We should buy Xavi.

He's a good player.

Yeah he's decentish.

He is, though admitedly what I've seen of him (or what I've always noticed) is his work around the penalty area, with probing passes and good link up play.

How solid is he in midfield?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

What pisses me off is that Real Madrid are quite happy to meet every other clubs valuation but when it comes to us they try and fuck us over.

They run a close second to the scum for me.

Nunez...what cunts they are.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

To play devil's advocate for a minute, their past dealings with us may have given them reason to suppose LFC would be willing to take it up the tradesmen's entrance from them over transfers. Unfortunately for them, we're now under new management which is made of sterner stuff. Oh dear how sad never mind.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't see buy this 'lack of respect' their showing us, which everyone else seems to.

They've been paying top end fees for the best players in the world, yeah, but it's not like their throwing money around aimlessly. Kaka and Ronaldo are hugely talented players and they've paid a premium, but they would have taken into account both their marketability and their talent.  And people on here thought Benzema may have gone for more.

I don't particularly like Real Madrid, but I accept that they don't have unlimited funds, and that it's just within their interests to broker a good deal as it is ours. The way they conducted themselves over the prolonged Ronaldo transfer was much worse, IMO.

I don't blame them for trying, but hopefully we stick to our guns and demand the £35M he's worth to us.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Is it really that they just view Liverpool as a soft touch or is it more a case of Xabi not being a glamourous Galactico signing?

If they were pursuing Gerrard for example would they not be a lot more aggressive in their approach as they were with Ronaldo and others?

It's many things I'm sure.

Alonso was an 18m player last year.
Perez is on record as saying he doesn't think he should have to pay big fees for Spaniards?!?!?
They are low on cash having spent all the loan money.
Alonso is a footballing buy not a football+commercial buy.
Alonso is a Valdano pick not a Perez pick.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If Rick Parry was still here, Xabi wou;d've been sold by now. I can feel it in me bones you guys!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't think they see us as a soft touch, at least not any more.

For all his talent, Alonso isn't in the same bracket as Ronaldo, Gerrard, Kaka, both in terms of marketing and his role within the side. Although we maybe struggling to think of replacements if he goes, I reckon Real Madrid have already got such talent in their side, they won't be too disheartened turning towards their second choice target.

Alonso would be the icing on their cake this summer but he's a crucial ingredient to Liverpool.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

We were so close to getting back to the top last season, and so well-placed to do so next season. These player/agent machinations are, from a fan's point of view, unforgiveable. It's worse than Owen.

Not when he's under contract for another three seasons, no.

It's the deal that he signed.
Heh, it's the deal he signed?

We sold Sissoko after he signed a new five year deal. What about about that deal?

Alonso had four years left on his deal when Rafa tried to sell him last year. It was all okay to ignore the deal then, wasn't it?

We did this earlier on in the thread. Loyalty is a two way street. It's hypocritical in the extreme to state that loyalty only has to be maintained as long as it suits the club.
People's circumstances change in life. Players are no different to anyone else. If you had a 5 year contract as an electrician working on an oil-rig and suddenly decided you had had enough would you not be entitled to resign and move elsewhere ? If the company decided they didn't need you would they have the right to dismiss you with reasonable compensation ?

In both cases the answer is Yes.

Clubs aren't loyal to players unless it suits them. Same goes for players, it's the way of the world not just football. Nothing wrong with Xabi deciding he wants to move on - we just have to deal with it, get a good price for him and buy in a great replacement - which is where our focus should be now.
I've had to sign non-compete agreements with both of the companies that I've worked for in the past 10 years, Froggie.

So, no, I can't just quit and go work anywhere I want to. Unless my current employer allows me to do so.

Nor can Xabi.

He would be perfect for them. He would keep the midfield ticking over and dictate the tempo and state of play. He could feed Ronaldo, Kaka and rely on Diarra to provide the pace and energy.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Alonso deal looks unlikely - Balague

Guillem Balague feels Liverpool have priced Xabi Alonso out of a move to Real Madrid and also expects Ruud van Nistelrooy to stay in Spain.

The Spanish giants have been splashing the cash this summer with high-profile names such as Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema arriving at the Bernabeu in big money moves.

Liverpool's Spanish central midfielder Alonso is thought to be the next name on the shopping list of Real president Florentino Perez, but the Reds' reported price tag is thought to be a stumbling block in the move.

Sky Sports' Spanish expert Guillem Balague has close contacts within both camps and says although Liverpool would like a decision to be made quickly, the two clubs are currently far away from concluding a deal.

"Real will be spending more," Balague told Sky Sports News.

"The problem is that Florentino Perez would like at least four or five of his players to be sold before buying anybody else.

"At the other end you've got Liverpool, who maybe want to sell, but they want about 35million euros. Perez said there's no chance that amount of money will be spent on Xabi Alonso.

"Everybody at Liverpool would like everything to be sorted by Sunday when Alonso joins up with the squad - so at the moment both parties are at such a big distance.

"It seems at the moment that it's not going to happen, but you never know."

A further stumbling block appears to be a sell-on clause that the Reds agreed with Alonso's previous club Real Sociedad when they signed the Spaniard in the summer of 2004.

It is believed that Liverpool would need to make a payment to Sociedad if Alonso is sold before July 18, but Balague insists the Reds are nevertheless keen to settle the matter quickly.

"That is part of what's happening," Balague said of the sell-on clause.

"What's more important is the fact that Real Madrid felt they were insulted by the figure quoted for Xabi Alonso.

"On the other hand, Rafael Benitez logically wants everything sorted by the time Alonso joins up with the squad.

"Those are the dates, but any club can sign up until the end of August. The manager would like it sorted soon - and that's also what Xabi Alonso would like as well."

While Alonso could be on his way to Spain, Real striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu with Blackburn and Lyon thought to be in the hunt for the Dutchman.

However, Balague is convinced that Van Nistelrooy, who is back in training after a long term injury, is part of coach Manuel Pellegrini's plans for the forthcoming campaign.

"I think he will stay," Balague said.

"Pellegrini spoke very highly of what they've got as strikers and he mentioned Van Nistelrooy in the same breath as Gonzalo Higuain, Raul and Benzema.

"That means that those will be the four strikers, Ruud included. I think the intention is to keep him for now."

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'm so sick of Balague these days. Covering himself for every outcome.

Why? Everyone keeps banging on about how Rafa has sold most of the players he bought for a profit so why would Parry have sold him for a reduced fee?

Xabi's replacement

If it happens :

The men who could replace Xabi Alonso at Liverpool

Liverpool will permit Xabi Alonso to leave if he publicly expresses his desire to join Real Madrid and it remains to be seen whether or not Rafael Benitez will seek out a like-for-like replacement for the stylish Spanish midfielder.

The great irony is that Benitez would now actually love to keep Xabi Alonso, despite trying to sell him last summer in an attempt to fund a move for Gareth Barry. With Barry joining Manchester City, Benitez is forced to look elsewhere to boost his side's title prospects.

If the Liverpool manager is shrewd he could re-invest the proposed fee of about £32 million in a midfield replacement and other potential targets. Here are five men who might be considered as replacements for Alonso in Liverpool's engine room next season:

Wesley Sneijder
Alonso's likely arrival at the Bernabeu may well see Sneijder nudged towards the exit door. Florentino Perez is looking to offload some of Real's Dutch contingent, including Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart and Royston Drenthe. Sneijder is an excellent ball player, but more mobile and adventurous than Alonso, whilst having an eye for a goal. The Dutchman's versatility would appeal to Benitez who is no stranger to rotating his side.

Michael Johnson
He is Manchester City's forgotten midfield man thanks to injury but remains one of English football's brightest prospects. Benitez is reportedly a fan and there have been quiet comparisons between Johnson and Steven Gerrard in terms of their athleticism and all-round ability. Johnson may be considered a risk, but if he is still available for the reported £8 million Newcastle were prepared to pay for him in January, he could prove a snip. Equally important is the fact that this would release further funds for Benitez to put towards another major transfer target, ie David Silva.

Sulley Muntari
The Ghanaian was linked to Liverpool during his stint at Portsmouth and still has many admirers in the Premier League. Athletic, committed and tenacious, Muntari doesn't possess Alonso's range of passing but is certainly an effective midfield enforcer. However, it remains to be seen if he could be prised away from Jose Mourinho's clutches.

Steven Defour
Whilst he appears to be one of Everton's main transfer targets this summer, it wouldn't be the first time Benitez has hijacked a move by the Toffees - Mohamed Sissoko, anyone? Defour was Mouraine Fellaini's midfield partner at Standard Liege. Considered the golden boy of Belgian football, Defour has long been linked with a transfer to either La Liga or the Premier League and, at the age of 21, represents a good investment. He is a creative playmaker with an impressive work rate and therefore a potential fan favourite at Anfield.

Miguel Veloso
The Portuguese midfielder has been looked at by Arsenal, Manchester United and Bolton in the past, but no move has yet materialised for the 23-year-old. Veloso is a youthful yet experienced defensive midfielder who can also provide cover at centre back. He is from the 'Michael Carrick' mould of holding midfielders, with good positional sense and an eye for a pass.

Sneijder please. Actually if you give us all four of your Dutch players I'd be happy to take them all off your hands as a straight swop !

I have non compete agreements in all my staff's employment contracts - however in effect it's almost impossible to stop them leaving & acting as 'consultants' if they so wished. Non-compete clauses are not global so moving from the UK to Spain for example wouldn't apply.

Off topic 😉

Re: Xabi's replacement

I wouldn't mind if we got Scotty Parker. I think he is better than Barry anyway.

If we are looking for a like for like replacement, it has to be Veloso. Whatever happened to Roman Riquelme? He can out-xabi our Alonso.

It would be good to have someone with a left peg though, in general.
