The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Good on us if that's the case.

Fuck you Madrid; You want him, you pay over the odds for him.
Yup, great article that.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Haha, isn't it funny how Madrid's first option (Arbeloa) is valued cheaper than their 'back-up' (Clichy).
I dont know why they would think we'd take 3m for the current Spanish left back. As has been said keep him and let him go free to spite them next year. Winning the league this year is infinately more valuable than 3m fucking quid.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

its about time we told them to pay up or fuck off, 4 million euros for arbeloa, just what planet are they on?

Hmmm.. The last part of the article is a bit concerning though.

Latest quote from Valdano on Cadena Sur along the lines of Madrid is moving away from the idea of signing Alonso for the time being.

If this is the case it's probably a ploy for us to lower the price. If Alonso is so intent on going and he forces the issue (or hands in a TR) then we're likely to negotiate further and lower our asking price.

Still, it's a good start as an asking price.

I don't know. Barry did more or less all he could bar hand in a transfer request to leave Villa and they stood firm.

Why shouldn't we?

If Alonso desperately wants to go, we'll sell if our valuation is met. If not, he can stay here and continue to play well. It won't be in his interests to sulk - not in a World Cup year and not if he wants a move the next summer.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

According to AS, Real wants the deal done before 19th of july.
They seem to think the player prefers a move to Spain, although Xabi hasn't said that in public yet.

We want 40 mill for him, and accoring to AS we're considering Cambiasso as one of the players that can replace him.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The link to Cambiasso was in Tuttosport or whatever it's called in Italy the other day.

Apparently he's in the last year of his contract, so should be relatively cheap.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

why the fuck should we roll over for real (like we usually do) in this instance unlike owen alonso doesn't have mere months on his contract.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Totally agree with the comments above, if we're selling either Alonso or Mascherano we should be getting as much money as possible out of Madrid.

I just want it resolved ASAP either way. If they're going we need to get on with finding replacements.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I like the sound of this Purslow bloke - finally someone who can play hardball in negotiations. We are in a very good position (with both players having three years on their contracts) and should not waver at all.

Re Cambiasso, I mentioned him as a possible Xabi replacement in another thread and everyone said he was too defensive. That's possibly true, but his distribution (though less spectacular than Xabi's) is very good. And he's presumably played alongside Mascher for the Argentine national team, hasn't he?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

it fucks me off that the general attitude for when real/barca come calling teams have to roll over for them.
loads of people were saying MON was a twat for his attitude with barry but I admired him for it, why the fuck should he roll over when a team wants to take his best player, especially if he doesn't need to sell.
fuck off real and fuck off barca!

I didnt see you write that. I would have been right there with you. Cambiasso is a very tidy player. He isnt going to ping 50 yard balls but he and Mascherano would be perfect foils for each other, and yes thay are at the heart of Argentina so they have bags of understanding you would guess. Cheap, very good, bald. Signimup!!!!!

1.De Rossi
2.Aquilani
3.Cambiasso
4.The rest.....

actually 1. should be Xabi.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The only problem with Cambiasso is we would've no midfield after every international break with him, Lucas and Masch all away.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Has Cambiasso been injured recently? He's not been in the Argentina team the last few times I've seen them.

It's not that straight forward though. This is a higher profile move with alot more money involved and potentially at stake. If rumours are true, both players are unsettled and allowing Alonso's contract to run down for another year while he clearly still wants to go, could have significant financial implications for us, especially with the fees being talked about.

Villa essentially gambled on gaining CL football and in the end only lost out on a couple of million for keeping Barry on the extra year. Would the same be true of Alonso? I doubt we'd be getting in the region of £25m-£40m this time next year when he'll be 29 and his contract will be alot lower. He could end up having a poor season and that could have further repercussions on the transfer fee.

I don't want to see us become a selling club, if we sell Alonso but hold on to Masher then no one can really level that at us, and if we are, what does that make United? Players come and players go, he's been here 5yrs and despite me first of all wanting to keep hold of Alonso, if he wants to go and his heart is clearly set on a move to Madrid, then what's benefit is there for us longterm? We'd have an unhappy player on our hands who's transfer fee would be dwindling month by month.

We should all be pulling in the same direction as a club and if some people aren't then unfortunately for the good of the club and our longterm ambitions they should just go.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

On Cambiasso's best day, he'll never be Alonso. However, I guess if the two DM's keep it simple and simply bring the front men into play, then he could do a job.

He is limited in what he can do with the ball though.

Surprise surprise, Rafa in better negotiating skills than Parry. 😉
As evidenced by Gareth Barry wearing light blue next season ?
Yes. Either Rafa wasn't that keen this season or he wasn't prepared to meet Barry's wage demands. I'm not fussed by it and I don't Rafa was either. His priorities had changed and I am not even sure how keen he was to sign him as I saw nothing but media speculation over our desire to sign him this summer. He certainly wasn't first priority.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Perez's obsession with thinking he can ignore our asking price and fob us off with unwanted players is really tiresome. Does he do it with any other club? He says he wants the Alonso situation sorted out as soon as possible. Okay: 'He's not for sale'. How long did that take, you twit?

RAFA: I wish to register a complaint.
PEREZ: Oh, yes? What seems to be the problem.
RAFA: When I sold Owen to you some time ago you gave me this fine creature in return.
PEREZ: Ah yes, the Antonio Nunez! Beautiful thing, eh? Lovely!
RAFA: It was rubbish.
PEREZ: What?? Are you joking?? The Nunez was much-coveted all over Europe!
RAFA: No. The Nunez was rotting in your reserves.
PEREZ: How DARE you!
RAFA: Anyway, what are you trying to offload this time?
PEREZ: I can barely bring myself to part with this absolute gem. Really. My heart is breaking...
RAFA: Get on with it.
PEREZ: I have out the back...some money...a box of chocolates...and...Alvaro Negredo!!
RAFA: Good bye.
PEREZ: No, wait! What about no money...TWO boxes of chocolates...
RAFA: Feck off!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It's all very well us getting upset with Madrid, but this is no different to what we done to Villa last summer.

That Karma lark, eh?

Lets hope Madrid feel that Karma then.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

We are in total control here and Purslow playing hard ball is brilliant, both players have quite a long contract remaining, we dont need the money and as far as we know neither player wants to leave. Real mustnt be used to this.

Purslow is doing what he is told to do by Rafa. I think they both would prefer to go but they have 3 years left on their contracts and in Mashers case he owes Rafa. Rafa is dealing from a position of strength due to their contract length and the fact it is a World cup year. We can sell for top, top dollar or keep them and go for the title knowing they will probably go next year for less.

IMO we will go half way and allow one of them to go.

'What we done'?? Who are you, Arthur Mullard? ;D

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The problem with Cambiasso is that he's another player who might potentially become homesick and want to leave at an inconvenient time.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If we were to lose either Alonso or Mascherano (not both) for £40m + would people feel that Michael Essien would be a good replacement?

Its rumoured he's not happy at Chelsea and frankly Barca and Real can't buy all of the World Class CM's...can they?

I think Essien would add something but the only thing is I'm not sure how old he is. Any takers?

You could say that about any foreigner. And Cambiasso's been playing in Europe for years.

He's probably the best CM in the world, so obviously, yeah, it'd be great. Not going to happen though.
