From the sounds of it, Chelsea are very occupied with Ribery.
Anyone worried United will step up and make a bid for them? Hope he fucks of to Barca or something.
I don't know how true it was, but there was an article from the Guardian saying Ribery was too old for United to spend heavily on, given there would be no re-sale value. Bearing that in mind, they must have been gutted and surprised to lose Benzema to Real so quickly.

Real want him next year, Chelsea are trying their luck, and Barca seem very quiet.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Just heard that interview. Doesn't sound great... Don't like having to guilt people to keep them

Can't we just offer them more money? That usually seems to work.
we shouldn't have to. we heroically saved mascherano from a career of championship football.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Hmm, De Rossi is an excellent footballer. Wouldn't mind him if we sold Alonso tbh.

Either way, Rafa said Alonso and Mascherano are under contract and that we want to keep our best players.

So, either Real or Barca pay to dollar or they stay..

Balague: ‘Alonso has asked Rafa to release him’

Respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has revealed Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has told Rafa Benitez to allow him to move to Real Madrid.

The Spanish journalist who is a regular expert on Sky Sports’ ‘Revista de la Liga’ suggests at the moment the deal is in danger of falling through because of Liverpool’s lofty valuation of the former Real Sociedad star, yet Balague intimates it might be better for all concerned to let the 27-year-old leave Anfield.

Writing on his official website, Balague said: “It is true that Real Madrid are getting a little impatient with the situation (Alonso transfer saga) and they would like to find a solution as soon as possible – not only with Xabi Alonso but they would like all of their transfer activity complete before pre-season in around two weeks time.â€

“Rafa Benitez has been publicly sending out the message that he does not want Xabi Alonso to leave – but I cannot help wondering if, in these circumstances, it is entirely fair to do so when Xabi appears determined to move on.â€

Balague also suggested the relationship between Alonso and Benitez is nearing a breaking point.

The esteemed journalist continued: “Their relationship may have reached breaking point: Rafa decided to sell him last summer and the player accepted the situation. However, when there were no concrete offers that matched Rafa`s valuation, Xabi was told he would be staying. Xabi was previously asked to sign a new deal and he did so.â€

“The player now feels it is time to move on and he has asked Rafa to release him so that he can pursue fresh challenges.â€

“Under entirely normal circumstances, when there are healthy relationships between player, manager, agent etc – everything would be fairly straightforward and concluded with the minimum of fuss.â€

“However, it appears that nobody is willing to make compromises or make concessions and the situation seems to be in stalemate.â€

If a deal is not concluded between Real Madrid and Liverpool, Balague intimates it would not be beneficial for the player or indeed Liverpool.

Balague added: “The danger is that Real Madrid will run out of patience and focus their attention on other targets (the Spanish newspaper Marca is reporting that De Rossi of Roma is already being lined up as an alternative).â€

“If that were to happen, and Xabi ends up staying at Liverpool – I have to ask how healthy that would be for the relationship between manager and player at Anfield, and how motivated will Xabi be next season?â€

“This could also lead to another potential problem for Benitez: if a price tag has been placed on Alonso, a player who has asked to leave – what happens if a Premier League rival puts that money on the table after Madrid have withdrawn their interest?â€

“Would it have been better to have sold to Spain, rather than to a Premier League rival?â€

“Perhaps a bid may come in from one of the big Italian clubs, but if not, the situation becomes inreasingly more complicated and I fear it may not end to everyone’s satisfactionâ€

Rafa wants loyalty from duo
Reds boss confident of keeping Alonso & Mascherano

Rafa Benitez believes Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano owe it to Liverpool to stay at the club.

Midfield duo Alonso and Mascherano have both been strongly linked with moves away from Anfield to Spain this summer.

Real Madrid have openly declared their interest in Spanish ace Alonso, while Barcelona are keeping tabs on Mascherano.

Benitez is confident the key duo will remain on Merseyside and he has revealed he would like the pair to show some loyalty to Liverpool.

"I do not think Alonso or Mascherano will go. It is clear that they both are under contract with long-term agreements. That is it," insisted Benitez.

"There has been a lot of things written, a lot of rumours, but both players are under contract and we have no more need to talk about things.

"They are both very good players and I will be very pleased to keep them. They both have very good contracts.

"We signed them both from different situations. Alonso was coming from Real Sociedad and nobody had really heard much of him outside of Spain, he did well and we renewed his contract because of that.

"Mascherano came from West Ham where he had not been doing well. We brought him here and gave him a good contract, so we are very pleased with them both and that Liverpool has been very good to them."

Who cares about their relationship?

It's been said a million times now, this is a world cup season, being on top form is essential if you want to get games at the world cup.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if he wants to go, then they should pay us the fee ... if not, he can shut the fuck up and play for his world cup spot - unless of course he'd rather watch it on the tele ...

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

In the last year and a half Balague has really fallen from reliable spanish insider to annoying make up rubbish about everything journalist.

I hope like most of his recent articles, this is rubbish.

I'm afraid GB probably knows his shit here. I'd say Alonso has expressed a desire to move on.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Right. Well somebody needs to remind Xabi that he is contracted for 3 years. He is our player and unless RM or anyoneelse matches our valuation, he remains our player.

I have visions of this being a bit like Judas Owen. Dragging on till its too late for us to find a suitable replacement

So what if Real want their transfers sorted before pre-season. So do we. They should pay the price now so that we can find a rplacement in time. If they try dragging it to push the price down there should be no deal.

It's not that simple IMO. The more that relationship deteriorates, the harder it will be for the player to perform at his best even if he wants to. Xabi has just had an excellent season, but it may be more than he can manage for him to swallow his disenchantment with Rafa and play like that for two seasons in a row.

Didn't Xabi go out with Kelly Dalglish at one stage? Perhaps the King can bang Xabi's and Rafa's heads together.

Agreed. Everyone's been been saying Xabi's silence is deafening, and I suspect he's now broken that silence with Benitez.

If he didn't want to leave, he would have said so by now - that much is clear.

The balls in now in Benitez's court - he either chooses to keep a top quality central midfielder who's perfect for our game, at the expense of his happiness and contentment, or risk shipping him out and finding a replacement who can come in and perform immediately to a high standard.

Now we've missed on on Barry, I think we should hold onto him and have a proper shot at the title. If nothing has improved, we can sell him next year. Xabi won't be happy with that, of course; a move to Real Madrid doesn't happy every day of the week, but it's the best course of action as far as Liverpool are concerned.

Xabi's a professional character, and is paid a high sum for his services. He'll just have to get on with it.

Agreed. We should hold on to Xabi wether he likes it or not, and in the meanwhile look out for a REAL replacement should he really leave next season.

I really don't think he'd wanna flop in our team if he stays next season for two reasons:

a. It's a WC season.
b. He has to keep an excellent level to earn a decent move.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Rafa's simply doing the obvious thing here.

Xabi will have to be at his best next season cos it's WC year 2010, & it doesnt disrupt our MF if he stays, he also doesnt want the fans to think it's his fault, & if Xabi does go then he wants the best fee possible.

By saying so adamantly he wants to keep him then he's doing all of the above. I doubt Rafa does want rid considering how he played last season, but nevertheless this all deflects attention way from the fact Rafa is the reason Alonso wants to go.

I dont blame Rafa, Alonso hadnt performed to the levels he can for two seasons. Both Real, & Alonso, need to put up or shut up, Alonso stating he wants to go or Real meeting the valuation, or at least trying to come close.

If Xabi has asked to go, fair enough, but we as a club don't owe him any favours in terms of not pricing him out of a move. Real can seemingly pay whatever is necessary to secure certain players... if they're not willing to do so with him, then they obviously don't want him enough and that's theirs and his problem... not ours.

First time we have spoken on the matter for a while (as opposed to Valdano's daily updates) and we seem to be comfortable, as we should. For a change we are in a strong position and we should ensure we retain control.

Real are acting a if we're victimising Xabi or being unreasonable.

They didn't seem too upset when negotiating the other transfers.

I don't find it galling, Avvy, for the simple reason that I don't take it at all seriously. It's a tactic, and a pretty transparent one. Bluntly, who gives a flying focaccia what they say or do? We've got the whip hand here, and fortunately we now seem to have people in place with the cojones to use it.
