The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I think only a tribal elder actually knows how old he is. He would be a good addition but I can't see it happening. Incidentally, Houllier tried to get him before he hit the big time.

It's all very well us getting upset with Madrid, but this is no different to what we done to Villa last summer.

That Karma lark, eh?

'What we done'?? Who are you, Arthur Mullard? ;D

More like Tony Soprano.

If we were to lose either Alonso or Mascherano (not both) for £40m + would people feel that Michael Essien would be a good replacement?

Its rumoured he's not happy at Chelsea and frankly Barca and Real can't buy all of the World Class CM's...can they?

I think Essien would add something but the only thing is I'm not sure how old he is. Any takers?
[/quote]

If Essien was a possible replacement he would top my list to replace either of them against what is realistically available. Even in a 'take a pick' scenario he would either be top or very close. He is not available though, not to us that is for sure, hence why it is never discussed.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

We should put a bid in for Essien and J. Cole..
80 million should do it

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

As much as I'd love it to happen, Essien will never be a Liverpool player.

We'll be after someone with a lesser profile.

Nah, £50 tops. £40m for Essien and £10 for Cole.

If the opportunity arose we should be all over him - however we wouldn't be alone and others have deeper pockets. Sure Chelsea would want him to move abroad though.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Gerrard is better than him firstly.

And Chelsea would never sell him to us of all clubs.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I like Purslow's stance and it's good to hear something so reassuring.

Tell them we can swap Arbeloa for Torres, Raul and Van Nostrilhair.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

There's not a lot of players you can sign that will even come close to Alonsos quality. But some possible targets may be;

Palombo
De Rossi
Hamsik
Cambiasso
Yaya Toure
Moutinho
Martinez
Miguel Veloso
Toulalan
Aquilani
Defour
Ramires
Melo

Out of those players, only De Rossi, Palombo, Cambiasso and Toure would be good enough as a direct replacement imho. Maybe Hamsik aswell.

The rest have potential, but would be a much bigger risk.
If we're allowing him to leave, we better have someone lined up. Agreed price and everything. If not, we'll shoot ourselves in the foot, big time.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if real refuse to pay the money, after all their extravagance, then xabi should take some offence, which will work for us.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Real put off by Alonso price

Real Madrid remain interested in Xabi Alonso but are not prepared to meet Liverpool's valuation of the talented midfielder.

Santiago Bernabeu director general Jorge Valdano sees the Spain international as a unique talent, but admitted they may be forced to consider alternatives.

Real have launched an astonishing summer spending spree, bringing Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol to the club in a second wave of 'galactico' signings.

Returning president Florentino Perez is the man behind the enormous investment, with further new faces expected to arrive over the summer.

And while Valdano admits Alonso remains one of their targets, Madrid want the price to be right, despite Liverpool insisting that the midfielder is not for sale.

"Xabi Alonso is a priority if he fits into our budget, and this doesn't seem the case. We are very far from the figures that Liverpool have set out," Valdano was quoted as telling Spanish radio station Onda Madrid.

Private details
Valdano added on Cadena Ser: "Liverpool have taken up a difficult stance over Xabi Alonso. I don't like to talk about the private details of negotiations.

"We are studying many alternatives. We want someone who can channel the play and there aren't many like that in the world."

With plenty of time before the transfer window closes and with several key signings already wrapped up, Valdano insists the Spanish giants have no great urgency to complete their summer shopping.

"After the great players who have arrived, we aren't in a hurry," he said.

"(We want) two signings, maximum three. That's the number with which the team will be able to cover all eventualities.

"With the arrival of Benzema, we are not going to sign (Valencia striker David) Villa. We are happy to have got the Frenchman. He is 21, powerful, and is enthusiastic and eager."

Ramires who plays for Brazil? I don't think he's even a CM.

All part of the bargaining process.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Sorry Perez,

We offered you the player, told you the price either pay it or find somebody else.

If Alonso doesn't like it, tough, he bounced back from a bad summer last year. He'll need to do it again this year if he wants to stay in the Spain first eleven.

We will delay until the clause runs out and then accept a bid above what we would of got. Good business.

This is really is the Barry Saga all over again; with us on the other end.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

That's what I'm hoping for B-Man.

Y1,

I accept that if he wants to leave and the right offer comes in there's nothing else left to do.

I will be gutted though.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

True, if Xabi wanna leave, nothing much to do except to extort a kingly ransom. Squeeze every drop of blood from Real. Yeah.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Great, great news.

The club have handled it perfectly so far.
