The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I fucking hate Madrid, so I hope Alonso falls on his arse.

I also kind of hope he ends up being a reserve player for them, and loses his international place, and then comes back begging to Liverpool, but we're like "no man, you had your chance, and you thought the grass was greener", and then he becomes a reclusive alcoholic, who rocks hugging his knees, mumbling the words to YNWA as tears streak his soiled cheeks.
Noo! I don't like that. I think we should take him back when he comes begging, for like a million. And then realise this was all just a ploy to get some money out of Madrid, and he always knew he'd be back with us by January.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Xabi should have had the decency to hand in his transfer request long ago. It's ridiculous when a player actually wants to leave yet would not hand in a transfer request willing to receive his loyalty bonus. He's been paid a nice salary + bonuses for his services here, and he should not expect any loaylty bonus if he wants to leave.

Having said that I'd really like to believe that Rafa has a replacement lined up in time. A manager of Rafa's calibre cannot have all his plans for a title challenge depending on his ability to convince a player to stay (unless he's going to turn down that request).

Oh, and he'd better tell Mascherano he's staying no matter what his agent/brother/mother/cousindog/Messi is saying

No, it's alcoholism in a cockroach infested bedsit in Madrid for Xabi.

If Rafa hadn't tried to sell Alonso last summer, and Madrid came in this summer as they have, do people think Alonso would have still wanted to go?

Yes. And to be fair I think that this whole thing of "he wanted to sell me last year so I want to leave this year" is just an excuse (not sure it's even an excuse).

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If he had handed in his request ages ago he probably would have gone ages ago, and our negotiations with Madrid (with whom I suspect we have already gone a way towards agreeing a fee) would have been very different.
We also would have had to pay a % of what we got to Real Sociedad, which we now do not have to do.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't necessarily think he would have. And it's *inevitable* that last summer has played its part in his decision making process, I can't believe anyone would think it hasn't or wouldn't effect how he feels about his place at the club.

I wouldn't bet against it.

I think he'd only leave us for Barca or Madrid, otherwise he'd be content to stay with us.

Such is football, such is life.

Grow up, man. Christ, if he thinks he was treated poorly here (dispite Rafa's YEAR LONG insistance that he wants him to stay now), let's hope his form doesn't drop for a few months in Madrid... He'll never leave his bedroom again.

This whole sorry episode should teach quite a few of you a valuable lesson.

When it comes to selecting your current favourite LFC icon, many things should be taken into consideration. It's not just about looks and talent, things such as loyalty and a desire to be part of the LFC family (long term) should also be taken into account.

For those of you who are now looking for a new LFC hero, i would seriously recommend choosing a certain Rafa Benitez. I've found that he fulfils all of the criteria and I'm certain that those of you that do go with this choice will be very satisfied.
Oh, for Christ's sake...

Yep, let's all fall and worship at the feet of a man who weakened a squad in serious contention for thir first title in 20 years, to settle a personal score.

The man has (and read carefully please, everybody), strengthened us enormously and brought us great glory but let's not make him the messiah just yet, eh?

Bullshit, utter bull.

Firstly, I think we should all wise up to the fact that Rafa's public claims don't always match what goes on behind closed doors, that's not an attack on our beloved Rafa, just a simple observation. So we don't really know if he's been laying it on thick with Xabi asking him to stay.

Secondly, *anyone* on here relates this situation to their own working situation would want to leave. FACT. You're manager makes it known to you, your colleagues, partner organisations/clients whomever that he wants to get rid of you and replace you with someone else. That someone else falls through so you end up staying, you wouldn't look for another job on your own terms at the first given opportunity? Like hell you wouldn't.

Try looking it this way:
- You've been underperforming at work for 2 years (let's not get into word wars oer semantics and agree that Xabi's level of performance in *those* two seasons was much below his own standards).
- Your manager is not happy with you to the point that he wants to replace you. He fails in getting the replacement.
- You manage to deliver a high quality performance again. Your manager is happy again and does not want rid. He gives you a new contract.
- You should be happy since you love you working place, your collegues, the fans (...)
- You get a pay rise and stay in order to help leading your company to success.

Bollocks, Anita.

This is football - Shit happens. And I'm not defending Rafa here, specifically.

As for your example, very possibly, yes. But not necessarily. You may choose to not believe that, I don't care. I'd look at the big picture, and try to put hurt feeling aside. if I still had a potentially glorious opportunity here, regardless of the past, I'd not necessarily cut off my nose to spite my face.

You talk about wising up about Rafa's public-speak..? Whilst agreeing that we can't take as gospel what comes out of any manager's mouth, that's an awfully convenient stance for you to take, considering your feelings on this player - You'd defend Xabi if he set your house on fire, FFS. And weren't you the one with that "Xabi's been told to go by the club, even though he doesn't want to" shite several pages back? Pick the lie that best suits your case, is it?

Why the fcuk can't some people understand that this really isn't a huge deal, unless the parties involved cannot be professional enough to realise such things happen in their chosen profession and move past it?

I just think all the BS on here today is unfair to him. This is a player who has been a model professional, it's sad to see him go but we can't really blame him given the way he's been treated, simple as.

And I'm not even gonna bother with all this 'underperforming' nonsense. I'd love to see how many of you are ready to sell Gerrard if he has a bad patch of form. Proven quality is proven quality.

It seems to be the case that his mind was already made up to leave, maybe as far back as last summer. Certainly this year. He had already told the players i understand that he wants to go.
And when does he hand in a transfer request? A fortnight before the new season starts.
If he had any decency he would have done it June the 1st. We would still decide the fee, but with 2 months to negotiate a replacement, not 2 weeks. Hes put us on the back foot here in our most important campaign in years. He is for me at least a bit of a twat. And a ginge in denial.

He's not the model pro who loves this team and has done everything right that many are trying to paint him as. Waiting this long to do what he should have done fcuking weeks ago really, REALLY leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

Neets, that was over a year ago. Rafa's backtracked unequivocally over the last year and made Xabi a lynchpin of his midfield.

If Xabi really is smarting over last summer, he's not half the man I'd imagine him to be. It's probably more to do with family/Intl reasons.

Maybe he's tried to be patient and let the clubs negociate, but Rafa made it clear a few days ago that Alonso would have to put in a transfer request, and so he has. Works out nice and dandy for Rafa, no one can blame him now, cos he wouldn't want to upset the beloved fans he's so at one with.

You don't want to believe what Rafa says about this, but are happy to make the "the club's told him to bugger off" stance? That's what I meant by picking your lies to suit your opinion.

Where we disagree enoprmously is on the "model professional" bit... He hasn't been, imho. Not by waiting THIS long to do what he should have done months ago, and ESPECIALLY not if his reason for wanting to leave are what we've just been discussing. That's NOT being a model professional in any book I've ever read.

And I never said that he wasn't quality. He is, undoubtedly. But, a "bad patch"? Do me a favour...

All I can say is thank God that the club didn't take the same stance when Stevie handed in a transfer request that Xabi has taken with the club, or we'd have sold one of our greatest players ever, just 'cos he did briefly flirted with an idea that wasn't exactly ideal.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

GB:

Following today`s press reports that Xabi Alonso has handed in a written transfer request; we have been inundated with questions from fans asking if this is true...

In response, I can only say that this is a very complicated situation and I am hearing conflicting versions of events: the player`s entourage are denying that Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request; while on the other hand, Liverpool Football Club insists that a transfer request was submitted to the club last night, and it has been suggested that the paperwork was prepared at least a month in advance.

I am of the opinion that the decision to make this public knowledge represents an attempt to speed up the negotiations while simultaneously making it known that it is the player who wants to leave.

As has been widely reported, Rafa Benitez had effectively placed a 48 hour deadline on the deal and it is apparent that Liverpool want this matter resolved once and for all, today, so that they can plan for life with, or without, Alonso from tomorrow. However, Real Madrid – or should we say Florentino Perez – may stubbornly refuse to be seen to pressured into reacting to any ultimatum and, furthermore, the Spanish club are encountering difficulties in offloading players to raise funds and free up space in an overloaded squad.

On the other hand, it is possible that a fee could be agreed today and that Liverpool accept an immediate first instalment with subsequent payments made at a later date covering the total amount.

The ball has now been placed in Real Madrid`s court and it is impossible to second guess what their next move will be. It is evident that at least one party wants the matter resolved today, but whether or not they get their wish remains to be seen...

Im angrier today with him than i have been.

Exactly, Part II.

He's not the model pro who loves this team and has done everything right that many are trying to paint him as. Waiting this long to do what he should have done fcuking weeks ago really, REALLY leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

Or maybe, just maybe, RAFA DOESN'T WANT TO GET RID OF HIM?

Of course he'd have to put in a fcuking transfer request if he wants to leave a club that don't want to sell him! How is that Rafa being a dickhead?

Yes, I'm glad he's been patiently waiting for the club to do something that they have no earthly interest in doing... Model pro.

Honestly Whaddapie, I can't be bothered with this. You're not gonna change my mind and I don't really care about changing yours.
