The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Liverpool to step up bid for David SilvaJames Ducker, Gary Jacob

Liverpool will intensify their efforts to sign David Silva, the Valencia playmaker, with Xabi Alonso expected to complete a £32 million move to Real Madrid next week.

The Spain midfield player is not expected to travel with the Liverpool squad for their pre-season tour to Asia tomorrow night. Real Sociedad, who sold Alonso for £10.5 million in August 2004, stood to receive 20 per cent of the transfer fee, but that agreement is scheduled to expire today.

It was unclear last night whether Wesley Sneijder, Real’s attacking midfield player, would be used as a makeweight in the prospective transfer.

We're playing Rapid Vienna on Sunday evening, so the squad will not be leaving for Asia tomorrow night.

It wouldn't be unusual to fly the same night, we've done it loads of times in Europe.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Purely speculative I presume but if Xabi is to go wouldn't it be great if there was a bit of a bidding war for him?

Inter await Eto'o and chase Alonso Saturday 18 July, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Inter and Barcelona await Samuel Eto’o’s signature to complete the Zlatan Ibrahimovic move, there are reports the money will be spent on Xabi Alonso.

The two clubs have already declared a deal has been done for around £40m plus Eto’o and the loan with option to buy Aleksandr Hleb.

According to the newspapers on both sides of Europe, the only hiccup now is waiting for the Cameroon striker to agree personal terms.

There was a bad start when agent Jose Maria Mesalles told journalists “the clubs cannot negotiate a transfer without our consent.â€

Spanish paper ‘As’ claim he is demanding a five-year contract worth £8m per season and a £13m farewell bonus from Barcelona.

If Eto’o does give the all-clear, then Inter are already considering how to spend the money and there is a new theory.

According to the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport,’ the target is Liverpool and Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso.

He is already on his way out of Anfield Road after Real Madrid showed interest, but the Merengues are struggling to meet his £30m price-tag.

It would be quite a snub for the Nerazzurri to sweep in and intercept these negotiations for a player who, after Lucio, Diego Milito and Thiago Motta, would further strengthen the squad.

El Mundo Deportivo reporting a 35m euro fee agreed with Real Madrid.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Xabi Alonso becomes the next few hours in the fifth signing of the new galactic being constructed Madrid Florentino Perez. Finally, Rafa Benitez, Liverpool's technical, has given his approval to conduct the transfer, accepting the last offer made by the club merengue (35 million), but with three conditions: to include a player in the Madrid final that the operation be closed this weekend and collect that amount in cash and to act without time limits or guarantees worth.

Benitez plans

Rafa Benitez intends to invest the money that is collected by the English club in a reinforcement. The focus is in Valencia David Silva, who are already well advanced talks. The fact that the boat out a David Villa and has opted for Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the doors to the Canaries, especially considering that the president 'Che', Manuel Llorente, already had received more than 40 million Barça to lighten poor Levantine club's coffers. Other names that sound is Javi Martinez, Athletic, and Alberto Aquilani of Roma.

Furthermore, Benitez has called on club owners to make another effort to be armed Javier Mascherano (claimed by the Barca), to renew his contract, as was the captain Gerrard, in order to maintain the strength of the heart field.

Real Madrid, for cash, expected to close soon leaving the players with whom they do not have the technical, Manuel Pellegrini: Robben, Huntelaar, M.Diarra, Van der Vaart, and Heinze Negredo. Because after the signing of Xabi Alonso, Florentino Perez is still expected to sign two more reinforcements

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I make that just over £30 mill, which doesn't strike me as enough. If this report is true, maybe Xabi's been correctly reported as saying to Rafa behind the scenes that he defo wants to go?

according to the report the deal must include a Madrid player from their first team.. Sneijder it is then

*crosses fingers*

£30 mill.and the right player would work for me. Whether that player is Sneijder, I'm less convinced - good player, but I'm not sure he'll be a good fit (yet) in Rafa's system.

BTW how's Xabi gonna feel, should he still be at Real, if Rafa fetches up there one day? 😉

Perhaps this is why Xabi is being very careful with what he says in public...

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If that's agreed today it looks like there was some truth in the clause rumour with Sociedad

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

He's the most almighty twat, but if we got Robben in we'd be awesome.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If we get anything over 20m and Sneijder i'd be delighted.
Sneijder may not be as much of a playmaker as Xabi but he's as equally talented. I think of him as a scholes type player, though he can play wide. He was a real 'midfield general' in his days at Ajax and whilst not as classy looking as Xabi will probably get more goals and assists though we'd probably have to tweak the system a bit as he's not a holding midfielder. Masher would probably have to hold a little more. Also Dutch players, on the whole, do tend to do well in the English league.
My only concern with bringing him in is we'd lose some height from set pieces. Not that Xabi was particularly great, but if we're taking Xabi and say Riera out, and bringing in Sneijder and say Silva, that's two 6 footers you're losing, for two 5foot 5ish players. In the English league, against the likes of Stoke, Everton, or indeed Chelsea as we found not in the CL 1st leg last year, that can prove very costly.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

How much were you expecting?

35M euros is a decent fee by anyone's standards.

Real Madrid are a law unto themselves.

[/quote]Update your sig for fuck sake. You need to add Johnson at least and remove Xabi. Be a devil and put insua and silva in.....maybe sneider too.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

well no surprises that alonso is off, I hope when he is gone there isn't revisionist rubbish lest we forget he (xabi) was our player of the season in a squad that contains gerrard and torres.

It's not about the money, there are some things money can't buy.

Like many fans I'd (stupidly) hoped we could hold on to Xabi.
I really wanted to retain the spine of last season's side, felt we'd hit on a formation and attitude that could carry us to the title in 2010. I suppose I'm disappointed that he wanted to leave and we let him.

Look at what Ibrahimovic went for today.
This summer has exploded all that went before in terms of transfers and money. When you look at what United have pocketed this summer, and see they are still hugely weakened, it puts it into perspective.

30 million, 35 million whatever, it's fuck all when you look at it in the new terms Real have set for transfers.

Anyway, I'll get over it... I need a new avatar.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Good player. Gone.

I hope we replace him with top-quality, but in the current market conditions i doubt that. But that is what Rafa wanted, full control over transfers, now he has got it and he has to play it....strictly no whinging please

asking again to try my luck....Can anyone help me with a video that was about a couple of years back?

I think the video was titled "Pass Master", with the song "i predict a riot..." in the background. It was a two minutes compilation of his performance against spurs in his very first season. I was practically drooling after that match...
