The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I really despair. Okay. If you're going to just stare at the screen thinking 'Barry-Xabi-Xabi-Barry' you'll find some spooky connections, but if you stand back, take some deep breaths and THINK you'll just see generalities. Have you never known any transfers before?? See you in September, worse luck!

You were the one who identified the Xabi-Barry comparison.

Or is this classic gkmacca hahaha.............................

I'm too busy this month to bother about this, but this thread, full as it is with the mood-shifting contrariness that comes from (a) wanting to fetishise pessimism to inure oneself to anticipated pain or (b) wanting to fetishise optimism to ward off thoughts of said pain, was bad enough as an unsolicited display of a disturbingly humour-free person's therapy, but the recent addition of sanctimonious, almost Biblical, 'we're all to blame' wailings is too much.

This is what Benitez said about Barry. I know it's part of the above mindset to regard the manager of this club as not only more stupid than they are but also little more than a brazen liar, but, for those whose feet are still in touching distance of planet Earth:

I want to make things clear over what has happened between us and Aston Villa.
‘I talked to Martin O’Neill about Barry in April but have not spoken to anyone at Aston Villa since. In the intervening months, all the talks have been between Rick Parry and Aston Villa’s owner and chief executive. The talks have been pretty good, but they are the ones involved, not me. I was not conducting any talks with Villa about Gareth Barry or with Arsenal about Xabi Alonso. If you want to know about negotiations over players, you must contact Rick Parry.
Your Barry point is void as the player wanted to leave, as far as we know Xabi is happy, when a player wants to leave of course the buying club are going to act in this way.
Macca's point isn't "void" in the slightest, because we don't "know" anything of the kind yet.
Barry came out and declared interest and was then courted by us, from the offset he said he wanted to leave, Xabi has said in an interview he is happy here, so until Xabi comes out and says he wants to join Madrid the point is void.
There is a point in what you say Peatcheo, but Barry never would submit a written transfer request , Villa said if he did that he could go.
The other point is that until we came sniffing around there was never , as far as is documented any thought of Barry leaving.
The only difference is Alonso has remained largely silent, and it is that silence that is deafening
To be fair George during the Barry ordeal there was confusion over who was right and wrong considering that Rafa claimed that O'Neill leaked our interest before we did.
I may be mistaken but I actually thought that Barry did hand in his transfer request and we could not or would not meet Villa's valuation.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I think you're wrong. He never handed a transfer request.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Strange if he did not hand in his transfer request, why was he stripped off his captaincy and given such a hard time by the Villa fans?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Because he was saying he wanted to leave Villa for Liverpool (or for CL football).
If he handed in a transfer request he would have lost a £3m loyalty bonus. That was the main thing that was sticking in Villas craw at the end, had he waived that, and or put in a written request he would almost certainly have been a Liverpool player now. I can completely understand Villas sstance.

So had that happened, I doubt if this thread would exist and Xabi would have been sold, by now anyway, if not last summer , then in January.

So a little extra greed from a player has worked for us it seems

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I think he had a chat with O'Neil where he told him of his desire to move. It qwas at that point O'Neil stripped him of the Captaincy and said he could go if the price was met.

Whether Barry scribbled it down on a piece of paper ro whether it can be describwed as an oficial request, I don't know.

Or care.. for that matter.

Even if Alonso wants to go we are absolutely right to screw every last penny out of Real Madrid and since he's got 3 years left on his contract, we are in a position to do it.

We don't need or want to sell him and we shouldn't unless we are made an offer we simply can't refuse.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The Echo are saying Real have now turned their sites on De Rossi, which probably signals the end of the interest in Xabi.

It's gone very quiet on the Mascher thing, and has Tevez fallen off the edge of the planet?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Maybe Masher and Benitez are trying to talk him round.

I'm not 100% convinced City have bagged him.

Rossi would cost them much more than Xabi.

Very quiet on the Tevez front, I've read that they're still bidding for other strikers? I wonder if it's off and he's going to Chelski?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If we keep alonso' masher, and add Silva we're in with an almighty chance of winning the league.

That's for damn sure.

Not necessarily as Roma are repotedly a mess financially.

Also if we are asking something like £35m for Xabi how much more do you think De Rossi would cost?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

LIVERPOOL’S hopes of holding on to Xabi Alonso have been raised after Real Madrid made a move for Italian international midfielder Daniele De Rossi.

The Spanish giants have become increasingly frustrated in their ongoing bid to make Alonso their latest big money acquisition as Liverpool’s resolve to hold on to their midfield playmaker has not weakened.

Rafa Benitez has repeatedly made it clear that the 27-year-old is not for sale despite Real’s remorseless public campaign – and the Reds boss is yet to show any sign he is ready to change stance.

Sources in Spain today indicated that Real are “fed up†with Benitez’s refusal to bow to the demands of his former club by caving in and allowing Alonso to leave Anfield.

In the face of such resistance Real are now examining their options and are ready to test the water to see if AS Roma’s desire to hold on to De Rossi is as strong as Liverpool’s determination to retain Alonso’s services.

Newly installed Real president Fiorentino Perez has already snared Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol in a spending spree which has made world football sit up and take notice of the outlandish goings on at the Bernabeu but he is finding Liverpool a much tougher nut to crack than the other top clubs he has raided.

The growing feeling at Anfield is that unless Real make an incredible offer for Alonso that would allow them to go on a spree of their own, the Reds would be better off keeping hold of the Spanish international even if doing so reduces their own ability to make a massive splash in the transfer market.

Real sporting director Jorge Valdano has again spoken about the issue, admitting that a move for Alonso is now “further away†than ever – a revelation which will be music to the ears of the former Real Sociedad man’s legion of Anfield fans.

I agree, never been massively impressed by De Rossi, well not to the standard that he apparantly is. Certainly nowhere near Alonso!

They're just very different types of players, surely? Alonso's a deep-lying playmaker; De Rossi's a box-to-box CM. Seems an odd choice of alternative from Real's point of view. Plus they really need to buy some Spaniards. I don't think we've heard the last of this, sadly.

i didn't enjoy that interview with rafa. it sounded as though he was trying to guilt trip the pair of them into staying as we've been 'so good to them'. he also didn't sound as though he was expecting to sign anyone of note.
