The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Whatever happened to all the talk about Alonso being a Basque, which meant he'd never play for Madrid???
He played for Sociedad not Bilbao.
Sociedad is the spanish club, Bilbao is the Basque club.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

This whole sorry episode should teach quite a few of you a valuable lesson.

When it comes to selecting your current favourite LFC icon, many things should be taken into consideration. It's not just about looks and talent, things such as loyalty and a desire to be part of the LFC family (long term) should also be taken into account.

For those of you who are now looking for a new LFC hero, i would seriously recommend choosing a certain Rafa Benitez. I've found that he fulfils all of the criteria and I'm certain that those of you that do go with this choice will be very satisfied.

Maybe Bilbao's attitudes are more extreme, but they're both Basque clubs.  Sociedad are from San Sebastian, which is in the Basque country.  And Xabi himself is definitely a Basque.

I know its San Sebastian. La Real Sociedad, the club related to the spanish royalty.
Its not a problem for these moderate Basques moving from La Real to Real Madrid.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

What I find weird is that during all the talks no one mentioned Huntelaar as part of the deal

I think him and Wesly would sweeten the deal greatly

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Sneijder maybe, but not Huntelaar - good goal poacher, but such a player doesn't really fit into Rafa's system (otherwise I suspect we'd have taken Owen back), and in any case I can't see him going anywhere to be second choice, which he effectively became at Madrid.

I don't accept that Alonso has been disloyal at all

Players will always come and go and I find it perfectly acceptable that a player from Spain will be interested in playing for a top Spanish club.

It has been fairly obvious that Alonso was interested in this move. If its hardly a shock to us then Benitez and the rest of the management at Liverpool would have been well aware it was going to happen.

If Alonso had no regard for Liverpool he could have pushed for this a long time ago. Yes, he didn't come out and state that he wanted to stay, but crucially he didn't come out and state he wanted to go either.
If he had done that would have made it a lot easier for Madrid, we would have gotten less of a fee and we would probably have had to pay 20%(?) to Real Sociedad too. As it stands we have had time to make other arrangements, we are still in a position to negotiate on the fee and the % deal will Sociedad has expired.

I for one hope that Alonso goes on to be a great success in Spain (not in the Champions League though, because we are in that). Not every player who dares to want to play for another team is a cunt you know.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I fucking hate Madrid, so I hope Alonso falls on his arse.

I also kind of hope he ends up being a reserve player for them, and loses his international place, and then comes back begging to Liverpool, but we're like "no man, you had your chance, and you thought the grass was greener", and then he becomes a reclusive alcoholic, who rocks hugging his knees, mumbling the words to YNWA as tears streak his soiled cheeks.
Im angrier today with him than i have been.
It seems to be the case that his mind was already made up to leave, maybe as far back as last summer. Certainly this year. He had already told the players i understand that he wants to go.
And when does he hand in a transfer request? A fortnight before the new season starts.
If he had any decency he would have done it June the 1st. We would still decide the fee, but with 2 months to negotiate a replacement, not 2 weeks. Hes put us on the back foot here in our most important campaign in years. He is for me at least a bit of a twat. And a ginge in denial.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Bugger.

Well, I hope Rafa has someone good lined up to replace him.

And Madrid can still get fucked, transfer request or not, if they don't meet our valuation of him then we should tell them to piss off.

I'd rather have an unhappy Xabi than a pisspoor sum

There was nothing stopping us negotiating for a replacement. It won't have come as a massive shock to anyone.

Sorry but there was, namely that we didn't want him to go. Looking for replacements would hardly have been consistent with trying to get him to stay.

I don't accept that the club have spent the summer desperately begging Alonso to stay and even if they have, him going would still have been a potential risk wouldn't it? This would be a shock for noone.

And if the club, even though they were aware Alonso wanted to go, were still planning on keeping him then fine. The request can still be turned down.

Possibly but if its all over the press every single day and the player himself is pretty much saying he wants to go then only an idiot wouldn't make some kind of contingency plan. The chances of him staying clearly were not great.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Why didn't he put in a transfer request at the end of last season then, instead of choosing to leave it until 2 weeks before we kick off again?
Im sure they have looked at replacements Richey. The point is that Rafa obviously thought he could change Xabis mind and get him to stay hence the talk about the fans in Singapore, so he didnt sign anyone else and here we are, 2 games left of pre-season and even if we know who we are replacing him with, if xabi had put his cards on the table earlier, this would be done and whoever was to be his replacement would have already played 2 or 3 warm ups with his new team.
He's left it till the last minute and fucked us over.

No need to panic just yet.
