The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

rafa could tell alonso that even if he submits a transfer request he wont be allowed to leave.
I think its safe to say alonso wont dare put in substandard peformances (as he sulks) in world cup year.

Our title changes are pretty much gone if Xabi goes. There are no players who are Xabi's level or even close to him available at the moment. Everyone has seen how poor our playmaking is when Alonso does not play.
[/quote]

He's a class player but our title hopes dont rest that heavily on him, tbe key is keeping torres and gerrard fit. united had a fairly average central midfield last year and won the league.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If Real won't up their bid to 35 mill, then fuck'em.

He has 3 years left on his contract, and we won't sell him on the cheap just because it suits everyone else.
We controll the situation and everything in this transfer.

35 mill or nothing, their call..

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

let's cut this 'nice club' shit ...

xabi wants to leave? ok, you can.

if they don't give us 35 mill you stay. if you play like shit, you're dropped and goodbye world cup dreams.

one way or another, we should do the screwing - not madrid.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I really don't want to see us buckle under the pressure on this one. We are in a strong position and like Bayern, Sevilla, Lyon... if we are to lose one of our key assets, I want us to rape the buying club on the fee.

I'll be gutted if / when Xabi goes. He's one of my favourite players, I think he's massively important to the team and will be difficult to replace. If he goes 'on the cheap', it'll just make it far far worse.

I agree completely Ken, but I have to say I'm already inclined with us starting the season without Xabi. There's to much smoke without any fire regarding him telling Rafa about leaving.
We now Real have the cash, so it's just a matter of time and on how persisitent we'll be with the sum.

A cash + player transfer would be best IMO. With Robben or Sneijder + 20 mill a good bargain.
Then we could use whatever cash we have availeble to secure a replacement for Alonso.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I always say 'never keep a player who wants to leave', but the main reason I say that is because

a) they'll play shit as they'll sulk
b) they disrupt the dressing room

I can't see alonso doing either in world cup year.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't think we'll end up with a swap deal although they do have a couple players I'd like at Anfield.

In a straight cash deal, we shouldn't budge one inch on the price, no matter what Xabi wants to do.

Alves wanted to move a couple times, yet ended up staying. Essien had to go play with the youth team to force a move at Lyon and even then, Aulas still got a good fee from Chelsea. Benzema went for a fortune despite still being a youngster.

We, a much bigger club than the likes of Lyon and Sevilla, should not let Alonso go cheaply when there are very few alternatives around and players like D'Agostino are being rated at 20M. I'll be very disappointed if we do.

ronaldo was desparate to leave last season, look at the performance he put in season just gone.
vieria was constantly denied a move by arsenal and always played top drawer.
munich flat out refused a move for hargreaves the first time manu came calling.
we can dig in our heels if we want to, it's world cup year and alonso has three years in his contract, and we don't need the money.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

the fee has to be around 30-35m or there is no point because any replacement would cost either the same or more

Lucho Gonzales cost Marseille €26m from Porto. we should be demanding at least £30m+or keep him

they can have him for a lower fee next year

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The fact they paid so much for the unproven Benzema means we shouldnt budge in the slightest.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The real question though, is this thread longer than the Gareth Barry thread and just how long will it get?

"Unproven" is a touch harsh.

And younger players also have the benefit of re-sale value towards the end end of their first contract, meaning they shouldn't necessarily be cheaper.

I take your point, though - we should be reluctant to sell even at £35M.

Surprised Madrid aren't pursuing Fabregas with more tenacity. I know he's a Barca boy but he's an ideal alternative to Alonso. He's clearly after a move for silverware and I'd be amazed if he turned Madrid down.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Lucho Gonzalez went for 18 mill euros, and tbh, thats one player I wouldn't have minded us replaceing Xabi with.

El Commandante is an excellent footballer.

I just feel that they have paid nearly double what we paid for Torres, and that I feel is excessive for a player who isnt playing at the highest standard.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I hope we don´t sell him at all...can´t see who we could replace him with.

According to Jornal de Noticias, Joao Moutinho is high on Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini's list of targets to reinforce los Blancos’ midfield sector, which still needs two new faces, according to the Chilean tactician.

The 22-year-old midfielder, a product of Sporting's youth academy, has a €22.5 million buy-out clause attached to his contract, but reports in Portugal last week indicated that his agent, Pini Zahavi, had offered the youngster's services to several Premier League outfits for just €15m.

Moutinho has never hidden his desire to play abroad and claim a better contract, and his name now looks to be a possibility for Real after negotiations for Liverpool's Xabi Alonso reached an impasse.

He was close to leaving the Jose Alvalade for Everton last summer but the Toffees could not reach an agreement with the Portuguese club and the player remained at the Lisbon-based outfit.

Hmmm, Moutinho certainly doesnt look that bad at all..

You guys do now know the Echo are reporting Xabi's asked Rafa to let him go?

Unfortuately that'll have weakened our stance here.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

ALONSO has told Rafa Benitez he wants to quit Anfield and sign for Real Madrid – but Liverpool will not grant his wish unless the Spanish giants come up with a fee in the region of £35m.

Alonso has stopped short of putting in an official written transfer request but he has made it clear to Benitez that his future lies in La Liga rather than the Premier League.

The 27-year-old is due to join up with his Liverpool team mates on Sunday after being given extended leave following his involvement in the Confederations Cup in South Africa but Alonso and his agent Inaki Ibanez are hopeful that a deal can be thrashed out with Real before then.

But with Real reluctant to spend more than £27m for the Spanish international and Benitez adamant that he will not allow Alonso to leave for that kind of figure, a compromise is some way off.

Alonso could try to force the issue by handing in an official transfer request but the midfielder believes that he deserves to be able to have his future sorted out without taking such formal measures after giving five years of service to the Reds. Real’s public pursuit of Alonso is now becoming incessant with recently appointed manager Manuel Pellegrini becoming the latest leading Bernabeu official to speak of his club’s desire to snap up the Liverpool man.

Pellegrini said: “He’s an important player as he has shown with the Spanish team.

“It’s no mystery that Real Madrid are interested in his services, but it will not be easy.”

Benitez is fully aware that Alonso’s desire to leave Liverpool will make it increasingly difficult to hold on to the former Real Sociedad man despite the fact that he still has three years of his Anfield contract remaining.

But the Reds boss is adamant that he will not let Alonso go on the cheap, no matter how much pressure Real put Liverpool under.

Benitez knows there are precious few midfielders around of Alonso’s quality and he is likely to have to re-shape his side if the Spanish international leaves - and that would inevitably be an expensive process. So unless Real come up with the kind of money which would enable Benitez to go on a mini spending spree of his own, then the Liverpool manager will not budge.

I don't think it should.

Barry asked to leave Villa last year and was refused because we didn't meet the asking price.

Agreed. For our stance to be weaken, Xabi will have to go on strike or cause such a fuss that it's simply not worth it to keep him. I hope Xabi isn't prepared to go that far.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Looks like he is going according to the echo....

and Tom Huddlestone (so I hear) probably be on his way in...

could be a decent bit of business.. and probably an ideal replacement for Alonso...

He has a decent passing range and a powerful strike on him that has brought him a few long range goals from midfield for spurs

Good news: Parry no longer in charge of transfers. if he leaves, we get the correct fee or he stays!

I like Huddlestone passing ability but it isn't in Xabi's league. He couldn't be the replacement for Alonso. Wasn't their concerns over his fitness too. Did he play much for SPurs last season?

Tom Huddlestone ain't a bad player... In fact probably one of the most improved english players in the prem last season.

Redknapp has grown exasperated with him. He struggles with his weight and, in spite of being urged to be more competitive, he has drifted through games looking like a poorly Glen Hoddle. He looked really promising when he first came on the scene but he doesn't have the fight to make it at a higher level.

Not the same type of player as Xabi and not a like for like replacement, but I think he has some potential.
I don't know why , but Ray Kennedy keeps popping into my head when I see Huddlestone. He is certainly better than Lucas

So whats all this talk of Huddlestone? Any links? Hes a talented lad and can spray a ball about for fun but hes a gentle giant. He would soon be labelled a shithouse here.
