The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Barry Ferguson's available on the cheap

He can play that metronomic role, and certainly has an excellent passing range. Would be a decent stopgap.

I think I'd rather get Senna from Villareal as a stop gap if we can't find anything else.

Model professional? Wasn't he banned from the Scotland squad and stripped of the armband by Rangers because of a "drinking incident" recently?

Sarcasm's so difficult to understand.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Fucking hell - I can't believe this thread is so big - I mean when we went through that summer where SG was going to leave I don't think the thread got bigger than 60-70 posts !!!!

I think we should all accept he is off and that whatever we end up with - we should go for someone physically strong and faster than Xabi and someone who can at the very least do the simple passes consistently - that will be enough. I am using the games against Chelsea as the main standard of midfield opposition we should try and compete against as their midfield managed to out do us in the CL games.

Moron

Well it started off with just Xabi leaving posts but then in an effort to conserve white space any topic with the word Xabi or Alonso in it was melded into this topic, and that was followed by any LFC related post - not only from this forum but from any and all forums ... things just snowballed from there until this Black Hole of a Xabi thread now threatens all humanity with obliteration and oblivion.

Oh and just as an after thought , nice of Xabi to give a bit of a passing thought to the fans who backed him last year, even if it does sound like it was for his own good.

regards

In fairness, it would be downright moronic for Xabi to claim he doesn't want to be here when there's no guarantee of him leaving. He is a model professional, and thus far has been just that - professional.

Is it what Jamie Carragher would have done? Of course not, but we can't expect that from every one of our players. Or even Steven Gerrard, once upon a time.

I think i'll use it every time it's called for, it is a brilliant picture.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Re Barry Ferguson.

Is it Birmingham that bought him for something like 1.2M this week? I've missed most football news, so I'm a bit behind the times on this one.

If so, that's a great bit of business. Don't be put off by one failed spell at Blackburn (it certainly doesn't help foster spirit at a new club when you start riding your captain's missus) cos Ferguson's a very good footballer.

He stood out like a sore thumb for Rangers for years, he was Scotland's only footballer worth talking about for a 4/5 year spell, and for that price is a fantastic bit of business.

Despite his obvious allegainces, I never disliked Ferguson, probably because he was the only player in many Old Firm games actually worth watching. He's a proper footballer, and if they get him fit and get his head right - Brum have a fantastic deal on their hands.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

McLeish is building a pretty solide side, and if anyone can get the best out of Ferguson its him. Great piece of business.

All three newly promoted teams have done some good signings and I dont see a stand out obvious relegation candidate. It will be close and exciting at the bottom half of the table.

All 3 sides have a striker that can fire them to safty, if they find their feet in the PL;
Ebanks-Blake
Benitez
Fletcher

Mirror reporting today that Real are to up their bid 32m. A mate texted me last night with the same figure having heard it elsewhere.

If we have to sell him, then yes it will.

Oasis's Noel Gallagher does not want Chelsea captain John Terry at his beloved Manchester City. "He's got funny eyes and he's a cry baby," he said. (Daily Mirror)

Heh. Nice!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

This must be the ultimate Tribal Football non-story. Hilarious:

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso failed to invite manager Rafa Benitez to his wedding last week.

AS says Xabi did not invite his manager in a sure sign their relationship has not recovered after last summer's on-off move to Juventus.

The Liverpool manager did congratulate Xabi by SMS, which was their last communication as Real Madrid step up their bid for the player.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Anybody has that old compilation of Xabi Alonso against Spurs in his very first season? If i remember right the song in the compilation was "i predict a riot...."

I absolutely loved that compilation. But i can't find it in youtube any more.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

From all the guff that i am reading from various website we are asking for 35millon. So is it 35mill Euros or 35mill pounds. I know the rate is only about 1.157 pounds to the euro but that can make about 5mill difference. So what are we asking for 35mill euros or 35mill pounds.
