The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'm resigned to losing both Xabi and Mascher, and tbh it's got to the stage where in which i just hope we at least do it on our terms. Sell Xabi this summer (use the money for 1-2 replacements) and get Mascher to stay on for one more season, and then flog him too.

Fuck them if they don't want to stay and try to get in some players that do please Rafa.
Lay off Masch, we can't lump him in with Xabi yet. As far as I know he has never said that he was unhappy here or that he'd like a move away (or even a nod to another team), it was his agent making all the noise a few weeks ago. Alonso has been evasive all summer, and it has always looked like he wanted the move.

Javi Martinez and a £20m attacking player.

20 mill gets you a santa cruz.

you reckon martinez for 10 - 15 mill in this market? not a chance.

what's in the echo - that he wants to leave or that we've sold him?

he could feasibly stay if madrid don't cough up, but this thread assumes he's leaving for just under rafa's valuation.

True, but I think Real will pay 30+million. I wonder how much we have left fund wise, call it £5 million, plus the Alonso money makes it £35 million, thats a decent amount but losing a top class player means needing a good enough replacement. Im not sure if we have enough for a good replacement and a good attacking player.

we will also get shafted, as every club will know we have a lot of money and a desperate need for a replacement. that is why some kind of part swap deal is essential, in my eyes.

Definately agree, im worried about losing him and the downsize in class in the midfield. I dont think Lucas or Spearing are anywhere near good enough to fill the void.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

so there's nothing new here than in the other 10 alonso threads then.

thanks skully but i'm going back to your augero thread.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

You're threads making Rafa look a cunt with the title of the thread below this one.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I just dont get it. Why would anyone want to leave LFC right now. We have the best shot at the title right now.
And Xabi has lived in the city. He has seen Istanbul and its aftermath. He has seen us celebrate. He knows how much we want the league. And he also knows that if we win the league, people will tell stories of this team for ages. He can then leave a hero. He now has an opportunity to be part of something truly special. Be revered and worshipped at a level which he will not receive at Madrid even if they win the quadruple.

Maybe I am thinking too much like a fan.

We always knew he was going to go back. Maybe he thinks now is his last chance to go back to one of the top 2.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Inler seems like he might be the most likely candidate at the moment.

I'm still on board with forcing Xabi to stay but Inler and someone like Silva we might end up better off.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

TOM HUDDLESTONE CAN SUCK THE BACK OF MY BALLS THE USELESS CUNT.

If we replace Alonso with that fucking tube, I'll break the internet with my tears.

Not when he's under contract for another three seasons, no.

It's the deal that he signed.
Heh, it's the deal he signed?

We sold Sissoko after he signed a new five year deal. What about about that deal?

Alonso had four years left on his deal when Rafa tried to sell him last year. It was all okay to ignore the deal then, wasn't it?

We did this earlier on in the thread. Loyalty is a two way street. It's hypocritical in the extreme to state that loyalty only has to be maintained as long as it suits the club.
People's circumstances change in life. Players are no different to anyone else. If you had a 5 year contract as an electrician working on an oil-rig and suddenly decided you had had enough would you not be entitled to resign and move elsewhere ? If the company decided they didn't need you would they have the right to dismiss you with reasonable compensation ?

In both cases the answer is Yes.

Clubs aren't loyal to players unless it suits them. Same goes for players, it's the way of the world not just football. Nothing wrong with Xabi deciding he wants to move on - we just have to deal with it, get a good price for him and buy in a great replacement - which is where our focus should be now.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'd get Sneijder, Robben or VdV included in the deal. Then concentrate on Xabis replacement.
Defour
Martinez
Cambiasso
That would be my shortlist.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I wouldn't mind Robber and Sneijder.

Sneijder, not in the same class as Alonso, but a decent replacement nevertheless.

Good dribbler, and gives us options at set pieces.

Robben - fitness is the issue here - but one hell of a footballer when he plays.

Combine them with Babel and Kuijt - they all seem to have a good understanding between one another at Dutch NT level...

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The Alonso story seems to inspire the most stunning illogicality. In today's Mirror, for example:

Xabi Alonso will force showdown talks over his future, after failing to be convinced he is wanted at Anfield.
[...] But Benitez put a £35million asking price on his head when Real Madrid made an enquiry at the start of this summer, and that has persuaded the midfielder his future lies elsewhere.
[...] Alonso wants to move following his two frustrating summers, and he believes the price set it too high.

I mean: at least TRY to be consistent! Alonso is going because being called part of the spine of the team makes him feel peripheral? And Rafa saying he's not for sale, or only for sale at a big price, is betrayal? And he'd feel more wanted if Rafa had asked for much less? Good gawd, Maddock!

Footballers are paid such huge sums of money it makes them different to normal workers. Poor guy earning 70k/week doesn't get to play where he wants boohoo.

Increased player power is a shit thing in football and if no one stands firm against it then it will only increase.

We have no obligation to let Alonso go even if he wants to.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'd take Robben and £18-20M.

They get paid far less than top earners at Wall Street for example - do you think those guys would stand for anyone boo-hoo'ing them about what they can or can't do?

Don't be so ridiculous.

It may be ridiculous but I think footballers at top level should waive some of their 'rights' because they earn so much money playing football.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

This thread's just spinning around in circles.

And I think people are preparing themselves for Alonso's departure by finding reasons to dislike him. Reasons which aren't really there.

It is ridiculous. They have gotten to where they are with their own talent and hard work - why should they apologize to anyone?

Would you suggest that other people making money out of football "waive their rights" (whatever that means) also?

No you wouldn't because it's impractical, unrealistic and fucking stupid.
