I hate any man who turns his back on LFC.
Yes, me too. He's been there from the start of Rafa's reign and played a major part in Istanbul therefore this is particularly galling.

Do you take every comment ever made on here as heartfelt and fact, Wilko?

If Rafa pays 35 mill for Silva I'll jump out the window.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Marca are shameless. They put out self-serving rumours, wait for the English press to report them as fact, then quote the English press! It's the journalistic equivalent of drinking your own pee!

I don't understand how Silva will replace Alonso, they don't play in the same position.
Unless as suggested Lucas plays more, which will be a piss take.
I don't know, I guess it's about percentages. If there's no real quality CM available there's no point spunking daft money on a half decent one. So while there's a top quality attacker available in a role we do also need to strengthen, we may aswell make that the priority. Midfield can be addressed later, or as mentioned in the form of either an up and coming player or an experienced stop gap like Senna.

Agreed. let me just add that some of the English press is acting similarly.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It's not really a 4-2-3-1 though is it... it'd have to be more of a 4-3-3.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if alonso does go and rafa decideds to replace him with a central midfielder I hope he goes for an attacking central midfielder rather than one whose specialty is passing because I don't think we'll get one that comes close to xabi. dafour is a good shout.
Actually I would prefer us, as Spidey says, to go 4-1-1-3-1 as it were. With a more attacking midfielder which any of Sneidjer / Dafour or almost any of the others linked to us, all the way through to Cattermole, are. Xabi often sits 10 yds too deep for my liking.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Heh so that'd leave poor Masher on his own in the centre of the park "Errr... guys? A little help?"...

Yeah, I'm quite happy for us to bring in a more attacking midfielder as well. I always said the same sort of thing when advocating bringing in Diego or someone like him over the last year or two or three, but it was always as another posshibility and never at the expense of Xabi *wipes away tear*.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Spanish newspaper AS has claimed that Real Madrid have taken the decision to postpone negotiations with Liverpool over central midfielder Xabi Alonso in order to sell off a number of squad players to fund the move.

The Spanish giants are also hoping that by delaying the move for up to 10 days they may be able to force Liverpool to sell Alonso for a lower fee. Real Madrid’s latest offer was 27 million euros and the Merseyside giants are holding out for closer to 40 million euros.

Xabi Alonso joins up with the Liverpool squad for pre-season training on Sunday and reports in Spain claim that the central midfielder will signal his intention to leave Anfield in a face-to-face meeting with Rafa Benitez.

There are however conflicting reports in fellow Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo. The Barcelona-based newspaper claims Real Madrid could wrap up a deal for Alonso for a fee between 35 and 37 million euros this weekend.

El Mundo Deportivo suggest the deal could involve a player swap with either Alvaro Negredo or Wesley Sneijder moving to Liverpool.

They also claim that Alonso will not publicly come out and say he wants to leave Liverpool as the negotiations between the two clubs are very “harsh†and he fears he could still be at Anfield next season and does not want to face the wrath of the fans Anita.

AS are the mouthpiece for Madrid.
Have they sussed out that Rafa is playing a game, and banking on Xabi moving to fund players he wants?

Oh and just as an after thought , nice of Xabi to give a bit of a passing thought to the fans who backed him last year, even if it does sound like it was for his own good.

the fans were definately behind xabi when it was patently obvious rafa wanted rid but you can never bet on a player making a life decision based on fans.

They're just taking the piss I think Vlad. When Perez came in and looked at the books beforehand, he forecast he could spend 200mill this summer, they're well inside that. It makes me laugh the way they try and plead poverty considering they've broken the world transfer record twice this summer. They could easily spunk £30mill on Alonso if we were another club and they thought he was worth it.

I do agree with them on one point though - he's not exactly marketable. He's not model looking (apart from to one dopey member of this forum) and he's never likely to be in the running for any of the big awards - So they're gonna struggle to market him and make money off him. They would have to buy him for footballing reasons.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I hope rather has told alonso in no uncertain terms that he wont be allowed to leave unless real meet our valueation, transfer request or not.

Harsh on both counts there Mors.
Anita is no dope.
Xabi is hot.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The longer this drags on the more difficult it will be for us to get a suitable replacement. I want Xabi to stay, but its time for clarity. If you want to go Xabi then fair enough, off you go, but at our valuation not Real Madrid's or your valuation. Otherwise you stay. If you want to stay then great.

Preseason has already started and any replacements need to be here very soon, to give them a period to settle in.

They have a genuine problem in that they only got loans for 120m and the rest was to be made up from sales. They've spent the 120m cash and now need to raise more from sales. Alas, the dutch crew are being less than compliant when it comes to buggering off.

Marca again:

IT WORRIES MORE TO RAISE TO HIM THE PAY TO HIM MASCHERANO
Benítez does not count on Xabi Alonso
It only is to hope that Xabi Alonso and Benítez they see Sunday and they reach an agreement.
ULISES SÃNCHEZ-FLOR. Madrid 16/07/09 - 11:27 .
In spite of which it can say of doors for outside and before mass media, the certain thing is that Rafa Benítez does not count on Xabi Alonso. An untouchable nor emblematic player does not consider him. The test is that it finishes giving the approval to the renovation of Gerrard, the captain, and is going to do the same with Mascherano. By the Argentinean they have arrived several supplies this summer and in the Liverpool one is going away to deliver the attack to improve the contract to him. The continuity wants to make sure, for many years, of these two players, with whom it maintains a dialogue constant. In the Liverpool the exit of Alonso like a real option is valued. To transfer to him would mean to enter a money that would help to continue financing the project. In fact, this Wednesday scored in England that the dream of Benítez is to clock on and off to David Silva and that with the money of donostiarra would go to by the end of the Valencia. It only is to hope that Xabi Alonso and Benítez they see Sunday and they reach an agreement.

Big bad Rafa is forcing Xabi out by not offering him a new contract, he's only pretending he doesn't want to sell so he can get more money to buy Silva.

Phase I of Madrid's attempt to get the fans on Xabi's side in case he has to put in a transfer request (because Rafa made him do it).

Some seem to think he could play deep like Xabi does... his best position is obviously in the free role which would force Gerrard to drop back.

He's a good player but I don't really like moving Gerrard out of that free role. If Xabi goes I hope we go the route of signing a cheaper centre midfielder to fill his spot and then spending the rest on another attacking threat.
