The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Nor could we splash £18m on Glen Johnson, or waste £20m on Robbie Keane any one player before.

There, I corrected that for you.

I don't think these are good examples for our owners.

The mentality of our yanks should be similar to those of the scum.

They go by the mentality "Our debts already dawrf the amounts spent on any player hence what is 10-20 million more of debt?" They do not look at the debt itself but rather the interest they have to service.

I wouldn't share that view Molbys.

They have done some good. Our manager and top players are all tied into long term lucrative deals.
They have given the manager (rate him or not) complete power over the football side of the club and have backed him in the transfer market.
They have broken the clubs transfer record.

I'm not their biggest fan myself, and they have had some glaring fuck ups, no question.
But in an unprecedended global downturn they have both seen their individual wealth cut considerably.

You were never on my christmas card list cochyn.

The owners we have are shysters of the first order. If our net spend has increased recently it will most probably be something to do with the fucking enormous increase in tV revenue and being one of the most succesful teams in europe over the last 5 years. Hear my fart.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Graham Hunter on SSN reckons that Real has told Xabi that he must push for a move from Liverpool.
He also said that he believes there is a timeframe on the deal and if it doesn't go ahead in the next two weeks then Real will move on to the target next in line, De rossi I think he said (the one Oncy raves about).

From what people have said on here before I believe that Hunter is a fairly credible source of information.

No player is bigger than the club, but if Xabi really wants out, he should tell Real to stump up silly money! The fans don't deserve a backlashing (of losing an idol) as result of the tiff between him and Rafa.

Surely it's much worse when a player is doing his utmost to engineer a move but doesn't hand in an official transfer request because that would mean losing out on his loyalty bonus.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I think thats great news, couple with Xabi saying he wants everything sorted by July 19th, I just cant see Xabi being the sort to force his way out and on a 3 year contract we dont have to let him, either a ridiculous amount of money or we keep Xabi, I think he'll be lining up with the redmen first day of the new season

You know I am beginning to see this as a bit of a win/win situation for us.
If Xabi is to leave (and I hope he doesn't) I think it will be only for top dollar with which Rafa will hopefully be able to get a relatively suitable replacement and have a good bit of change left over.
Or alternatively even better again....... Xabi stays.

Every club in the league has experienced the same rise in tv revenues over the last 2/3 years molby. From Wigan to Fulham, all the clubs get the same amount of cash. So i do not see that as a reason for hating the americans. We have been one of the most successful teams in Europe over the last few years due to our manager and the board have recognised that by sacking other members of the board and giving him control.

When Houllier was in charge we picked up players for a pittence when United were out buying Veron (28mil), van Nistlerooy (18mil), Ferdinand (30mil) (I'm aware that bringing up United's purchases may lead to a conversation about net spend and all that, this is not why I am bringing it up). We had Heskey in our team who cost 11mil and I can't think of anyone else in the team that cost a considerable amount of money at that time. Now we have Mascherano (18mil), Torres (24mil), Keane (20mil) Johnson (17mil). That is something we never had before.

I am not saying anything other than this, the Amercian owners have not been ALL bad.

I think one of Marca or AS said that Valdano wants Xabi to create a fuss in Liverpool. The same way Ribery is doing at Bayern. It will be interesting to see if Xabi goes to that level. My instinct says no.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Translation of AS article courtesy of Rossi on RAWK

"As if the negotiations with Bayern over the sale of Ribery weren't proving difficult enough, along comes Liverpool to take the biscuit/piss/prize/beyond the pale etc. regarding the transfer of Xabi Alonso.

Christian Purslow, the new Executive Director, has already set the asking price for the player to £40m (almost exactly €47m).

The Reds last week invited Madrid to begin negotiations over the signing of Alonso. After some time to reflect, both Benitez and Purslow agreed that they should try and extract the maximum amount of money possible out of Real Madrid, who have already spent €211 million on Kaká, Ronaldo, Albiol and Benzema.

Purslow (who comes from the financial sector, run by corporate lines and he does not have any experience in football) has fixed this price with the approval of Benítez, with whom he communicates in Spanish.

The Madrilenian Benitez, who last season put the player up for sale for only €20m, is the chief person in charge of the club's operations and knows that both Xabi Alonso and Mascherano are wanted elsewhere, but will only authorise the exit of one of them.

On top of that, this is where Purslow the financier enters the game. To Mascherano, 25 years old he values at €50 million and Xabi Alonso, who will turn 28 in November, €47 million. The offer of €35 million made last week for Xabi and Arbeloa by Madrid is therefore seen as insufficient by him.

The intention of Purslow is to negotiate the transfer of Alvaro Arbeloa independently from that of Xabi Alonso. Manuel Garci'a Quilón, his agent, has already agreed to personal terms with Real Madrid for his player last Monday. The agreement would be for a five-year contract. Liverpool have requested €9 million, but Real Madrid will not pay more than €4 million.

Valdano, meanwhile, is still keeping alternative options open such as Clichy (valued at €17 million) which he would pursue if the signing of Arbeloa proves complicated."

Latest quote from Valdano on Cadena Sur along the lines of Madrid is moving away from the idea of signing Alonso for the time being.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Good on us if that's the case.

Fuck you Madrid; You want him, you pay over the odds for him.
