish giants set to make an improved bid of between £28m and £30m.

Did we ALL miss some kind of massive improvement in Catterwaul last year? I dont even remember him being mentioned other than once in a while 'Oh thats a bad tackle from Cattermole' or words to that effect. I do quite like Turner though and we DO need a centre back.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Thing is, I do actually quite like Cattermole but only because he could effectively replace Lucas as the young, sub midfielder.

If he turns out to be Xabi Alonso's replacement it'd seriously damage our title chances.

Valencia replacing Ronaldo springs to mind...

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Yep, Cattermole is a decent player but not for that price and definitelly not to replace Xabi.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if we buy cattermole for 12 million, no i'll stop there, how about if we buy cattermole period to replace alonso then rafa needs a slap.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Apparently Xabi's finally handed in his transfer request.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

barring some amazing manoeuvrings by rafa in signing both a capable replacement and modifying our formation and getting it working in a little under 3 weeks there goes the title.

i'm sure he has a plan, kinda relieved this transfer is coming to an end and we can play our hand and bring in the players that we have lined up to respond to this scenario.

better now than the last day of the window.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Id take the Cattermole rumour with a giant pinch of salt. If everyththing the Mail wrote was true, we'd have 150 players in the first team.

So now its official, Xabi wants to leave. Well, we all knew it would come to this.
Lets hope we get some great playes in.
The club moves on, no player is bigger than the club, and we've moved on before and gotten stronger.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Wasn't it a well known fact that he wanted out? All signs were pointing at the exit door, and now he has (finally) confirmed it.
I'd like to believe that Rafa does have a plan, and was not relying on his ability to make Xabi change his mind or on Lucas becoming the new Xabi. He will now have to act quickly and secure an appropriate replacement (and maybe with the addition of the Arbeloa + Dossena money) get some more quality to the team.
BTW, how is this transfer request going to impact the financial aspect of the deal? will it force the price down? will it save LFC some "loyalty" bonus?

So, all the best Xabi. Thanks for the service and the memories, and follow the path you chose. I can't wish you luck in Madrid simply because I really really don't like that club, but I wouldn'y mind Spain winning the WC next year.

Well that's it then I suppose. Gutted.

My confidence in our chances has just taken a severe knock. Please restore it Rafa.

You are in denial Stu. Its gonna happen, just a matter of when not if.

We need it to go through quickly now

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Wow. Well that's that then.

Gutted. And very disappointed with Alonso, everyone could see how close we came last season, and I'm sure most of the squad believes we're on the verge of something big right now, I'm saddened that he couldn't give this club and us fans another year, even if things were strained with Rafa and Madrid seemed glamorous and desirable.

Fair enough though, he wants to go and we know that for sure now; sell him. Liverpool FC has said good-bye to far better players than Xabi Alonso.

Maybe so Jack. I'm just gonna hold out a little bit longer on this one.
No harm in it.

I do agree with you though. IF it is going to happen, it needs to happen fast, really fast.

I've lost all respect for you xabi and what's worse you were one of my favorite players.
I'm getting old and jaded but I don't think it's worth having favorite players.
