Looks like he is going according to the echo....

and Tom Huddlestone (so I hear) probably be on his way in...

could be a decent bit of business.. and probably an ideal replacement for Alonso...

He has a decent passing range and a powerful strike on him that has brought him a few long range goals from midfield for spurs
Not the same type of player as Xabi and not a like for like replacement, but I think he has some potential.
I don't know why , but Ray Kennedy keeps popping into my head when I see Huddlestone. He is certainly better than Lucas

regards

Maybe peeps are misinterpretting what I meant lol. Okay I know I said Ideal replacement... probably an oversight on my behalf.. But given what is available, he probably is for the time being.. However he is more in the carrick mold than Alonso I guess...

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I haven't seen much of him but he's never looked convincing.

Everybody's known that Spurs lack steal in their midfield, and for someone of his size there's just no excuse for getting involved.

Spurs players don't come cheap, either. I really hope this isn't true.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Huddlestone would be ok as a squad option though, but if we're gonna lose Alonso and get mega bucks for it, I'd rather see us spend big and spend well. Say we get £30m for Xabi, what's wrong with splitting that on an attacker and a midfielder?

I hope we don't spunk in the region of £10m on Huddlestone. Carrick is the only player around I can think of who's similar to Alonso 🙁

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

As he lost that weight?

He used to be chubby as

Sell him for 27m and buy sneidjer and Martinez
madrid will ask for 20 mill for sneidjer, and they'd get it. same for martinez.

i still wouldn't be surprised if alonso ended up staying another season, due to neither club backing down over his value.

i hope real just put the 35 mill on the table now so we can get on with rebuilding the team. 35 mill to spend used to be a mouth watering prospect. not so much anymore.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

We should be looking for 30m + a player for him, if we do sell him.

Still keeping up the hope he is not wanting to go though!!!!!

*Fingers Crossed*

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Huddlestone for Xabi
Cattermole for Mascher

*** GULP ****

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I know they'd never sell to us but Arteta would be a nice replacement for Alonso. He certainly has the passing range and consistently scores goals from midfield.

When he played at Rangers, the holding role (played by Barry Ferguson) was the position he coveted. Moyes has never really played him there consistently, but he would be a very decent shout.

As you say, not going to happen though.

Ray Kennedy, Vlad??!!  Shoulda gone to Specsavers. 😉

I liked the look of Huddlestone too when he first came into their side, but he's failed to kick on from that promising start.  At some point "potential" becomes another word for "underachievement" and Huddlestone is pretty darn close to that now, if indeed he hasn't got there already.  I think he has more raw talent than Lucas but, when you look at our record when Lucas has played, I'm far from convinced Huddlestone's actually done his team more good.  The player he reminds me of is Molby on a bad day, of which the Great Dane actually had his fair share, especially when we tried to turn him into a libero - again something that's been tried with Huddlestone.

Thumbs down from me, I'm afraid, particularly if Xabi does leave, 'coz then we really won't have the time to wait for Huddlestone to come good.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'd rather Cattermole than Huddlestone. Not that I dislike Huddlestone, I don't, but Cattermole has the grit and determination we need throughout the team. We still need better as a replacement for Xabi though.

How long has Arteta got left on his contract ? If it's run down I wouldn't dismiss him making the long walk across Stanley.

It was rumoured a while back and I think he and us both ruled it out.

Real should buy Arteta. He'd be cheaper and he'd probably suit them better anyway.

I'm on the Echo's website, reading the story and the reaction by some of the folks logged on...

What's all this about Rafa not allowing Xabi to be with his wife for the birth of his child? IS that true?

You mean his girlfriend a season ago? We had a key match, Alonso wasn't sure when she was having it, Rafa waited, Xabi stayed, Rafa had to make changes late on so wasn't very happy. I still don't see why that became SUCH a big debating point.

So rafa didn't say "no" as much as Xabi left it too late to give him an actual date and then had to stay with the team..? Or did Rafa begrudgingly let him go at the last seond?

And which game was it, do you remember?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It was an away European game, and Xabi never travelled. Rumour has it Rafa told him to travel regardless, but Xabi just never showed up for the coach/plane. Hence the Mexican.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Don't mind Huddlestone when he has the ball, creative, plays a nice through ball, good passing range. When he doesn't have the ball, he lumbers round a midfield like Gentle Ben looking for picnic scraps.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If he wasn't English, he wouldn't be linked.

If we sign anyone else this summer, they will be English i reckon, unless it's a marquee one.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Some goon on Talksport said earlier that a Xabi deal is close with Sneijder (and maybe Van Der Vaart) coming the other way.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If we have to drop Gerrard down to central midfield, Van der Vaart would be excellent.

this time last year sneijder would've been more valuable than alonso, so in that context it's a good deal.

i don't actually know that much about him though - where would we fit him in our team? he's more of an attacking player, right?

Sneijder is a classy player, If Alonso was to go I would love him to come here. Masher would hold and Sneijder would pass the ball. Doubt he could control the midfield like Xabi can but as replacements go he'd be very near the top of my list.

VDV could play a few positions for us but his favourite position would be Gerrards role so thats a non starter. Suppose he could play left of Torres??

As others have said, swap deal rarely happen.

i wouldn't rule it out in this case. buying a replacement for xabi in this market will be a massive hassle, and real are well-stocked with quality players they seem to undervalue. i think it's fair to say sneijder's as talented a player as alonso, and also that we'll struggle to find a like-for-like replacement, so this kind of swap makes sense to me.
