The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I am getting tired of this. I repeat if Man U can say no negotiation for CR's fee and held on to him for another year, so can we. Period.
I'm concerned that if we don't sell him this summer, when his value is at the highest it's been whilst he's been with us - He might have another mediocre season again next season, and his value plummets back down to 10-15mill :s

I don't see 27M+ as a bad deal. Considering we were asking 18M for him last season. Weren't Roma asking 18M for Aquilani ? If so then buy him (or a any other damn good replacement) at anything below that and we've made 10M+ to add to our David Silva kitty. Would I take Sneijder / Aquilani / Defour and then have to the money to bring Silva in, for Xabi ? Damn right I would.

We only paid 10M for Xabi from Sociedad so a 17M+ profit is good going even if the market has rocketed skyward this year, and don't forget it's only 4 or 5 teams that can afford those stratospheric fees, no other team is anywhere near that level - would Juve pay 27M for him ? Not in our lifetime.
Last year was last year, we're not selling him to Juve this time and what we paid for him is totally irrelevant.

I've always maintained that we're undervaluing Xabi (last summer was ridiculous) and now is no different. Why should we accept a deal that is merely reasonable? He may not be Gerrard or Torres to us, but he's still one of our key players, we're a big club in our own right and we shouldn't have to bend over for anyone else.

Did Utd consider that well, Ronaldo hadn't been *quite* as good as he was in 07/08, that they only paid 13M and that 50M wouldn't be a bad deal? No. The price was 80M and that's that. Don't like it? Good luck finding someone else.

I've done this time and time again, but let's review the central midfielders Real have bought over the last few years.

M.Diarra - Hilariously overpriced at €26M and not particularly good.

L.Diarra - £20M for a player that was traded about the Premiership for next to nothing and right now, not as good as he's made out to be on here. I wonder why Pompey's management didn't consider what they paid for him and what was reasonable?

Gago - "The New Redondo" cost them in excess of €20M and probably will lose his place to Alonso. Right now, he can only dream of getting to Xabi's level.

Sneijder - €27M from Ajax who are nothing these days.

They paid through the nose for all of those players, certainly not getting value for money, yet suddenly people think we should be giving it to them. And this after they've just spent 200M. So everybody gets some of that Real Madrid generosity, but us... right?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Fucking, is right lad. Finally somebody talking some sense.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Alonso's protracted departure from Anfield is still far from finalised with Madrid yet to come close to matching Liverpool's valuation. It remains likely that the midfielder will have to hand in a transfer request to force through the move.

Benitez, meanwhile, is said to be interested in Marseille midfielder Lorit Cana as well with Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani. The Mirror says that the £16m-valued '25 year old Italy international is a similar ball-playing midfielder to Alonso, and is seen as many as an ideal replacement'.

Aquilani is a sick-note, in Serie A no less.
Cana is brutal. He and Mascher will scare the shit out of anyone, including Lucas.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Just having a brief look through a few pages in this thread.

Alot of people rightfully suggest we will miss Alonso's ability to work the play through phases and bring other players into play. However not many people seem to value Alonso's work off the ball. Hes very clever, presses well and is underestimated when it comes to winning the ball.

Its going to be very difficult to find a playmaker type who can also compare with Xabi in the defensive side of the game.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Don't forget the amount of players he gets sent off as well 🙂

Good post Keniget, although I reckon all the players you mention were over-priced, I'd rather have Alonso than any of them.

On the money as per usual. People seem to under valuing Xabi's importance to the team aswel. We shouldn't sell unless we get well paid. 26 million is a decent price but Madrid have splashed more in the past on inferior midfield players. So why settle.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

This is the article put through the google translator.
It doesn't seem that it has anything new to add. In fact all it does is quote from stories in the English press.

In England take for granted that the signing of Xabi Alonso will be closed this week
Benitez already looking for his replacement and is preferred to David Silva near Madrid paid 35 million euros

The 'soap opera' Xabi Alonso seems to end. After the tug of war in the negotiations between Real Madrid and Liverpool, both clubs could reach an agreement by the midfielder at the end of this week.

According to the "Daily Telegraph" at Anfield and are preparing for the departure of Xabi Alonso. The player's desire to dress in white next season and juicy that the amount may be paid for his Liverpool transfer, seem to have done to convince Benitez to allow his departure.

As pointed "The Times" on Tuesday, the coach 'red' would be willing to discard the Spanish international for a little over 35 million.

The coach would be Spanish and exploring the market to find a substitute to San Sebastian. Among these candidates, the name of David Silva is the one that sounds more strongly. In addition, the newspaper notes that the English would have dismissed coach madrileño enter into Dutch Wesley Sneijder in the operation, as a measure rejecting merengue to lower the transfer.

So we've rejected the meringue that is Sneijder. I would have taken him with 20 mill.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't understand how Silva will replace Alonso, they don't play in the same position.
Unless as suggested Lucas plays more, which will be a piss take.

liverpool should force xabi to hand in a transfer request if he wants out, to show in no uncertain terms xabi forced us to sell.
